Johns Hopkins’ Inheritance Baltimore initiative has played a crucial role in returning a 19th-century embroidered sampler to St. James Episcopal Church in time for its 200th anniversary!
Founded in 1824 by William Levington, the first Black Episcopalian church below the Mason-Dixon Line, St. James continues to serve the spiritual needs of Baltimoreans. The sampler, a beautiful piece of needlework presented to James Bosley in 1832, is now on display at the Episcopal Diocesan Center of Maryland until July 10.
“It could be the earliest or the oldest artifact that we know about, and it’s in great condition,” says Lawrence Jackson, Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of English and History at Johns Hopkins. This historic tapestry represents a significant part of the efforts at reclamation and reparations.

Exciting changes are underway at the century-old Johns Hopkins University School of Education building! Comprehensive renovations will preserve the historic exterior while transforming the interior to better meet the needs of students and faculty.
This major renovation will:
🔹 Reconfigure and update classrooms to accommodate growing programs and new technology
🔹 Create collaborative workspaces and neighborhood clusters for research
🔹 Add mission-specific areas like a recording/visualization studio and a broadcast studio
🔹 Upgrade building systems, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and fire alarm systems
Renovations are expected to be completed by December 2025, with the building reopening in early 2026. While construction is ongoing, students, faculty, and staff have relocated to the McCauley Building and 2701 N. Charles St.
Stay tuned for more updates on this transformative project!
