"I am proud to be a part of GKCWP. My Summer Institute experience changed the way I teach. Through my GKCWP, I have gained wonderful friends and a network that provides the support I have needed throughout my career. It has also allowed me opportunities I would never have had without it. I look forward to continuing this experience and the work we do to support our community." ~Kate Kraybill, GKCWP - Greater Kansas City Writing Project https://nwp.org/50

"A single comment on the 2018 page of our local chapter, the Capital District Writing Project, says it all: 'These are my people.' Though there is a plethora of engaging digital data on the page, these four words will always resonate with me most simply because they capture the essence of what the program offers: a sense of community. A writer’s practice is often one of solitude, as it begs for the kind of quiet reflection that leads to focus and productivity. Even when creative and collaborative activities precede the work, the writer must eventually face the blank page, or a blank screen and a cold keyboard—alone. But my colleagues in the program have truly become 'my people.' They have seen me in my moments of extreme strength and the moments of incredible vulnerability. We have cried together and laughed together. Without them, I would not be the writer and educator that I am today." ~Christina Taylor, Capital District Writing Project https://nwp.org/50

"I came upon NWP via The Drew Writing project. This was during the summer of 2020 after the death of George Floyd. It was therapeutic and allowed me to heal during Covid amid the unrest we were experiencing as a country. I did get married during that summer and I was also able to share that joy in my writing. The DWP is now an important part of my process as a thinker and a writer and I am proud of my affiliation. Your writing/teaching writing.

Tip: Brain vomit!! Write all of your thoughts down. Then go back and analyze. Some of your best work will come from spontaneous thought!" ~Dr. K Orange Jones, DrewTeach https://nwp.org/50

"One of my fondest memories of my first Summer Institute was when I received a note from a fellow participant that asked, 'When did you realize that you became a writer?' I guess I never thought of myself that way. But in both Summer Institutes that I attended, I felt a sense of creativity, connection, camaraderie, and a renewed sense of confidence. Not only in my teaching and writing, but in myself too. It’s a place to grow and share." ~Erica Yamafang, San Diego Area Writing Project https://nwp.org/50

"The National Writing Project has been a transformative influence in my life as a writing teacher. I had long attended NWP conferences before the year I was able to participate in the Summer Institute. That summer I reconnected with my writer self in a profound way that helped me to understand how essential it is for a teacher of writing to write herself. Reconnecting with the creative writer in myself was important to me not only for its restorative qualities, but because the institute provided a model for a writing community that I have used in my middle and high school classrooms ever since. Just as importantly, the research I started that summer grew into an action research project for my M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction. The project, which was centered on teaching argumentative writing to eighth graders, taught me a lot about teaching argument and won a Northeastern Educator Research Award, which in turn led to an invitation to contribute a chapter to a college text book on teacher leadership in literacy. That practice in research and writing also stood me in good stead as I researched and wrote my doctoral dissertation for a DLitt in Literary Studies at Drew University. At the same time, the opportunity to serve as a Teacher Consultant for NWP has been very rewarding.

Tip: I believe that teaching students to write is about helping them find their voices by granting them as much agency as possible. For instance, I like to approach creative writing by focusing on a skill (for instance, using metaphors and similes in description of place) and allowing students to choose their own genres and scenes to practice that skill. When they have the freedom to express themselves in their own way, they produce amazing work!" ~Kate Zimmerbaum, DrewTeach https://nwp.org/50
