We want to give a warm welcome to Selam who has joined CE3 as a Masters of Social Welfare Intern for the Independent Student Program cluster!
Read her bio below: ⬇️
Selam Haile (She/hers). I am a Master of Social Welfare (MSW) intern with the Independent Student Programs (ISP) at CE3. My specialization in the MSW focuses on policy advocacy, community organizing, outreach, and program implementation and evaluation. This year with my internship, I am supporting ISP programs with collaboration in outreach, program implementation, and evaluation.
I was born and raised in Eritrea ( a small country in East Africa). I left my home and family behind and immigrated to the states in 2012. I am a first-generation, Re-entry, and student parent. I live in Oakland with my family- a wife and mother to two boys.
I am also a double bear; I graduated in 2021 with B.A. in Sociology and Human rights from UC Berkeley. I am in my second year in the Masters of Social Welfare program at Cal, specializing in Strengthening Organizations and Communities (SOC). I also attended community college in the Bay Area. Most of my work has been with marginalized communities, addressing equity and access to education, working with youth, and women empowerment. I have been with the student-parent center as a student staff since 2019. It is a privilege to be working with the ISP programs. I am inspired by our students, their resilience and accomplishments, as well as ISP programs on their commitment in embodying equity, inclusiveness, and above all, belonging in all the work they do.

Hi, I am Julio Gomez, Anthropology and Native American Studies major, Berkeley class of 2022. I am from Oakland, California, and now live in San Pablo, California. My return to college began at Contra Costa Community College in 2017, 17 years after I graduated from high school. Currently, I am a Peer Advising Specialist serving Berkeley’s Re-entry student population. I aspire to continue my education in an Indigenous studies graduate program. Outside of academia I do tons of walking in the East Bay Regional Parks system and, when I can, Point Reyes National Seashore and Half Moon Bay. I have an amateur interest in ecology, and always bring my binoculars on my walks for birding.
