In November 2008, Judge Shanta Owens was elected to the bench to serve as a District Judge in the criminal division for the 10th Judicial Circuit of Alabama. She is the presiding judge for the drug court program for the Birmingham Division of Jefferson County, a rehabilitation program for nonviolent drug offenders who want to live drug free lives.
Judge Shera Grant became a district court judge in January 2016. Prior to taking the bench, she practiced in a variety of areas. Immediately following law school, she practiced as a prosecutor with the City of Atlanta and the DeKalb County District Attorney's Office. Both of the Birmingham natives graduated from Alabama State University. Both graduated from law school at Louisiana State University. While Grant went to Atlanta after law school, Owens came back to Birmingham and both ended up with jobs as prosecutors.
Judge Owens and Judge Grant are 1995 Ramsay High School graduates. The sisters hold the distinction of being the first and only set of identical twins to serve simultaneously as state court judges in Jefferson County, Alabama.
