Pocket reduction surgery treats the deep gum pockets that form at the edge of the gumline. These pockets can be difficult or impossible to effectively clean at home. With pocket reduction, these pockets are opened, thoroughly cleaned, then put back in place in a position that greatly reduces their depth. By minimizing the depth of the gum pockets, we can ensure that you will be able to avoid excessive bacterial growth in your gums by maintaining proper oral hygiene habits at home.

Third molars, or wisdom teeth, are the last set of permanent molars to emerge. These teeth are also the most likely to require extraction, due to any of several complications. However, other teeth may also require extraction if they cannot be saved by root canal therapy or other treatment. Some of the most common reasons to have teeth extracted include:

Crowding or small mouth – emerging teeth may cause other teeth to shift or crack due to lack of space
Decay or infection – when a tooth is affected by extreme decay or infection that cannot be corrected with filling or root canal treatment, it may require extraction

Post-Extraction Care

After your extraction, you will need to be driven home by a friend or family member. You will require rest, but lie with your head propped on a pillow to prevent prolonged bleeding.

We will apply gauze when your extraction is complete. When it becomes soaked, change it for a fresh piece. Use pain medication and ice packs as directed for pain and swelling. If bleeding continues beyond 24 hours, contact our office immediately.

For the first few days following extraction, limit your diet to soft foods. Avoid smoking or using a straw, as the pressures created by these actions can slow clotting and loosen sutures.

How do I care for my implants?

You will need to care for your implants just as you care for your natural teeth. Brushing and flossing are important to prevent the build-up of plaque. Regular dental cleanings and exams are still an important part of ensuring great oral health.

Is it painful to receive a dental implant?

With the advances of modern technology, most patients report feeling very little discomfort both during and after treatment. Our team is trained and certified to offer sedation with oral surgery, which provides a relaxed, comfortable experience during treatment.

How long will my implants last?

With proper care and treatment, your implants can last a lifetime, just like natural teeth.

Crown lengthening treatment removes excess gum tissue from around one or more of your teeth, exposing additional tooth structure above your gum line. This may be recommended if you have a “gummy” smile or to provide better access to correct issues with decayed or broken teeth or infected gums.

During treatment, your gums are moved away from your tooth and jawbone. The bone will be smoothed, if needed, prior to reattaching the gums lower on the teeth. With more tooth structure showing above the gumline, your teeth now appear longer and your gums less prominent.

In the rear portion of the upper jaw, the maxillary sinus cavity lies just beyond the jawbone. In many cases, that cavity is so large that there is insufficient bone to allow the secure placement of dental implants. When this occurs, our doctor may recommend a sinus graft. Like bone grafting, a sinus graft involves the surgical application of donor tissue to augment the existing bone structure. Depending on your individual needs, this may be done at the time of implant placement or done in advance and allowed to fully heal before your implants are placed. In either case, your sinus grafting will ensure you have enough strong bone in your upper jaw to anchor your dental implants.

Dental implants are an aesthetic and effective solution for tooth loss. However, to place a dental implant, you must have sufficient healthy bone structure in the area where the implant will be placed. This bone serves to anchor the implant in place and ensure your tooth replacement solution is strong and long-lasting.

When teeth are lost or removed without replacement, resorption (bone loss) can occur. If we find that you have experienced bone loss in the area where you need implants, we may recommend a bone graft. A bone graft augments the healthy bone in your jaw and stimulates regeneration that further restores your jawbone structure.

A frenum (also called frenulum) is a tissue attachment that holds or connects an area such as the tongue, lip or cheek. Occasionally a frenum might be exceptionally tight, thick or short. Frenul pull can contribute to localized areas of gum recession. It can also play a role in creating gaps between teeth.

A frenectomy is a simple surgery to excise the frenum. This procedure generally takes less than fifteen minutes and has minimal postoperative discomfort.

Diastema

A diastema is a large gap between teeth. A diastema can result from an unusually thick or tight frenum that attaches close to the teeth. Frenectomy, combined with orthodontics, can correct this problem.

Tongue-tied

Normal tongue motion can be constricted with a tight frenum. This can tug on the gingiva of the lower anterior teeth, creating recession. In severe cases, this may affect speech. Eliminating this attachment can restore proper tongue movements and eliminate gingival pull.

There are two types of gum grafting: free gingival graft and connective tissue graft. Each serves a specific purpose in treating gum recession. Our periodontist will recommend the treatment that is right for your individual needs.

Free Gingival Graft: this graft is designed to thicken thinning gums in cases where there is no tooth root exposure. By thickening the gum tissue, your gums are more resistant to infection. Additionally, the free gingival graft helps to prevent further gum recession.

Connective Tissue Graft: this graft is designed to treat cases where tooth root surfaces have been exposed. The graft is used to cover the exposed tissue and help to reestablish the proper gum contours within the mouth. The success of this method often depends on the amount of bone loss in the area where the exposure has occurred.
