HHFB Names 40th Annual Community Book Fair to Honor Bob Hammel

This year’s community book fair is getting a new name. Hoosier Hills Food Bank will host the “40th Anniversary Bob Hammel Community Book Fair” at the Monroe County Fairgrounds on October 17-22.

Hammel, a local sportswriting legend and sixteen-time Indiana Sportswriter of the Year, has been a long-time supporter of both HHFB and the Book Fair and this year’s event will feature his donation of over 2,500 items from his personal collection of books and memorabilia. An extensive collection of books covering many different sports including IU sports and the Olympics, Indiana history, US History, Journalism and other topics will be available for book fair guests to purchase along with items of memorabilia from Hammel’s long career.

“We are so honored that Bob has entrusted us with the responsibility of offering his amazing collection to the public. People will have a unique opportunity to claim a piece of Indiana sports history at this year’s book fair and to choose from an extensive collection of well-curated books on all sorts of topics, all while supporting the food bank,” said HHFB CEO Julio Alonso.

In a first, the 40th annual book fair will kick off with a preview reception to honor Hammel on the evening before it opens. A program begins at 6pm and former Herald-Times Editor Bob Zaltsberg will emcee the event, and speakers will include representatives from IU Athletics, local best-selling author Michael Koryta, Cook Group President Pete Yonkman, and Karen Knight, widow of Hammel’s long-time friend, Coach Bob Knight. The reception will also offer a glimpse at the many items that will be available for purchase at the book fair. There is a $20 suggested donation for the reception which will be applied to the Opening Day admission fee. Attendance will be limited, and no sales will be made.

"An honor like this in association with an annual community event I genuinely cherish frankly overwhelms me,” said Hammel. “I made it plain in several late-career columns how much I valued and treasured the rescue Julio and the Food Bank organization pulled off when the original Book Fair sponsors felt they had to pull out. Annually, I have left there with boxes full of bargain buys and then spent winter, spring and summer nights reading those treasures. My admiration at every Book Fair went beyond the sponsors to the staff of volunteer workers who always seemed to treasure the event as much as I did. Year after year, many of the same faces and always some new ones have been there, helping all of us. Much -- honestly, a figure maybe into four figures -- of my library donation is books returning 'home,' books in superb condition that I brought home from previous Book Fairs. This chance to give back, in support of so noble and needed a cause, is the only way parting with such a prized collection could be so regret-free."

Gold Level Book Fair Sponsors include the Monroe County Fairgrounds, Bloomington, In, Kroger, Boston Scientific and Catalent; Corporate Level Sponsors are Southside Rental, Hoosier Energy, Lamar Advertising Company, One World Enterprises, Republic Services, Morgenstern Books & Café, Finney Hospitality Group, Fast Signs and Strauser Construction. Other sponsors are Kritzer Insurance, Monday Morning Book Sorters, Kathy Anderson & Howard Rosenbaum, Monroe Fire Protection District, The Chocolate Moose, and Bill C. Brown Associates.

There’s still time to get involved for Hunger Action Month (HAM)!

During the first two weeks of HAM we had dozens of volunteers come in completing over 100 hours of volunteer work (including a volunteer day by Vector Solutions), the Raydia Food Group hosted a food drive on Hunger Action Day, Weddle Bros ran a golf outing benefit, September was declared Hunger Action Month for Monroe County, and the Courthouse turn orange all last week.

Even with those amazing activities we still have multiple which only got started and still to come! The Grassroots food drive by W**d Man and Mosquito Hero started and will run until October 18th, JayC’s and Rulers are also collecting breakfast foods like cereal and granola bars for the month, and our friends at the YMCA and Morgenstern’s Books are continuing their ongoing food drives. Additionally, over the next two weeks we’re having volunteer groups from Cook, IU Health, Deloitte, and Duke Energy. You can also donate by rounding up at checkout when shopping at Kroger or Fresh Thyme this month!

If you want to get involved in Hunger Action Month by volunteering yourself or with your company contact Ryan at [email protected] and if you’re interested in running a food or fund drive benefiting HHFB contact Mike at [email protected].

If you’d like to donate to support HHFB and the fight against hunger you can send it by mail to PO Box 697, Bloomington IN, 47402 or online at PayPal: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=E2B2K78ED85EC&source=url

It may be Friday the 13th but it isn’t as spooky as last year.

Last year Friday the 13th landed in the middle of our Food Bank Book Fair and during a time that we were struggling to get enough food for our agencies. By the end of 2023 we finished the year with over 300,000 pounds of food distributed less than 2022. However we were able to make the 2023 Book Fair the most successful it has ever been. This year we’ve been working to turn that around and so far we’ve distributed over 130,000 pounds more food than we had this time last year. Similarly we’re planning to have an even bigger and better Book Fair this year for its 40th anniversary!

This wouldn’t be possible without the hard work of our staff/volunteers and our amazing donors. Even though Friday the 13th often brings thoughts of scary movies and haunted houses this year we at HHFB are only thinking about how we can continue to improve and assist more neighbors in our community. Thank you for your continued and vital support!

Want to get involved by advocating?

Every action counts in the fight against hunger. If you don’t have the ability to donate or volunteer you can share information about food insecurity or tell your representatives to support strong Farm Bills. The Farm Bill is an essential support for neighbors experiencing hunger and food banks alike. The SNAP, TEFAP, and CSFP programs are vital and essential programs enabled by the Farm Bill which support HHFB and our neighbors.

SNAP is the most effective anti-hunger program in the US. According to the USDA in 2023 an average of 42.1 million people participated in SNAP each month. There are also many other benefits to the SNAP program for participants and the economy. SNAP promotes long-term health and well-being by saving adult participants an average of $1,400 per year in health care costs and for every $1 of SNAP benefits awarded there’s an estimated $1.50 in economic activity. We were able to enable 136 SNAP applications bringing an estimated 70,500 meals to our neighbors in 2023.

In 2023 HHFB also received almost 20% from the TEFAP program and 5.25% from the CSFP Senior Box program. This food is vital to keeping our partners and our food pantries stocked and there are no other programs which can match their support of the charitable food sector.

Contact your representative today and ask them to pass a strong Farm Bill which will support our communities and neighbors!

Why is Hunger Action Month so important?

Last week the USDA released its annual Household Food Security in the US report for 2023. This continues a trend of significant increases in the number of individuals suffering from food insecurity from 44 million in 2022 and now 47 million neighbors in 2023. That increase means 1 in 7 Americans, including 1 in 5 children, experience food insecurity in the wealthiest nation in the world.

According to Feeding America's Map the Meal Gap, our communities in the HHFB service area have a 14.9% food insecurity rate (1 in 7 ), including 16.8% children (1 in 6). This puts our service area more than 2% over the national food insecurity rate of 12.8% (1 in 8). While that’s daunting we aren’t afraid and aren’t going to stop. HHFB CEO Julio Alonso always says “Not one Child. Not one Senior. Not one in between. Hunger is NOT an option.” We take that seriously and work to bring food to all of our neighbors.

Our partners and HHFB distributed over 5,250,000 million pounds of food and served an average of 64,000 individuals each month in 2023. Almost 17% of the food we distributed was food we purchased ourselves with support from grants and people like you. Community support is vital for us to assist the increasing number of neighbors fighting hunger and experiencing food insecurity.

Earlier today we talked about the amazing work our staff is doing in the fight against hunger. Now it’s time to see how well you know your food bank!

Our distributions are run by:
Sydney Graham, our Senior Programs Outreach Coordinator, runs our Senior Food Box distributions and served an average of 672 seniors per month in 2023.
Cory Lamping, our Programs and Garden Manager, runs our Mobile Pantries which served an average of 408 households and 901 individuals each month in 2023.
Erin Hollinden, our Manager of Agency Partnerships and Service Equity, and Cory Lamping run our neighborhood Mobile Pantries which served an average of 188 households and 469 individuals per month in 2023.

Our delivery route drivers and distribution amounts from 2023 are:
Mya Freed our Programs Specialist runs the Meal Share and GROW routes. She delivered over 51,000 and 53,000 pounds of food on each of these routes respectively in 2023.
Sydney Graham, our Senior Program Outreach Coordinator, delivers about 60 produce boxes to two Area 10 locations every other week.
Brad Williams, one of our Food Rescue Drivers, runs our Rural Route collecting food from four retail stores outside Monroe County. He rescued over 292,000 pounds of food and delivered part of it to three agencies, but most of it is brought back to be distributed on our Rural Delivery Route.
Dan Borders, one of our Food Rescue Drivers, runs our Local “Morning” Route collecting food from 14 different retail donors in Bloomington and delivers it directly to 7 different partner agencies. In 2023 this route collected and distributed over 410,000 pounds of food.
Dave Ruszkowski, our Food Delivery Specialist, runs the Rural Delivery Route, our largest daily route which logged over 19,500 miles driven last year. This food is staged at HHFB by our staff and volunteers twice a week and delivered 956,000 pounds of food in 2023.

Today is National Food Bank Day! How well do you know the Hoosier Hills Food Bank?

Many people don’t know the difference between a Food Bank and a Food Pantry. Both Food Banks and Food Pantries collect food from a wide variety of sources and try to get it distributed to those who need it. However Food Banks make collecting and distributing food to other organizations their main priority while Food Pantries only focus on distributing food to neighbors.

Most Food Banks also run Food Pantries and/or Mobile Pantries to help cover areas with less resources. For example, the Hoosier Hills Food Bank runs 4 monthly Families First Mobile Food Pantries, 3 monthly Neighborhood Pantries, and 14 CSFP Senior Food Box distribution sites.

Do you know who runs our distributions?:
Families First Mobile Pantries,
Neighborhood Mobile Pantries,
CSFP Senior Food Box.

However the majority of the more than 5 million pounds of food we distribute annually goes to our over 90 partner agencies. We distribute this food through agency pickups and deliveries. The pickups and deliveries are helped by our amazing staging volunteers who come in twice a week to stage around 40 pallets of food our partners order through our website. Our deliveries are how 80% of our food is distributed and where many of our staff’s work shines through. Delivery routes include Meal Share, the Garden Route On Wheels (GROW), Senior Produce Box Deliveries, our Rural Route, Local ‘Morning’ Route, and Rural Delivery Route.

Do you know who runs these routes?:
Meal Share and GROW,
Area 10 Senior Produce Box,
Rural Route,
Local “Morning” Route,
Rural Delivery Route.

All of this amazing work requires a lot of logistics and fleet management. Fortunately we have Casey Steury, Director of Operations & Chief Operating Officer, Donn Middleton, Safety and Operations Manager, and Matt Johnson, Logistics and Operations Specialist, oversee our nine vehicles, two forklifts, eight electric jacks, and two buildings comprising over 20,000 square feet.

Last but certainly not least enabling all of this amazing work is our Executive Director Julio Alonso and Associate Director Jake Bruner. They bring everyone together and keep the big picture of how we can continue working to end hunger in the long run while most of our team focuses on helping our neighbors today.

Come back this afternoon to learn the answers and more about Hoosier Hills Food Bank!

It’s Hunger Action Month! How are you planning to get involved?

Every September communities and individuals come together to support the fight against hunger across the nation. This year Hoosier Hills Food Bank and Feeding America are encouraging 1 million actions across the country! There are already a multitude of people and organizations that have planned events to support HHFB during Hunger Action Month!

September has been declared Hunger Action Month in Monroe County and the Courthouse is hosting a food drive on the rotunda all month as well as turning Orange, the official color of hunger awareness, for the week of September 9th which includes Hunger Action Day on September 10th!

We also have volunteer days scheduled at HHFB with Vector Solutions and Alpha Gamma Delta on September 10th Hunger Action Day, IU Health is coming out all day on September 18th, Deloitte on September 20th, Duke Energy on September 26th, and our friends from Cook are coming out on 3 Wednesdays!

Weddle Bros. will also be hosting a golf outing event to benefit HHFB with their staff, the proceeds from the Live from Bloomington Album release this month will go to support HHFB, and Kroger customers can round up at the register to benefit HHFB and Feeding America.

Finally, we have multiple food drives happening through September with JayC Foods in Bedford, Shoals, and West Baden Springs collecting breakfast items from September 1st - 28th, W**d Man from September 3rd - 18th, Alexandra’s Army, and both Monroe County YMCA locations and Morgenstern’s Books & Cafe host food drive barrels year round! Donations can also be dropped off at HHFB between 9:30 AM and 4:30 PM Monday through Friday.

Research done by the National Institute of Health, NIH, shows that food insecurity leads to students having a harder time in school and less academic success. Additionally, studies done by the USDA show that poor nutrition accounts for 85% of healthcare spending because of diet related chronic disease. Fortunately, USDA research has found that SNAP participation can reduce a household's medical expenses by up to $1,400 a year and every $1 spent on WIC may save up to $2.50 on medical, educational, and productivity costs. Not everyone qualifies for these indispensable programs and that’s where Food Banks like HHFB come in.

According to Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap our communities in the HHFB service area have a food insecurity rate of 14.9% or 1 in 7, including 16.8% or 1 in 6 children. Statewide in Indiana 1 in 7 Hoosiers and 1 in 5 children are food insecure. Hoosier Hills Food Bank with the help of our almost 100 partners distributed over 5.25 million pounds of food in 2023, the equivalent of over 4.3 million meals. This food goes to support everyone in our local communities from young kids to senior citizens and everyone in between. This is made possible with support from our community members, community partners, and amazing volunteers.

Hunger is a challenge we can overcome whether you donate, advocate, volunteer, or spread the word online every action makes a difference. Thank you for being a part of the movement to end hunger!
