It’s so important to screen for celiac disease and not self diagnose IBS.

Tell us about your celiac disease symptoms. We can tell you that diarrhea and weight loss are the classic celiac symptoms but currently only 27% of patients present with those complaints. Many people do not have classical gastrointestinal symptoms.

Before 1981, over 90% of patients diagnosed with celiac disease presented to their physician with diarrhea and weight loss as their major symptoms. Currently, only 27% of patients present with these classic symptoms, while 21% of patients are asymptomatic, and the majority (52%) of patients present with atypical symptoms such as constipation, anemia, osteoporosis, elevated liver function tests, neurologic disorders, reproductive disorders etc

If you think you may have a gluten-related disorder, it's important to first examine if you have celiac disease, an autoimmune response to gluten, before starting a gluten-free diet. 👨‍⚕️

If gluten is a problem for you, going back to gluten to get that diagnosis is harder than you could imagine. If you've experienced this, chime in below. 👇

When I have a new client presenting with GI symptoms, one of the first recommendations I provide is to get tested for celiac disease! Do NOT remove gluten from your diet until testing is complete as this can skew the results.

What are some symptoms of celiac disease? Celiac disease can be difficult to diagnose because it affects people differently. There are more than 200 known celiac disease symptoms which may occur in the digestive system or other parts of the body. Yoga is a terrific way to support both physical and emotional wellness -- that can also support your overall gut health and digestion! It doesn’t take much to get started, and you certainly don't need to bend and twist like a pretzel to get benefits. You simply need a calm environment, a supportive, comfortable surface to lie on (like a yoga mat or a rug), and an open mind.

This yoga sequence can be done daily, either as a gentle start to your day or as a way to slowly unwind in the evening in preparation for a restful night of sleep.

To my celiac patients, the list of purity protocol suppliers has changed….

Special Statement on Purity Protocol Gluten-Free Oats from Gluten Free Watchdog

Based on testing commissioned by Gluten Free Watchdog, we do not recommend the use GF Harvest brand oats as a source of purity protocol oats. This product line will not be included in the updated purity protocol listing on Gluten Free Watchdog.

Also based on testing commissioned by Gluten Free Watchdog, we do not recommend the use of Trader Joe’s gluten-free rolled oats. We have been unable to confirm the source of oats used by Trader Joe’s in this product. Based on language included on product packaging as well as information available on the Trader Joe’s website (see photos), consumers have assumed that the oats in this product are purity protocol.

Gluten Free Watchdog has spoken with all known suppliers of purity protocol oats in Canada (packaging reads product of Canada). According to these suppliers, none of them provide oats to Trader Joe’s. Trader Joe’s has been unable to provide us with the source of their oats.

Gluten Free Watchdog has temporarily removed from the website the listing of purity protocol suppliers. If you are a manufacturer and you sell single ingredient purity protocol gluten-free oat products sourced directly from Avena Foods, Montana Gluten Free, or MGM Seed & Grain/Bay State Milling ONLY, please contact us [email protected]. If you are a manufacturer who previously was included in this listing, please reach out again with updated information.

If you believe Trader Joe’s gluten-free rolled oats made you or a family member ill, please file a complaint with an FDA Consumer Complaint Coordinator. A listing is available at https://www.fda.gov/safety/report-problem-fda/consumer-complaint-coordinators.

Malnutrition can occur at ANY weight. And, visceral proteins (AKA albumin and prealbumin) are NOT good markers of nutritional status.
Please stop documenting that a patient could not be malnourished because they are in a larger body and their albumin is within normal limits. Thank you.

Gut Bacteria Linked With Long COVID 01/28/2022

"Gut microbiota influences the health of the host." This is a very fascinating article on Gut Bacteria Linked with Long-COVID

Gut Bacteria Linked With Long COVID 'To our knowledge, this is the first study to show that altered gut microbiome is strongly associated with persistent symptoms in patients with COVID up to 6 months after clearance of SARS-CoV-2 virus.'

05/10/2021

You’ve probably heard of a gluten sensitivity, but how is it different from celiac disease? Someone with a gluten sensitivity may have some similar symptoms to celiac disease, such as GI distress, headaches, and brain fog. However, there are some big differences: someone with a gluten sensitivity will not have the elevated antibodies or the same level of intestinal damage that someone with celiac disease would have. Gluten sensitivity is also clinically recognized to be less severe than celiac disease. Both conditions will see improvement with the removal of gluten from the diet

04/16/2021

The gut microbiota is so fascinating to me. I love what I do!! Here are the new findings from this study-

Long-term dietary patterns are associated with proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory features of the gut microbiome

► Diet-gut microbiome associations are consistent
across patients with intestinal disease (Crohn’s
disease, UC, IBS) and the general population.
► Higher intake of animal foods, processed
foods, alcohol and sugar, corresponds to a
microbial environment that is characteristic of
inflammation, and is associated with higher
levels of intestinal inflammatory markers.
► Plant-based foods are linked to short-chain
fatty acid (SCFA)-producers, microbial
metabolism of polysaccharides and a lower
abundance of pathobionts.
