Motherhood is Magical ✨ but it’s also challenging. And rewarding. And exhausting. And joyful…
Being a mother to a special needs child comes with additional responsibilities.
Caregiving is an incredible responsibility, but it can also be challenging and isolating. The goal of In the Midst is to provide a safe place for mothers of special needs children to gather and grow in knowledge together.
In the Midst is a therapeutic support group for mothers of special needs children.

👟Parenting teens is like entering an advanced level of a video game… you have a little experience and you’re invested, but it can be TOUGH.
👟 One thing that teenagers crave is CONNECTION.

God is Joyful
✨in difficult moments, joy can be hard to access. Worry, stress, fear, depression and anger can rob us of joy.

God is faithful
✨Research is clear on the benefits of gratitude- even the smallest practices of gratitude (as little as 15 minutes a day/5 days per week) can enhance mental wellness, promote changes in perspective, and positively affect your physical health.
✨God’s faithfulness means our worry and stress are unnecessary- we can trust Him. His Word is true and His reputation is perfect.
✨From prayer to journaling, there are many ways to practice gratitude. What’s important is the consistency. Join us in developing habits of gratitude so when life gets difficult you have already laid the foundation.

Research is clear on the benefits of gratitude- even the smallest practices of gratitude (as little as 15 minutes a day/5 days per week) can enhance mental wellness, promote changes in perspective, and positively affect your physical health.
So why can gratitude be so difficult to put in to practice? Maybe it’s distraction. When life is busy, it’s easy to overlook the practice of slowing down and expressing gratitude. Maybe it’s uncertainty. When we aren’t sure how to practice gratitude it can be difficult to start the practice.
Join us as we build a habit of gratitude this year. We are going to start each week in prayer. Prayer is a simple practice to weave in to your day to express gratitude. Prayers can be spoken, silent, sung, or even journaled. If prayer isn’t the language of your gratitude, try starting your day by journaling 3 things you are grateful for. If you need an accountability buddy, start a text thread with your family or friends where you each contribute one thought of gratitude each morning.
Start your day with humility and gratefulness, regardless of your circumstances, and see how your attitude and mental health shift over time.

“When should I start counseling?”
“Is this ‘serious enough’ to need counseling?”
“Do you think my child/spouse/marriage would benefit from therapy?”
I get some version of this question ALL THE TIME. And the truth is… if you’re asking, therapy is probably a good idea!
There are many reasons why people seek therapy. From transitions to trauma and everything in between, I like to give two pieces of advice for those deciding whether or not to seek therapy:
You don’t have to have an emergency to seek therapy
Therapy isn’t permanent- if you start, you aren’t committed for ever. It might be worth trying!
Choose a word
❤️💚You may be familiar with the practice of choosing a word for the new year. The idea is to let the word you choose guide and motivate you throughout the year.
❤️💚We want to encourage you to mix it up this year and choose a word for this holiday season. Our hope is that having a word or phrase of intentionality will help bring cohesiveness, peace, and mindfulness to your holiday experience. Whether you choose to focus on family, fun, preparation, or any other word, that feels representative to you this year, we hope that you can incorporate your word in ways that allow you to enjoy this season to the fullest.

When I first started clinical work, I was fascinated by the role of parents in a family system. Sure, parents play a huge part in the mental health of their children, but I had a deep passion for learning more about the mental health and wellness of parents themselves. I can confidently say after so many years in practice, that the mental health of mothers is beautifully complex in a way that is different from any other type of client.
In honor of Mother’s Day I thought it would be fun to shed light on some of the common mental health stressors I see in mothers, and offer some encouragement. Read more on the blog here: https://refinerycounselingcenter.com/mental-health-of-mamas/
