The 15 Annual Jean Sinor Memorial Lecture, titled “Seeking Connections in Challenging Times: Music in an Interdisciplinary Curriculum,” will be presented by Dr. Janet Revell Barrett tonight; Tuesday, March 21st @ 6:30pm in M242 in the Simon Music Building.

We are thrilled to be hosting Dr. Barrett for the 2023 Jean Sinor Lecture in Music Education this week. Dr. Barrett’s full bio, Teaching Philosophy, and other information can be found here: https://music.illinois.edu/people/profiles/janet-revell-barrett/

Dr. Barrett has provided the following abstract for the lecture:

“Seeking Connections in Challenging Times: Music in an Interdisciplinary Curriculum”
Music connects the lives of students, teachers, and school communities in many ways. Music is also integrally related to other art forms, history, culture, and other subjects commonly taught in schools. These relationships deserve critical attention, particularly as music educators seek to reorient their curricula and pedagogy toward the pressing aims of social justice. Music’s situatedness in time and place, and the way it moves through eras and social contexts, implicates its close ties to history, an area of study seemingly fraught with peril in current controversies that question the scope and content of historical knowledge. I will describe two cases of practice that illustrate how music teachers integrated musical experiences with students’ historical inquiry in meaningful projects, deepening their complementary understandings. These cases, informed by the teachers’ curricular imagination and critical thought, underscore the value of an interdisciplinary perspective for music teacher education and professional development.
