Florida Atlantic Foundation Raises $70 Million in 2024 Fiscal Year - FAU Foundation, Inc. 07/23/2024

The Florida Atlantic University Foundation, Inc. raised over $70 million from more than 11,121 donors during the 2024 fiscal year – the second largest amount raised in the University’s history. This total is only exceeded by the 2022 fiscal year which raised more than $81.24 Million.

As a result of this generosity, Transcend Tomorrow: The Campaign for Florida Atlantic University reached a pivotal milestone during the 2024 fiscal year, achieving over a half billion dollars and placing the University at more than 80% of its $600 million goal.

In 2010, Yash Bhagwanji, Ph.D., associate professor in the College of Education, launched an early childhood education special topics course. After achieving resounding success and philanthropic support from the George B. Storer Foundation, Dr. Bhagwanji has built the College’s Early Childhood Environmental Education (ECEE) program that offers a specialization for students, as well as the nation’s first ECEE certificate program.

In 2004, Dr. Liehr joined the college as a professor and the first associate dean for nursing research and scholarship. She was awarded emerita professor status upon retiring in 2020. Florida Atlantic University has received $1.6 million from the Glenn W. Bailey Foundation to extend its Marine SEA (Science, Education, and Arts) Scholars Program within the FAU Charles E. Schmidt College of Science’s Marine Science Laboratory.

Housed in the Gumbo Limbo Environmental Complex in Boca Raton, the program provides financial assistance to students who demonstrate academic excellence and a commitment to become ambassadors of community outreach focused on FAU Marine Science Lab studies, discoveries and activities. The initial gift to establish this was received in 2020, and this latest gift will extend the program for five more years.

Florida Atlantic University’s Broward campuses received a $200,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Broward for the Bachelor of Professional Studies program, aiming to support Broward residents in completing their degree programs. The grant will fund the “Crossing the Stage” pilot project, providing personalized advising and tailored pathways for students to complete their bachelor’s degree, and addressing student challenges, such as time and financial constraints.

Ben and Liz Waldshan have established the David Waldshan Educational Endowment Fund at Florida Atlantic University to expand education and deepen knowledge of the Holocaust and human rights. The fund will provide professional learning opportunities to educators in south Florida to combat prejudice, hatred, and indifference. The gift was made in memory of Ben Waldshan’s father, David Waldshan, a Holocaust survivor.

FAU Foundation Board Welcomes New Members - FAU Foundation, Inc. 06/19/2024

Florida Atlantic University’s Foundation Board of Directors welcomed Bruce Allen ’71, Gary Rubin and Marilyn Wallach to its board. The new board members were recently approved by the FAU Board of Trustees. Each will serve a three-year term beginning July 1.

Allen received his bachelor’s degree in political science from FAU in 1971. He was a prior member and past chair of the foundation board, as well as president of the FAU Alumni Association for three terms. Allen’s wife, Carolyn, is also an alumna. They both are longstanding financial supporters of the university and reside in North Carolina.

Rubin, along with his wife, Robin, and her parents, Phyllis and Harvey Sandler, have generously supported FAU, naming The Harvey and Phyllis Sandler School of Social Work and contributed to the funding the Schmidt Family Complex for Academic and Athletic Excellence. He is the co-founder of Masters Research Partners, LLC and resides in Boca Raton.

Wallach and her husband, Kurt, established the Kurt and Marilyn Wallach Institute for Holocaust and Jewish Studies within the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters. She resides in Vero Beach.

FAU Foundation Board Welcomes New Members - FAU Foundation, Inc. Florida Atlantic University has raised more than $1.2 million in support of scholarships and student success at its recent 2024 President’s Gala. The signature event at the Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena on FAU’s Boca Raton campus was at capacity, attended by more than 600 friends of the university.

Join us in honoring the remarkable career and extraordinary life and legacy of Dr. M. Dennis Hanisak. For over 30 years, Dr. Hanisak mentored aspiring young scientists, opening minds to the wonders of the marine environment, and preparing students to become career professionals at the FAU Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute. In 2002, Dr. Hanisak founded one of the nation’s premier marine science education programs, Semester By The Sea. This program provides unique, hands-on experiences to undergraduate students in the classroom, in the field, and even at sea. Learning directly from subject experts, this program has educated over 500 students, many of which pursued careers in marine science.

FAU Football will play at least five nationally televised games in 2024 for their second season under Hagerty Family Head Football Coach Tom Herman. Several game times and TV designations have been announced, including a Nov. 1 Homecoming matchup with in-state conference rival University of South Florida, and the home opener on Sept. 7 facing Army.

FAU Awarded Grant to Examine Role of Pet Dogs on Military Adolescents 05/23/2024

The FAU Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing received a new grant from the Human Animal Bond Research Institute to investigate the connection between dog ownership and the well-being of adolescent children of military families. With stressors such as parental deployment and frequent relocations, dog ownership may help promote positive mental health outcomes. This research could help shape future policies for children in these unique circumstances.

FAU Researchers Land $1M in FDOH Grants to Fight Alzheimer’s Disease 05/17/2024

Three Florida Atlantic researchers at the forefront of Alzheimer’s disease research have each received a $350,000 grant from the Florida Department of Health to investigate the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, care management and cure for Alzheimer’s disease. Congratulations to Drs. Mare Cudic, Ruth Tappen, and Qi Zhang for receiving this grant to enhance their pivotal research.

The FAU Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute has been awarded a $1.3 million grant by the Florida Department of Emergency Management to explore the feasibility of in-water harvesting of Sargassum, a type of seaweed. This approach aims to clean up the seaweed before it reaches the shores, potentially offering a more efficient solution to the problem of seaweed accumulation on Florida's beaches.
