As we turn towards the holiday break, we honor and recognize the amazing teachers and staff at Thousand Oaks!

Perhaps roles that may be lesser known is our awesome Classroom Volunteers that pour out the love at Thousand Oaks! For the past 3 decades, the Berkeley Public Schools Fund's Berkeley Schools Volunteers (BSV) program has been the go-to for community members eager to support learners and enrich our public schools.

Check out these two spotlights of 2 of TO's most veteran BSV volunteers: Marcia Tilford in Teacher Libby's class (recently published and pictured here) and Rene Kvidahl in Teacher Becky's class (published last spring). Staff Spotlight! Angélica Pérez!
Meet our amazing Literacy Coach (and mother to two daughters), Angélica Pérez! With over 26 years of expertise in education and reading, here at T.O., she specializes in literacy interventions and creating a love of reading in our students for the last 11 years. She began her career as an elementary school teacher and has brought her love of teaching and reading to focus on reading. Teacher Angélica brings her vibrant personality and can-do spirit to programs like our reading intervention, including piloting a program last year on early intervention (with Sarah Moreno) with 2nd grade readers, resulting in the least number of students needing additional intervention following the program. Throughout her tenure at T.O., she has worked with many of the intervention staff, and family engagement office to support our community beyond the books, with a student-first mindset. Just this week she led two amazing literacy workshops combining caregivers and students to focus on reading and vocabulary skills. Thank you for being a part of our community!

Meet Mr. Ernesto - our Family Engagement and Equity Specialist, fun Friday founder, rock climber, hot sauce sharer, and all around joy bringer to our school community. Mr. Ernesto joined us last school year and has made a huge impact on our community culture already! His office functions as center for teachers and parents and is an advocate for connecting these groups and helping our families feel connected to the school and staff. Collaborating with the district office, school parent groups like ELAC, and Berkeley Public School Funds, Ernesto is able to assist in creating fun events in addition to supporting our families and their needs.

In addition to T.O.’s new Talent Show for 3-5 grades with Mr. Aaron and presenting about Cesar Chavez, or Fun Friday games and sports at lunchtime, Mr. Ernesto is helping organize the newly formed “Groupo de Español” (Spanish club) who meets once a month to discover Latin heritage, culture and important figures in history and the present.

Education and especially outdoor education was always a focus for Ernesto as he grew up here in The Bay Area. His vision is to provide opportunities for our kids to “feel comfortable to try or do anything” and never be held back by cost or other limitations to experiencing the joy of the outdoors. Mr. Ernestos’ door is always open whether you need an advocate for your family or just want to chat about food or outdoor adventures! Look for more events he is planning including Cinco de Mayo celebration, on the pocket folder near the main entrance. He updates this regularly with District and School events and opportunities. Thank you, Mr. Ernesto, for being part of our vibrant community!

Staff spotlight!! Our T.O. Staff really is the secret ingredient in our “special sauce.”

Meet Ms. Tameka, officially “School service aid”, “Kinder aid”, and "Campus school aid". Ms Tameka has 3 children who have gone through Thousand Oaks Elementary and has been part of the community for the last 17 years!

Her joy shines brightly through her work as Co-Coordinator of Voices of the Village. These amazing leaders in our school, including Ms. Sylvia, (who co-created the program with Ms. Cherry) provide support, grant funding, and celebration to our African American/Black Community in Thousands Oaks. In the winter, they collected over 30 holiday gifts for children. Ms. Tameka created and hosts a monthly program called “The Journey” every 3rd Wed of the month, coaching and mentoring students. If you know a student who could benefit from this, please reach out to Ms. Tameka or Ms. Sylvia! Be sure to watch the calendar for upcoming events during the rest of Black History Month (Potluck 2/24!) and throughout the year! Thank you Ms. Tameka for being a vibrant light in our community!
