Happy Indigenous People’s Day!

About 30 Mayan languages are still spoken by indigenous peoples in southern Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize (UNESCO).

Guatemala has a population of over 15 million people, nearly half of whom self-identify as indigenous. Unfortunately, these communities are the most underserved and have high rate of poverty and malnutrition (USAID).

We are happy to serve and provide care for all who come to our Regional Medical Center and La Familia Eye Center in Nuevo Progreso!

One year old Atalia captured the hearts of our Plastics/OR team upon her arrival, her mother Sonia brought her into our Hospital for a cleft lip repair. From pre-op, surgery, to post op she received the best care available! Her story is one of many children in Nuevo Progreso, Guatemala and its surrounding communities; we are happy to provide these much needed surgeries to all who make the trip to visit. It is through donations and special events, like our upcoming Fundraiser, that help us make such a positive impact in their lives. We hope you can join us on Thursday September 28th!

These women embody teamwork and strong work ethic, they are always smiling and looking for ways to help.

When our medical teams arrive at Nuevo Progreso, they are part of the welcoming party and make sure that we have everything we need. From surgery materials and scrubs, to sheets and personal laundry.

We are very grateful to have our Laundry team at Hospital de la Familia! Juntos adelante! Together we move forward!

Team Siegler Day 5:

What a day! We had an amazing turn out for our Mother and Baby Education class. At the end of it, we gave them prenatal books and donations (toys, clothes, and shoes).

Afterward, we walked over to thank the Laundry ladies for taking such great care of us and washing our clothes daily during our trips.

Dr. Bill McClure (with help) organized a “Ladies Night” dinner where he pampered the ladies with guacamole, salsa, and margaritas while our traveling Troubadour serenaded us!

This was a lovely end to a long day in hospital, clinics, and the OR’s.

¡Juntos Adelante! Together we move forward!

Team Siegler Day 4! On this day we took a morning stroll to the old cemetery and tried very hard not to slip on the mud.

Here you see pictures from the Eye Clinic, the sewing school, general surgery, plastic surgery, and the town of Nuevo Progreso in its natural element. Together, we move forward! ¡Juntos Adelante!

Team Siegler day 3: Our morning walk included some much needed incline since the wonderful kitchen ladies have been feeding us so well!

We had the opportunity to visit a local Elementary school and administer Eye Screenings to 100+ children and adults. We brought along sunglasses to give away and set up appointments at our Eye Clinic for those who need prescription glasses.

A special thank you to all who donated sunglasses, writing & coloring materials, erasers, sharpeners, and toys for the students.

Team Siegler day 2 ✌🏽Every morning we go on a walk at 6 AM, then breakfast at 7, and straight to work! We work in the eye clinic, perform surgeries (general, gyn, plastic, eye), and teach/train as we go.

We got to meet the newly elected Mayor of Nuevo Progreso, visit and speak to our Nursing School class, and dyed our Musician’s hair!

Little Sandra Susanna was delivered at HdlF during Team Arlene Cosca's visit in April!
Dr. Sandra Torrente delivered and CRNA Susan Bennett administered the much-needed epidural. Mom was so grateful she named the baby after them! At HdlF Maternal Health is a priority and with our newly acquired ultrasound, we can help provide care for women during their pregnancy.

A big part of how our doctors and nurses contribute to the Hospital de la Familia is, training. We strive to teach local doctors, nurses, and staff the skills needed to thrive. Here, you see us teaching the local team how to use an Ultrasound Machine on themselves.

Last month the local staff at Hospital de la Familia had an employee celebration day with games and all kinds of fun! We want to celebrate them and all of their efforts in providing quality healthcare to Nuevo Progreso on a daily basis!

HdlF visiting teams bring more than just medical care to the community of Nuevo Progreso! Team Arlene Cosca just returned and in addition to performing 42 surgeries, they hosted a girls' soccer camp! Over 250 girls showed up, and with US and Guatemalan coaches, not only did they have a ton of fun, each girl walked away with their own jersey.
