Are they (angels) not all ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation? Hebrews 1:14

But we see him who for little while was made lower than the angels, namely, Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. Hebrews 2:9

We are thrilled when we think of the angel sent forth to minister for those who shall be heirs of salvation: that those wondrous creatures, which so far excel us in wisdom and strength, should have been appointed to be our attendants; that those holy creatures would be commissioned to encamp round about a poor sinner; that the courtiers of Heaven should wait upon worms of the earth! Truly, that is a great wonder. But O my brethren, that wonder pales into utter insignificance and, in comparison, fades away into nothingness, before this far greater wonder - that the Creator of angels should leave His throne on high and descend to this sin-cursed earth; that the very One before whom all the angels bow should, for a season, be made lower than they; that the Lord of glory, who had dwelt in “light unapproachable,” should Himself become partaker of “flesh and blood.” This is the wonder of wonders.

So wonderful was that unparalleled event of the Divine incarnation that the heavenly hosts descended to proclaim the Savior newly-born. So wonderful was it that the “glory of the Lord,” the ineffable Shekinah, which once filled the temple , but had long since retired from the earth, appeared again, for “the glory of the Lord shone round about” the awe-struck shepherds on Bethlehem’s plains. So wonderful was it that chronology was revolutionized, and instead of anon mundi became anon domino: the calendar was changed, and instead of its dating from the beginning of the world, it was re-dated from the birth of Christ; thus the Lord of time has written His very signature across the centuries

Why Our Messiah Became God Incarnate
Hebrews 2:14-15
December 10, 2023

What is Thanatophobia?

How is it treated?

Death, and the fear of death, cannot be avoided or defeated. Or, can it?

Why Did God Become Man?

Our Messiah did it ‘for the children’s sake.’

God was made flesh.

He can be touched by the feelings of our infirmities.

Cancer baldness.

Some identify with others to comfort them.

The Son of God took on flesh to comfort us - to deliver us.

In the face of death, and sin, we all need comfort, always.

The suffering servant is the sovereign Lord. Philippians 2:4-11

The Purpose of Our Messiah Taking on Flesh

To disarm the devil. (Ephesians 2:1-2)

Our Messiah is just and the justifier of all who believe in Jesus.

1 John 3:8 The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.

What a gift!

Our Messiah freed those who were the slaves of sin.

Our Messiah freed those suffering under the fear of death.

We can all do the math. I sin, sin must be punished. The wages of sin is death.

Colossians 2:13-15; 1 Corinthians 15:54.

“Good Christian men rejoice, with heart and soul and voice; now ye need not fear the grave: Jesus Christ was born to save!”

Freedom from Sin and Shame, the New Life

We are set free to live! To love!

2 Timothy 1:10, “our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,”

That is the gift of Christmas.

Call to Worship: Isaiah 25:9 (Responsively)

Behold, this is our God; we have waited for Him, that He might save us.

This is the Lord; we have waited for Him;

All: Let us be glad and rejoice in His salvation.

Salutation: 1 Timothy 1:2

Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

Invocation: from Scotty Smith

Dear Lord Jesus, Your manger was a veritable garden of grace, for there the Father planted You as the “tender shoot”—the “root out of dry ground,” of Isaiah’s vision. Hallelujah, You are root of life that has broken through the parched ground of our fallen world and sinful hearts.

We bow in awe at the sacrifice and humility of Your incarnation. You created beauty, yet You became the one with “no beauty,” for us. You took the vileness and ugliness of our sin, that we might become pure and beautiful by You. O holy merciful mystery—though You have always enjoyed the delight of the Godhead, You became the despised one—rejected for us that we might find acceptance in You. What wondrous love is this, indeed?

You—the fountain of pleasures, whose laughter fills heaven and whose joy is our strength; You became the man of suffering and sorrows for us. And though You didn’t remain a “tender shoot,” You have retained all tenderness. In taking up Your cross, You took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows; You bore our guilt and exhausted our judgment, once and for all. What a wonderful, merciful, tender Savior You are.

Come to us now, so that we may esteem and love You, as You deserve to be adored and worshipped, Lord Jesus. May Your tenderness grow exponentially in our hearts—for Your glory and the benefit of others. So very Amen we pray, in Your beautiful and grace-full name.

Hymn of Worship # 208: O Come, All Ye Faithful

Confession of Faith: from Joel Beeke

The miracle of the Incarnation is that God grafted the finite into the infinite. Thus, the Infinite One became bone of our bone, flesh of our flesh. The Prince of glory became the Babe in a manger. The Son of God became the Son of Man. The Creator came out of the creature. He who made the world and was above the world came into the world. The Almighty One became a little Child. The immortal Son was clothed in rags of mortality. The Eternal One became a Child of time. God, who made man after His image, was Himself made in man’s image. He whose dwelling is in the heavens was let down into the hell of this earth. He who thunders in the heavens cried in the manger. The invisible God was made visible. God took our flesh and dwelt in it with His divine fullness so that our flesh could become more glorious than the angels — and through that flesh God opened up His gospel treasures by being Savior, Redeemer, Kinsman, Elder Brother, and Shepherd of His own. In short, the Son of God became the Son of Man so that the sons of men might become the sons of God. How unsearchable are His ways!

Hymn # 200: It Came upon the Midnight Clear (Stanzas 1, 4)

Confession of Sin: Galatians 5:19-21

Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, or**es, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Fullness Of Grace - Westminster Choir

From Westminster Worship Service 12/3/23
Connected Service: https://youtube.com/live/8rG-GFBMUyo

Fullness of grace in man’s human frailty, this is the wonder of Jesus. Laying aside His
power and glory, humbly He entered our world. He chose the path of meanest worth,
scandal of a virgin birth. Born in a stable, cold and rejected, here lies the Hope of the
world.
Fullness of grace, the love of the Father shown in the face of Jesus; stooping to bear the
weight of humanity, walking the Calvary road. Christ, the holy innocent, took our sin and
punishment. Fullness of God, despised and rejected, crushed for the sins of the world.
Fullness of hope in Christ we had longed for; promise of God in Jesus. Through His
obedience we are forgiven, opening the floodgates of heaven. All of our hope and dreams
we bring gladly as an offering. Fullness of life and joy unspeakable, God’s gift in love to
the world. God’s gift in love to the world

Why Messiah Came
Romans 3:25-26
December 3, 2023

What is the Christmas Spirit?

One reason that Jesus came, was to heal his family.

God’s Messiah, why did he come? What was his mission?

God Put Forward His Messiah

The offended party makes the first step.

What does ‘Messiah’ mean?

God put forth his Son, our Messiah - to heal the family issues.

As a Propitiation by his Blood

A painful, costly, price often needs to be paid to reconcile family.

Propitiation is the price that was paid, and the resulting peace that is achieved.

What is propitiation?

It is the taking away of just wrath, and so making propitious - favorable, again.

Our Messiah took all the wrong, and absorbed it into himself.

To be Received by Faith

The gift of reconciliation is freely and sincerely offered to all.

Can we change?

What does this faith look like?

Maybe we can’t change, but God can change us.

When you embrace that gift, you realize, ‘I need to change.’

Our Messiah came to reconcile the fallen world to himself. To heal the family.

To Show God’s Righteousness

What is Righteousness?

So, here is the problem: Sin must be punished, but his people must be saved.

How can God work that out?

Divine Forbearance

God did not immediately deal with sin. Why?

What is a Theodicy?

Through the blood and righteousness of our Messiah, sinners can come home.

God’s Messiah’s mission was more than merely the forgiveness of sins.

He gives the broken and the flawed, the estranged, a new status.

God is just, and the justifier to everyone who believes.

Our Messiah came to make the family whole again.

Our Messiah came so that we might come home again, for Christmas.

What Does the Bible Say About the Incarnation?

The incarnation means that God’s Son, who was a Spirit and never had a body, took on a human body and life just like ours. When God first created humanity, He gave them a law to obey. If they obeyed it, they would know eternal blessing. If they disobeyed it, they would know eternal death. Sadly, our ancestors disobeyed, shattering our relationship with God.

But because of His great love our creator made a way to repair our relationship with Him. God’s Son took to Himself our human nature: He had a body and a soul just like ours and lived an entire human life like us, except instead of disobeying, He would love God and His neighbor perfectly. And He would do it without any special assistance from His divine nature. He would be hungry and tired just like us. He would be tempted to sin just like us. He would have relationships that blessed and saddened Him, just like us. And yet He always loved His heavenly Father and His neighbors, just like we had failed to do. God was born as the man, Jesus, so that one of us would finally live in obedience.

In addition, it was also necessary for God the Son to become human because as one of us He needed to bear our punishment for disobedience: death. He needed to die, but of course as God, that was impossible, since God cannot die. Someone, no matter how loved, would have to die for our disobedience, only a human could do that. And, because Jesus was also God, He was the only one strong enough to bear up under the wrath that we deserved.

As the incarnate God/man, Jesus lived the life we should have lived and died the death we deserved. And He continues to represent us, still incarnate, as the God/Man standing in heaven for us.

Call to Worship: Luke 1:68-69, 72-75

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for He has visited and redeemed His people and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of His servant David…, to show the mercy promised to our fathers and to remember His holy covenant, the oath that He swore to our father Abraham, to grant us that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve Him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before Him all our days.

Salutation: Isaiah 42:1-4; 2 Peter 1:2

Behold My servant, whom I uphold, My chosen, in whom My soul delights; I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry aloud or lift up His voice, or make it heard in the street; a bruised reed He will not break, and a faintly burning wick He will not quench; He will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not grow faint or be discouraged till He has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for His law.

May grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.

Invocation Prayer

Hymn of Worship #194: O Come, O Come, Emmanuel (Stanzas 1, 2, 3)

Confession of Faith: Westminster Confession 8:2-3

2. The Son of God, the second person of the Trinity, being very and eternal God, of one substance and equal with the Father, did, when the fullness of time was come, take upon Him man’s nature, with all the essential properties, and common infirmities thereof, yet without sin; being conceived by the power of the Holy Ghost, in the womb of the virgin Mary, of her substance. So that two whole, perfect, and distinct natures, the Godhead and the manhood, were inseparably joined together in one person, without conversion, composition, or confusion. Which person is very God, and very man, yet one Christ, the only Mediator between God and man.

3. The Lord Jesus, in His human nature thus united to the divine, was sanctified, and anointed with the Holy Spirit, above measure, having in Him all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge; in whom it pleased the Father that all fullness should dwell; to the end that, being holy, harmless, undefiled, and full of grace and truth, He might be thoroughly furnished to execute the office of a Mediator and Surety. Which office He took not unto Himself, but was thereunto called by His Father, who put all power and judgment into His hand, and gave Him commandment to execute the same.

Call to Confession of Sin: Matthew 1:21

You shall call His name Jesus, for He shall save His people from their sins.

Silent Prayer

Assurance of Pardon: Colossians 2:13-14

Great is Thy faithfulness, great is Thy faithfulness
Morning by morning new mercies I see.
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided.
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord unto me.

And He will sever every prideful lip
Judge those who think to triumph through their chatter,
Who say they have no lord and cannot slip. (Refrain)
3. The poor are pressed and struggle in their sighing
Our Lord will rise and bring them safely through
The wicked press and crowd, the poor are crying.
Our Lord will save; His promises are true. (Refrain)

Refined in fire and tested seven-fold.

Why was Achan and his family punished so severely?

There are several reasons for the severe penalty God inflicted upon Achan. For one thing, Achan’s sin affected the entire nation of Israel. In Joshua 7:1 God says that “the Israelites” acted unfaithfully and that His anger burned “against Israel.” The nation as a whole was in a covenant relationship with God and, when one member transgressed that covenant, the entire nation’s relationship with Him was damaged. Achan’s sin defiled the other members of the community as well as himself. A similar situation is seen in the sin of Adam and Eve and its effect on the whole of mankind. Adam and Eve’s rebellion destroyed the perfect communion the human race would have enjoyed with God.

Further, Achan’s sin caused God’s blessing upon the Israelites to be withheld in their subsequent battle against the city of Ai, and the Israelites “were routed by the men of Ai, who killed about thirty-six of them” (Joshua 7:4-5). Thirty-six men who were not involved in Achan’s sin died because of Achan’s sin. He stole that which was “devoted to destruction” and so brought destruction on others. God explained to Joshua, “That is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies; they turn their backs and run because they have been made liable to destruction” (Joshua 7:12; see also 22:20). We fool ourselves if we think that our sin affects only us. Disobedience brings ruin even upon the innocent. Sin’s effects go beyond the initial sinner.

Also, the gold and silver Achan stole was stolen from God Himself. The precious metals were to be added to the treasury of the Lord, and, in stealing them, Achan robbed God directly. Achan’s disobedience was also an insult to God’s holiness and His right to command His people in the manner He sees fit. Even so, God gave Achan a night to consider his sin and come to Him in repentance (Joshua 7:13). Achan did not avail himself of God’s mercy and patience, however. The gold and silver Achan coveted had a stronger pull on his allegiance. Is it any wonder that, in the face of such insult, God would choose to destroy him?

But why, we might ask, did God destroy Achan’s family as well? The Bible doesn’t give us God’s exact reasons for destroying Achan’s family, although Proverbs 15:27 does say that “a greedy man brings trouble to his family.” In the case of Achan, all we can do is speculate. Perhaps it was an object lesson to the rest of the nation, a lesson they learned after Korah’s rebellion (Numbers 16) but which needed to be reinforced. Perhaps Achan’s children had already begun to exhibit their father’s traits of covetousness, disobedience, and disrespect for God’s commands. Most likely, they had actually helped Achan hide the stuff and were, in fact, accomplices to the crime.

There is no way to know all of God’s reasons for what seems to us His harsh punishment of Achan and his family. He doesn’t always explain His reasoning to us, nor does He have to. The story of Achan and many other biblical narratives give us sufficient information to understand that God is holy and that He is not to be disobeyed without risking dire consequences.
