"I love that Berea College teaches students that there is value in learning to work hard, whether you work as a janitor, dining services server, or a teaching assistant. Another idea that was reinforced for me while at Berea College is the importance and joy of being a lifelong learner and the importance of having a growth mindset. I try to impart these values to my students even though I teach math." Linda Williams ’83

"My Berea story is all about enlightenment. Coming from a small town with little diversity, I was exposed to a ton of new lifestyles and people that I had never encountered. I learned a lot about myself and how I perceive the world, and it changed me for the better. I’m glad I was able to experience so much diversity and develop a more open mind to take into my personal and professional life after Berea." Kenna Nichols ’19

"I want my students to know that they should view themselves as someone who can overcome obstacles, such as poverty or a troubled history, in order to turn things around and invest in themselves through hard work and perseverance. I will always appreciate the investment Berea College made in me, but I also view my college experience as an investment I made in myself." Sara Sexton ’99

Alumni Spotlight: Benhardt Christson’19 💡 Benhardt Christson is a successful strategy consultant at Accenture, where he works with clients to develop strategies for market entry, sales growth, and client engagement. He is also an MBA candidate at the Warrington College of Business and constantly strives for more. But his journey to this role began at Berea College, where he studied Business Administration with a Concentration in Accounting
According to Benhardt, the demanding coursework at Berea was incredibly helpful in preparing him for his career. But the opportunities outside of the classroom really set him up for success. Through paid internships and opportunities like the Cornell weekend, Benhardt was able to network and gain valuable experience that helped him land his first job at KPMG in the financial diligence department.

The Inauguration of Dr. Cheryl L. Nixon We are pleased to welcome you to the Inauguration of Dr. Cheryl L. Nixon, the 10th president of Berea College, on April 6, 2024.
At Berea, Adrienne Keller Eisenmenger '05 took up the position of student chaplain, a trained resident in one of Berea’s many residence halls who provides spiritual and emotional support to students who need it.
“I think that chaplain program at the time was unique to Berea,” Eisenmenger said. “Many times, you have a crisis in your life, and you may not want to talk to the actual adults about it. But you do want to talk to somebody that’s just there to listen and support.”
Eisenmenger’s desire to serve seeped into all aspects of her academic life. While majoring in elementary education, her study-abroad experience in Costa Rica turned her focus to sustainability, sanitation and water conservation, all subjects that focus on improving the living conditions of people across the globe.

Berea College
Berea College is distinctive among institutions of higher learning. Berea awards four-year tuition scholarships to all its students, who because of financial circumstances cannot otherwise afford a high-quality, residential, liberal arts education.
All students are required to work at least 10 hours per week in campus and service jobs. Berea's student labor program creates an atmosphere of democratic living that emphasizes the dignity of all work and provides opportunities for students to earn money for their rooms, books and board.
Alumni from Berea distinguish themselves and the college in many fields. Graduates include community leaders throughout the region, a Nobel Prize-winning chemist, a U.S. Cabinet Secretary, the inventor of touch screen technology, and other alumni who live out the college's motto: "God has made of one blood all peoples of the earth."
