BSC Retrofit Campaign

The Berkeley Student Cooperative provides low-cost housing to 1275 students.

We've been around since 1933, which means the foundations of our co-op are strong, but the buildings themselves...well, they could use a touch-up. We don't want them to fall down (on us) in the next big earthquake, so we are raising money to retrofit our homes, house-by-house. Our members are pulling together to raise money from family, friends, professors, and classmates through their own, unique

What I'd Do for a Retrofit - Berkeley Student Cooperative - Emilie Blauwhoff

Emilie from Cloyne will be sharing Dutch culture!

"Help us raise money for the Berkeley Student Cooperative!

Have you noticed the relatively large amount of Dutch (-speaking) people in Cloyne? There's 5 of us! We believe we should spread the Dutchness even more, by making our fellow BSC-members and anyone else in the Berkeley community equally enthusiastic about out wonderful country. What better way to do this than to introduce you to our wonderful 'Sinterklaas'? Sinterklaas is not Santa Claus, since he's way more awesome.

Want to find out what's so awesome about Sinterklaas? Donate some money! The more money we get, the more amazing Dutch Sinterklaas things you will get to experience. This is how it works:

200 dollars: we will organize a Sinterklaas lecture
300 dollars: we will bake Dutch Sinterklaas goodies to go along with the lecture
400 dollars: we will introduce the awesome tradition of 'setting your shoe'
500 dollars: we will show an amazing Dutch Sinterklaas movie
600 dollars: we will sing some Sinterklaas songs
700 dollars: we will dress up as Sinterklaas and his 'Zwarte Pieten'
800 dollars: we will write an actual Sinterklaas poem and perform it

Want to experience this awesome cultural event? Then donate! And for our friends back home: do you want us to spread our amazing culture to enlighten this bunch of American Santa Claus admirers? Then donate!"

What I'd Do for a Retrofit - Berkeley Student Cooperative - Sam Strimling

Sam from Lothlorien will be doing random acts of kindness!
"It is very difficult — yet important — to take time in everyday life to show my appreciation for all the beautiful people that surround me. This campaign is premised on the idea that each small, random act of kindness can make someone's day exponentially better.

Here is my promise:
$50 and I will go to the bank, get $10 made into pennies and throw them everywhere.
$100 and I will dress in an animal suit and stand on Sproul for a half an hour with a sign that says: "FREE HUGS!"
$200 and I will bake 200 cookies and hand them out on Sproul.
$300 and I will get $10 made into quarters and run around being a parking meter fairy.
$400 and I will write at least 20 heartfelt " thank you for being my friend" notes.
$500 and I will find someone to accompany me on the guitar and I will serenade someone.
$700 I will bake a cake for at least four other co-ops and deliver them in the middle of the night.
$1,000 and I will learn a song on the guitar and serenade someone.

Thanks for supporting me in my efforts to be a better person!

Lots of Love,
Sam"

What I'd Do for a Retrofit - Berkeley Student Cooperative - Jill Lorack

Jill from Hoyt will be running 50 miles! "I love running but, unfortunately, I never have time to go for a run. I plan to fix that by making my campaign project to run 50 miles around the Bay Area, receiving donations for each mile that I run. I will be running on coastal trails, through urban landscapes, and alongside the beautiful San Francisco Bay (and probably up quite a few hills). I'll take pictures, invite friends, and have a grand old time. Also, I have a blog! Follow me on my running escapades."

What I'd Do for a Retrofit - Berkeley Student Cooperative - Gabe Schwartzman

Gabe the Kingman Kitchen Manager will cook you local organic bacon!

"I'll buy and cook a bunch of low cost, well sourced bacon (organic, local, free range...etc.) and if you are not in the area I'll mail it to you (uncooked, quick mail).
Help me raise money for the Berkeley Student Cooperative!"
