2024 Beltrami County 4-H Program Highlight: Dog Training Program Part 1
Each spring and summer 4-H'ers take part in weekly training sessions led by local dog trainers. These sessions are designed to encourage a strong bond between the youth handler and dog while also engaging in skill building in multiple disciplines including rally, obedience, showmanship, and agility!
By the end of the season, youth have the opportunity to showcase their learning during our 4-H dog shows. Help us celebrate our youth participants and their pups! πβοΈπ
We need to deconstruct our exhibit hall displays! Please come beginning at 4:30pm to help move large furniture, put away display items, sweep, and complete several other tasks. The process should take less than an hour and a half. Giovanni's pizza will be served afterward, and youth who show up to help can pick up their premium check before heading home! π
Please let Frankie know if you are planning on coming so we can get a head count for pizza. π
Are you exhibiting livestock as a 4-H'er during the Minnesota State Fair? Complete your livestock interview TODAY! π
All 4-H livestock exhibitors (except Dairy) need to complete this process by Tuesday, Aug. 20 at 6:00 p.m. in order to be eligible for higher than a blue ribbon. More information β‘ z.umn.edu/StateFairLivestockInterviews
Contact your local Extension educator with any questions about the process.

Beltrami Co. 4-H Thursday Update Monday -Thursday 8:30 - 3:00 and Fridays 8:30 - 2:00 Plan ahead with the 4-H schedule of events calendar for the 2023-2024 program year...
After an incredibly busy series of county fair showcases, we are going to be sharing several highlights in the coming weeks! We want to congratulate all of our incredible 4-H'ers on their successes this year and are thrilled to be sending a delegation of more than 60 youth to state showcase opportunities including general projects, livestock, dog, horse, and shooting sports!
Our first highlight features a tour led by 4-H staff with Beltrami County Commissioners Richard Anderson, Joe Gould, and Craig Gaasvig (pictured from left to right). We were also joined by Master Gardener Amber Bury (not pictured). The group had the opportunity to see the 4-H Exhibit Hall, several livestock barns, and watched part of the 4-H Poultry Show!
The best part of the tour was hearing from two of our active 4-H'ers, Saige G. and Brityn W. Both youth shared about their personal 4-H journeys and project experience. It was great way to start a day at the Beltrami County Fair! ππ€

4-H youth from Beltrami and Clearwater Counties had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience using a state of the art demonstration tool called βHelga the Hereford.β According to the University of Minnesota Extension website, "Helga the Hereford is a full-size cow model designed to simulate dystocia events (difficult calving)... The model helps participants experience an entire assisted calving including manipulating calf position, placing chains on the calf, using lubricants properly, pulling the calf with or without a calf jack, and post-calving procedures."
This session took place at the Beltrami County Fairgrounds and was led by Joe Armstrong, DVM. Dr. Armstrong is an Extension cattle production systems educator with the University. 4-Hβers learned the importance of using appropriate protocol and equipment to have the best possible outcome for calving and each had a chance to manipulate the model and practice the techniques.
Some helpful information youth walked away with included learning how to reposition and pull, figuring out how to identify different anatomy, and learning how to determine the position of the calf. All of the 4-Hβers also participated in sessions about biosecurity, identifying dairy cattle breeds and characteristics, and basic cuts of beef. Overall, this was a great experience for young people to learn from an industry professional and their peers.

The Beltrami County 4-H Drill Teams have been hard at work despite the uncooperative weather to bring together two exciting performances for the summer season. Drill Team performances consist of a choreographed routine set to music performed by 4-Hβers on horseback. You will not want to miss out on their showcase!
We have a senior drill team and a junior drill team this year! Our senior team is made up of 10 youth grades six and up. The junior team has six youth grades three through five.
Make sure to check out their performances during the Beltrami County Fair or during the Clearwater County Fair Rhythm and Ride event!
4-H Youth had the opportunity to partake in a swine education day where they learned about ear notching and tagging. Ear notching is an identification system used to identify individual piglets by litter number and birth order. This system can be difficult to learn, but youth had the opportunity to create their own pig and practice notching and tagging! This information will be useful while identifying their swine projects in the future.
