Buenos dias and so sad 😥 announce that on Thursday night 3/28, I lost my amazing lifetime mentors who guided me and my entire familia on our path to an education. He was my Spanish teacher, then became a Vice Principal to Sequoia High and then became the Director of Adult School in Redwood City - he is a testament of what teaching and learning is all about - rooted in love and social justice❤️. I have so many memories with him creating community, coming to my graduations, and empowering us to be the future leaders. And he always have a great sense of humor, amazing energy and words of encouragement for any occiasion. I will miss my platicias with him and amazing advice. Below are some pictures from high school that were shared with me.
My familia sends his familia our condolences and we thank them for sharing such an amazing man and human being who impacted so many of us in Redwood City and the Bay Area
- Mr. Roberto Martinez - Esta Presente! 💜✊
Buenos dias and last night Berkeley Community College hosted our Berkeley Cesar E. Chavez, Dolores Huerta and Larry Itliong Commemoration Celebration- Environmental Justice Starts with Us. Started with showing the Maria Moreno film Adios Amor and opened ceremonia with Berkeley's danzantes - Cuauhtli Mitotiani Mexica coordinated by Ms. Betti then moved to our speakers - Dr. Denise Richardson, BCC President; Ana Vasudeo, BUSD Latina Board President; Jill Hoogendyk, Associate Superintendent; and Alexis Bernal, PhD student in ESPM at UC Berkeley. And we closed by celebrating 11 individuals from Berkeley who have gone above and beyond to help others and are grounded in the values non-violence, social justice and making a difference in our daily practices of love and compassion.
Special shout outs to: Lisette Flores for hosting us at BCC; Jose Martinez for the altars and the Marimba musica that came to the central valley. Gracias y seguimos Pa'delante!
Buenos dias and sharing pictures from our UCB Uplifting Latinas and Allies gathering that took place Wednesday,
April 20th celebrating Womxn's Hxstory month at the new Latinx Student Resource Center.
We honored and celebrated - Lillian Castillo-Speed, Ethnic Studies head librarian; Lisa S Hirai Tsuchitani - Asian American Studies faculty; Diana Lizarraga, Director of Cal NERDS and Maria Ramirez, performer and her storytelling.
Shared knowledge and intergenerational experiences as we broke bread and reflected on our responsibilities as educated individuals. And listened to Maira's performance reminding us of the herstory perspective in storytelling.
Gracias 🙏 and felicidades 🎉 to all our honorees for their fierce dedication and commitment to our students and communities.
