🌟For , we’re honoring civil rights activist Yuri Kochiyama (1921-2014).

Kochiyama advocated for the rights of others while standing in solidarity with those facing injustice. Growing up in California, Kochiyama spent years in an internment camp and later pushed for federal legislation for reparations to internment camp survivors. During her life she supported multiple social justice causes, from Puerto Ricans fighting for independence to African Americans fighting for civil rights.

This well-recognized photograph by Corky Lee shows Kochiyama participating in a restaurant workers protest organized by the Chinese Staff and Workers Association in 1980 in New York City’s Chinatown. The staff eventually won their fight and were rehired.

A warm Berkeley Buddhist Temple welcome to new member Juliet Bost Yokoe (they/them/theirs)! Juliet, shown with Rev. Kiyonobu Kuwahara on Sept. 24, is a Minister's Assistant, and has been helping out with the Sunday Dharma Family service. They are also a member of the San Mateo Buddhist Temple. In addition, Juliet won the Gold Medal in the National Collegiate Taekwondo Association Championships in April 2022.
