Ben Watson has battled through injuries to find success as a three-sport standout for Bismarck Legacy.
“Ben was playing defense in a varsity football when he tore his ACL, LCL, and his meniscus in two places. We sought the sports medicine expertise of Dr. Timothy Juelson at The Bone & Joint Center, and he performed successful surgery on Ben’s knee.
Over 11 months, Ben took his physical therapy very seriously and was cleared to return to sports. Ben had a positive attitude the entire year. He never complained about anything. He showed up for every practice and game during spring baseball, summer baseball, and fall football knowing that he wouldn't be able to compete with his friends. He showed up for his teammates and coaches.
As Ben’s parents, we admire his strength, kindness, and ability to never give up. We are so proud of his journey to recovery. Ben is currently back to playing baseball and hopes to play collegiately someday.”
Patty is pain-free and looking forward to an active summer fishing and spending time outdoors with her family.
“Dr. Derrick Cote has helped me through a shoulder replacement, two knee replacements, and a recent finger procedure. The staff at The Bone & Joint Center’s Dickinson location have always gone above and beyond and deserve a shoutout. I’m grateful for the great care I’ve received!”
We’re based in Bismarck, but our team believes in serving greater North Dakota.

From his first sports injury to a state championship, 12-year-old Coen trusted us with his care and made a remarkable recovery from a broken arm.
“Just one day before hockey tryouts, Coen broke his arm during a football game. Initially, we believed Coen had a straightforward break, but X-rays revealed additional damage to his elbow caused by a dislodged bone fragment.
It was a distressing revelation, especially for a young athlete facing his first major setback. Fortunately, Dr. Brock Norrie's reputation preceded him, and he was recommended to us by one of Coen's coaches.
Dr. Norrie's thoroughness and clear communication immediately put us at ease. Despite the complexity of Coen's injury, Dr. Norrie devised a comprehensive treatment plan, which included surgery. Throughout the entire process, he took the time to explain every aspect, ensuring we felt informed and confident in the path forward.
The day of surgery was understandably nerve-wracking for Coen, but the team at Bismarck Surgical Associates went above and beyond to make him feel comfortable. Their kid-friendly approach and constant updates kept us all reassured during what could have been an overwhelming experience.
Following surgery, Coen embarked on a rigorous 12-week rehabilitation journey. His determination to make a full recovery was unwavering, and Dr. Norrie's encouragement only fueled his motivation. When Coen received the green light to return to sports, his excitement level was through the roof.
Amazingly, Coen not only returned to the ice in time for the end of the hockey season, but he never skipped a beat. It was incredible to watch his team rally their way to a state title!
Thank you to the entire team at The Bone & Joint Center. We felt confident knowing Coen was in such capable and caring hands.”
Alvina, Kara, and Liz went above and beyond to accommodate a young, autistic patient who needed her cast removed.
Congratulations on being nominated for this month’s employee spotlight. Your effort, thought, and compassion are inspiring!
“The patient’s father was nervous about how the cast-removal process may disturb his autistic daughter. Kara, Alvina, and Liz worked together to find and borrow over-the-ear headphones to decrease the noise and distract the patient.
The cast was removed with very little reaction. The patient’s father was very impressed with how everything was handled. They did a fantastic job!”
When injuries happen, we’re here to turn setbacks into comebacks.
From the first pitch to the final sprint, athletes can trust our team to keep them 'feelin' good' and performing at their best this spring.
Her experience with Dr. Brock Norrie prompted Rhonda to leave a 5-star review.
We always appreciate feedback from our patients!
Now that Hanah’s healthy, she’s back to hunting with her dad!
“While playing volleyball my freshman year, I dove and dislocated my kneecap. I was told my season was over, and I needed to do physical therapy to heal. However, the next summer, the same injury happened again.
This time, I sought a second opinion and went to The Bone & Joint Center. After meeting with Dr. Timothy Juelson, it was determined my kneecap was sitting too high, and I needed patella alta reconstruction surgery.
Dr. Juelson was great at answering my questions. He is very personable and easy to talk to and truly cares about his patients. He asked me about my goals, and I told him I wanted to play volleyball again as a senior. I achieved that goal, but later that season, I fractured my tibia.
It was heartbreaking to get hurt again, but after having such a great experience with Dr. Juelson, I knew exactly who I wanted to go to for my care. I trusted him 100% and am now back to lifting weights and enjoying activities like hunting. I’m thankful to be on the mend and grateful for Dr. Juelson and The Bone & Joint Center.”
It’s one of our favorite times of the year! Good luck to our local athletes and teams competing at state, and congrats to those who have already competed.
We’re proud to support athletes at every level of competition. From injury to recovery, you can trust us to keep you 'feelin' good’ and in the game.
Shirley’s a mother of four, has been married 59 years, is turning 80 this year, and there’s no slowing her down! From her knee to her hip, we’re grateful that she’s trusted us in her times of need.
“I’ve been active my entire life. I grew up as a farm kid and then owned a production company, where I spent years setting up sound, lighting, and staging. All of this is very tough on the body.
Ten years ago, to celebrate my anniversary, my husband and I walked the Camino de Santiago. This is a 500-mile walk across Spain. I was already in significant misery with my left knee, but this trip was too important to miss.
When I returned stateside, I met with Dr. Joseph Carlson, whom I was well acquainted with. My husband was injured in Vietnam, and his leg was a constant source of pain. Dr. Carlson and Dr. Timothy Bopp were able to correct my husband’s injury, so I knew exactly who to see for my knee replacement. My surgery went flawlessly, and Dr. Carlson was amazing. He has magic hands!
About five years later, my hip was giving me major trouble and would give out on me. I saw Dr. Brian Dahl, whose father was my first physician at The Bone & Joint Center. The surgery went incredibly and within 10 days, I was back at work.
I’ll turn to The Bone & Joint Center later this month for hand surgery with Dr. Duncan Ackerman. I have been suffering from arthritis, and it’s time to take care of the constant pain.
Thank you to everyone at The Bone & Joint Center, you are simply the best. I’d also like to give a special shout-out to the physical therapy team. They are very precise, composed, and compassionate.”

Dr. Duncan Ackerman’s professionalism stood out to Perry and led to an excellent experience.
“From diagnosing the root issues and through the surgery, Dr. Ackerman was outstanding. Nicole Frank helped me through a couple of little issues too. I want to also thank Josh Gerrity for the PT to get my shoulder back into shape. Great people all around at The Bone & Joint Center.”
Six-year-old Addison injured her arm playing on the zip line during recess. Her mother says turning to us for her care made all the difference.
“When I picked Addison up from school, she was covered in wood chips, scared, and crying. However, our experience with The Bone & Joint Center provided the comfort she needed.
Everyone treated her with such care and actual heartfelt kindness. Both surgeries she had went very well. The first to put pins in and fix the great displacement was tough, but they explained everything in great detail. The communication was on point and made me and Addison feel like this awful accident would be okay.
Her recovery was long but good. After her second surgery to get the pins out, she did not even cry. Addison said she felt safe and loved. That made me cry! The staff was also amazing to Addison’s big sister, Abigail, who was with us for most of the appointments and surgeries.
We knew that healing meant taking it easy, which Addison did, but it was tough since she’s such an active child. Thanks to The Bone & Joint Center, she’s got the use of her arm back, and I am beyond thankful. Everyone there is truly amazing in every aspect. Without their care and expertise, I’m not sure if Addison would have gotten full functionality back in her arm.”
This silly seven-year-old (shorts make for a solid sweater apparently!) loves staying active, but a knee injury was tough on Rubie.
“Rubie was having trouble with her knees popping in and out of place, causing her pain and limiting her activity. Her primary care physician recommended we go to The Bone & Joint Center.
Rubie was nervous, but the entire team at The Bone & Joint Center made her feel comfortable, and she was immediately put at ease with her X-ray and MRI. The nurses were so kind, and the radiology specialist called her the #1 patient of the day!
After the MRI, we had an appointment with Dr. Timothy Juelson, and he helped us understand her condition. Rubie was diagnosed with Patellar Femoral Instability, which puts her at risk of her knees dislocating. Although it was news we didn’t want to hear, Dr. Juelson and his team helped us to understand her condition and gave us excellent direction on how to avoid future injury or damage.
Rubie was fitted for some amazing knee braces to wear for sports and activities and is seeing a physical therapist who was also great and taught her exercises to make her even stronger. The experience at The Bone & Joint Center was great. They made her comfortable, made our appointments convenient with the distance we had to travel, and gave Rubie the best care she could receive!
Rubie is now excited for her next appointment and no longer nervous or sad about her knees! She says, “My knees are strong!”

Devon had been active at a high level of performance in martial arts practice and competition for nearly his entire life. Add to that snow-sports hobbies, and you have a potent recipe for wear-and-tear. However, it was a car accident that did the most significant damage and eventually led to Devon having no cartilage in his knee.
“My ability to perform, stay in shape, teach martial arts, or even keep up (especially with young students) was suffering.
I saw Dr. Timothy Juelson at The Bone & Joint Center for clean-up and recovery after the initial accident. His conduct, professional and pragmatic, and his competency were a credit to him. A few years later, I eventually wore through the remaining cartilage in my knee, and I knew who to trust for counsel about recovery. I eventually opted to proceed with an allograft and alignment surgery.
Since that operation, I've been slowly rebuilding my strength and rediscovering how much I love to move and teach. As a martial arts instructor and coach, teaching and mentoring is the most meaningful and rewarding thing in my life. Though my competition days are over, the better able I am to move and perform at a high level allows me to teach and set the best example I can for my students. I'm grateful daily for the cartilage gift and the capable medical care that has allowed me to regain function and continue to teach to the best of my ability.
Recently, I was able to hit my full middle split again for the first time since 2019. While it feels like a small thing, as I have many students who can do this, the accomplishment is a milestone that feels good after losing so much strength and flexibility during recovery.
Keep doing great work, and thanks again.”

From fearing she’d never walk again to teaching gymnastics, Gail’s road to recovery has been remarkable.
“Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d be back on the mat teaching gymnastics!
A month before my 50th birthday, I was helping a friend with a home repair when I slipped off a second-story roof and landed on my feet.
I was life-flighted to the nearest trauma center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and found out my back was broken in four places, and both of my feet were completely shattered. I spent the next six months in a wheelchair, unable to stand or walk. Finally, I had two major procedures. After a long and extremely painful six months in physical therapy, I was still unable to walk. I was told only time would tell if I would ever get better and unfortunately, I stayed the same for a couple of years.
Then in 2016, I moved to Williston, North Dakota with my boyfriend. I saw a doctor who said I would be better off with a double amputation because my feet were beyond repair, and I would never walk without severe pain. I was devastated and determined to not lose my feet.
I went in search of a foot and ankle specialist and found Dr. Chad Carlson at The Bone & Joint Center. I sent him a copy of my X-rays, medical reports, and waited for a reply. Finally, I received the call that would change my life! Dr. Carlson's nurse said he reviewed my file and believed he could help me. Within a month of that call, I had my first surgery, and it would only get better from there!
Dr. Carlson literally saved my feet, and being able to walk is the greatest gift I could ever ask for. I never dreamed that one man's knowledge could give me back my life!”
After trusting us with her care, Allie was able to finish her high school volleyball career on the court and not on the bench!
“Allie was at volleyball camp in early June when she landed after a short hurdle and heard a pop in her foot. Having worked with Dr. Chad Carlson in the past, the decision was made to return to his care. After an examination, we got the news that this was a far more difficult break to heal than we originally thought.
Dr. Carlson took the time to discuss the injury and treatment options and allowed Allie the time she needed to process that her senior season was slipping away. She had some difficult decisions to make! After much discussion, surgery was scheduled for the following week. Instead of being out of volleyball for 4-6 weeks, Allie was facing a 12-16 week recovery after surgery.
The surgery went well, and again, Dr. Carlson took the time to listen and answer questions. He gave Allie a goal of mid-September to be “dominating the court.” Her care in Bismarck was fantastic, and she was discharged with this goal in mind.
Remarkably, Allie was able to return less than 12 weeks later and has not looked back. We are so thankful for Dr. Carlson and The Bone & Joint Center!”
We’re shining the spotlight on some special employees who were nominated by co-workers for going above-and-beyond.
Tiffany Mack shared why her teammate in Minot, Angie Stratton, deserves a shout-out for everything she does.
“Angie brings a warm, welcoming, and smiling face to our clinic every day. She takes amazing care of our patients and helps her teammates whenever is needed without hesitation. Angie makes working at The Bone & Joint Center a positive and enjoyable experience. She is the definition of the word “teammate” and helps in ways that go beyond her job description. Angie loves learning new things, even if she’ll never have to use it or do it. We are so grateful to have Angie as our teammate here at the Minot clinic.”
