Berea College Sociology Department
This is the Sociology Program at Berea College
The Sociology Department has extended the deadline for the Thomas A. Boyd Graduate Scholarship to May 1st, 2021. The scholarship is available to graduating seniors and alumni of the Department of Sociology who have been accepted to or are enrolled in a graduate program for further professional development. Scholarships support graduate work in any sociology-related field, from public policy to social work to law to library science as long as the degrees prepare graduates for work that serves the public good in some way. The number and amount of awards will vary depending on the number of applicants and stated needs.

Attention all prospective Soc Majors! As you may know, it is time for fourth-semester students to begin the process of declaring their majors. In light of that, the Sociology Club would like to invite anyone interested in Sociology as a major or minor to attend a virtual Q&A session! This session will feature senior student Al Killen, who is a Sociology major graduating this May, as well as other students of the Soc major. Attendees are invited to chat with Al and other students and inquire about Soc curriculum, graduation requirements, potential internships, and possible career fields of interest. This session will take place via Zoom this Thursday @ 6 PM! If you have any questions, please email Patience Martin ([email protected]). Posted below in the comments will be the link for the scheduled Zoom meeting. We hope to see several faces there- old and new!

Calling all Berea College Sociology Majors! The Sociology Department is looking for Sociology major volunteers, who are comfortable with being recorded and having that recording shared later, to help us with the making of a short video clip. You would only need to spare a few minutes of your time, as you would only have to answer one question regarding Berea residential life amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.

Dear Sociology Department Alumni,
The Sociology Department would like to invite you to join us again this year for a gathering during Alumni weekend. We’ll be hosting a light brunch on Saturday, November 16 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. in Frost 103 to give everyone a chance to mingle and to allow our current students the opportunity to hear about what our majors have been doing since their graduation from Berea. We hope you’ll consider joining us for part or all of the event!
If you plan to attend, please RSVP to Andrea Woodward at [email protected] by Wednesday, November 13, and please include the number of people you plan to bring with you so we can be sure to have enough food available (partners and children are most welcome!). No advanced preparation will be necessary on the part of our alumni—the conversation will be informal, but we will especially love to hear about what alumni are doing, what skills they learned at Berea or courses they took that were most helpful in their career path, what they were especially glad they did or wish they would’ve done differently to prepare themselves for life after graduation, etc.
Thanks in advance for considering fitting the Sociology Department into your Homecoming plans—we hope to see you on November 16 at 10:30 a.m.!

The Sociology Club will be getting signatures for a petition for a recall on the Madison County Fiscal Court Ordinance 19-14 AD and Valorem Rate, wherein said ordinance shall increase AD Valorem Tax Rates from 8.2 cents/$100.00 to 19.6 cents/$100.00. The problems lies in that this increase in taxes would hurt the elderly and low-income residents of Madison County. The Sociology Club will be at dining this Monday from 7am to 10:30am to get people who have already registered to vote to sign this petition.
