We want to wish everyone a Happy Juneteenth!
Juneteenth, which was just recently designated a federal holiday in 2021 and has been recognized within Black and African-American communities for much longer than that.
For many Americans there is still much to learn about Juneteenth, mostly because it still hasn't been promoted on a large scale and is not really taught much in the public schools.
For those of you who are still unfamiliar, Juneteenth is also referred to as Freedom Day, which commemorates the total abolition of slavery in the U.S. that took place on June 19, 1865. Hence the name Juneteenth.
Just a brief history:
Although the Emancipation Proclamation was announced 3 years earlier, many enslaved people were still unaware of their legal freedom. Especially those located in the Southern regions, particularly in Texas. In fact, many slave owners relocated to Texas because it was viewed as a “safe haven” to continue as usual.
It took federal troops 2.5 years to arrive in Texas and take control of the state to ensure all the enslaved people were actually freed. At that point this famous proclamation was issued:
“The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor. The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages. They are informed that they will not be allowed to collect at military posts and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere.”
Back in that day celebrating Juneteenth was met with opposition, but it has stood the test of time, thanks to those who risked all to continue to celebrate this incredible day of freedom.
We encourage everyone to learn more about this wonderful holiday and what it means to all of us!

Symptoms can include flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety, and avoidance of triggers. It's important to know that PTSD is not a sign of weakness and seeking help is a sign of strength. If you or someone you know is struggling with PTSD, there are resources available such as therapy, support groups, and medication. Let's spread awareness and support those who are affected by PTSD.
Help is available, all you have to do is ask.
If you are dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder there are very good treatments available.
