Washington Monthly has ranked Berea College as the top liberal arts college in the nation in its 2024 College Guide and Rankings, up one spot from the 2023 rankings.
“Washington Monthly rankings are significant because they take into account the affordability element – that students are coming to college and they graduate debt-free while also explaining what higher ed institutions are doing for the public good,” Nixon added. “We are honored to have been named the magazine’s top liberal arts college in the nation, and we will continue working to help our students graduate with low debt, an exceptional liberal arts degree, a commitment to service, and an excellent job outlook.”

Meet Gabriela, a senior majoring in Political Science with a minor in Peace and Social Justice. During her study abroad in Argentina, she delved into the harsh realities of the region's history through her classes. In "Dictatorship and Democracy," she explored the brutalities endured during the dictatorships in Argentina, Brazil, and Chile. In "Psychology of Trauma," she studied the profound mental and physical effects of trauma, focusing on the experiences of Argentine citizens during the dictatorship. The Gilman Scholarship, which Gabriela received, was crucial in making this study abroad experience possible by helping with expenses.
Reflecting on her journey, Gabriela says, "This program exceeded my expectations. It has helped me grow both personally and professionally. Argentina, you have my heart."

Berea College's Office of Continuous Improvement, established in 2013, has been a driving force in enhancing campus efficiency. The office has 178 projects completed and 92 Lean Green Belt Certifications awarded. Their work helps create a more effective environment for both students and staff, ultimately contributing to the college’s goal of providing a high-quality educational experience.
A student in the 2023 internship cohort shared her experience: “Not only did I gain valuable skills in process improvement and lean management through Lean Applied to Business training, but I also had the chance to work as part of a team, attend my first conference, and see much of the behind-the-scenes work that often goes unnoticed on our campus. The Green Belt certification I earned through this experience, in particular, will definitely set me apart after graduation, as the hands-on skills I gained are exactly what employers look for in today's competitive job market.” - Jena '24

Berea College has served as a place where Kentucky's most underserved and financially challenged students could get an education and a chance at making a future. Berea was the South’s first integrated, co-educational college — and since 1892, has not charged students a dime for tuition.
"Ninety-five percent of our student body received a Pell Grant, which would be an indication that they're coming from very limited financial resources. You know, the average household income of our student body is around $32,000 a year for the entire year for that family. When you put those two financial metrics in play, you would think, OK, well, these students are coming from certainly very limited kind of backgrounds," Hodson said. "That's true, but what's great about our student body is just the promise that they bring, the grit that they bring, the desire to do better than what maybe their family's been able to do before them. You're going to find students who are top notch academically, who are scholars in their own right, who are looking for an opportunity like Berea can offer where the support here is going to be much more intense, much more supportive than what they may find in other institutions."

Coumba Ngaide, a senior nursing student, said all her life she has had a love for caring for others. She even shared a lot of time with a friend who spent much of his life in the children’s hospital before passing away. Although her passion for care has led her to nursing, it hasn’t always been easy to pay the extra fees that come with the program. “Books were costing $1,000, that’s books and access codes and uniforms were costing another $200, and all that comes out of our pockets,” said Ngaide. She said she is very thankful that her last year will look different, with her balance due shrinking by more than $100.
