✨ Online Training Announcement ✨
Disability Justice: Confronting Ableism for Child Welfare Professionals
With Lyssa Ichikawa & Soerny Cruz
Friday, July 12th | 9:15am-1:15pm
Online waiting room opens at 9:00am; training starts at 9:15am.
4 CE Credits | No Fee

With July being Disability Pride month, we focus this course on understanding the ways we have internalized ableism in our daily lives. Sayings like, “That’s so dumb!” or “Your words are falling on deaf ears” that were seemingly “harmless” land a lot differently today. Cultural shifts in our awareness along with the phenomenon of social media allows people to access diverse perspectives, connect with non-school related learning opportunities, and make connections instantly through time and space.

In this workshop, we will examine how ableism has existed and evolved and learn from the work of disabled people who are disability justice advocates. We will spend time in dialogue exploring terminology, shared language, definitions, and identifying the ways that the Social Model of Disability can help us in our work to break cycles of harm and center care and healing.

Our SF Mental Health Program team (Supervisors, Therapists, and Intensive Care Coordinators) recently participated in a 2-part training with Tonia Herrero from East Bay Art Therapy (Instagram: ). The team learned about basics of art therapy theory, how to use art for clinical self-care, and a few art-based interventions. It was an experiential training so they got to make art too!

A Better Way is closed today as we join the nation in celebrating this important day of freedom and reflection. Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and serves as a reminder of the ongoing pursuit of equality and justice. We will resume our regular operations tomorrow. Thank you for your understanding and support.

Anne Grascoeur, our Chief People Officer, picked up 10 bicycles & helmets today that were generously donated by Cooley LLP, a gift that was coordinated by Foster Love! The children served by A Better Way are always in need of bicycles. 🚴 It's so good for them to play outside and get some exercise, away from screens. Opinion: California’s budget is in freefall. Who will bail out the babies? 05/16/2024

According to the National Diaper Bank Network, “diaper need” is the lack of a sufficient supply of diapers to keep a baby clean and dry. Nearly 50,000 Bay Area babies and over 375,000 babies statewide live in households struggling to meet basic needs.

Opinion: California’s budget is in freefall. Who will bail out the babies? Continued funding for state’s diaper bank is essential to help families who struggle to meet basic needs.

Our Story

A Better Way Inc was founded in 1996 as a Foster Family Program. Since then, we have grown into a comprehensive foster and adoption services agency, providing adoption, community training, parent advocacy, and behavioral health services to children and families at risk or involved with the foster care system. The mission of A Better Way is to empower children and families to develop the insights, life skills, and permanent relationships that promote their social, emotional, educational and economic well-being.

Since 1996, A Better Way has provided foster care placements to more than 2,000 children and has finalized 300 adoptions. We are the one of the few organizations in San Francisco and Alameda counties with expertise in assessing and providing behavioral health services to children 0-5 involved in the social services system through pre- or post-adoption, outpatient mental health, and reunification services.

A Better Way has provided behavioral health services to close to 2,500 children, many of whom live in our communities’ most impoverished and violence-ridden neighborhoods. In addition to behavioral health services, we provide intensive support and case management for parents pursuing reunification through our Parent Engagement Program with the help of parents who have successfully navigated the reunification process.

As a training center for foster parents and service providers, A Better Way provides about 2,000 hours of training per year in Alameda and Solano Counties – primarily through Title IV-E Training contracts with Chabot-Las Positas Community College. We coordinate and provide comprehensive training on an array of topics to professionals from other agencies, A Better Way staff, County personnel, and foster and birth parents.
