As much as social media has its negatives, there are some magical moments. Recently, we had two former patients that had facial reanimation surgeries recognize each other in public. Dr. Azizzadeh’s landmark new publication in describing his novel technique for individuals with Moebius syndrome to achieve a more natural and authentic smile. “This is the first study to identify intraoperative residual facial nerve activity accounting for movement in Moebius patients with bilateral paralysis,” state the investigators. In addition, “this is the first description of residual ipsilateral facial nerve powered gracili muscle in children with Moebius and bilateral paralysis leading to spontaneous, symmetric smile.” We are so excited about how this new technique can improve the lives of children and adults with Moebius syndrome. We are investigating the relationship between synkinesis and neck pain, and are looking for adults ages 18-88 who have been diagnosed with synkinesis. This lovely patient developed two severe episodes of Bell’s palsy that affected both sides of her face. She, unfortunately, did not regain full function and was left with severe synkinesis. Her life was transformed after undergoing the novel facial reanimation procedure by Dr. Azizzadeh. This procedure corrected bilateral facial paralysis and synkinesis. The results are a few months apart after undergoing surgery.
