Functional training in physical therapy mimics sports movements through exercises designed to improve the specific skills required for a sport, such as agility, power, and speed.
By replicating these sport-specific movements, functional training ensures that improvements in strength and coordination translate directly to better performance on the field or court.
This approach not only boosts athletic performance but also helps prevent injuries by ensuring your body is well-prepared for the demands of your sport.
Understanding the source of pelvic, hip, or low back pain can be a complex process, requiring expert diagnosis and treatment to help decipher and address the underlying issues, often revealing that what seems like a hip or back problem could actually be related to pelvic floor dysfunction.

Through personalized training, physical therapists help athletes perform at their best while reducing the likelihood of injuries.
A Physical Therapist analyzes your movement patterns to identify and correct imbalances or weaknesses, which can lead to injuries if left unaddressed. A PT training program focuses on strengthening the muscles and joints most used in your sport, improving endurance and enhancing coordination.

Physical therapists use various modalities to enhance treatment and speed up recovery.
-Heat therapy increases blood flow, relaxes muscles, and reduces stiffness, making it easier to perform exercises and activities.
-Cold therapy helps reduce inflammation, swelling, and pain by constricting blood vessels and numbing affected areas.
-Electrical stimulation can enhance muscle strength, promote healing, and relieve pain by stimulating nerve endings.
These techniques, alongside targeted exercises, help accelerate recovery, improve mobility, and enhance overall treatment outcomes.
How Do Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine Complement Each Other?
Physical therapy and sports medicine are two disciplines that, when combined, offer a holistic approach to the treatment and management of sports injuries. Physical therapy focuses on the treatment of injuries through methods such as manual therapy, therapeutic exercises, and modalities to reduce pain and promote healing. Sports medicine, on the other hand, extends beyond injury treatment to include performance enhancement, nutrition, and injury prevention strategies.

Just like hitting the gym for your other muscles, your pelvic floor needs regular exercise to stay strong and functional! For men and women of all ages, consistent pelvic floor workouts can help with bladder control, improve core stability, improve sexual function, and enhance overall well-being.
It’s never too late or too early to start exercising these muscles, and just like deadlifts and bench presses, there is a safe and effective way to train your pelvic floor. A physical therapist certified in pelvic floor health can create individualized training plans, helping you strengthen, maintain, and prevent future pelvic floor issues.
Physical therapy is not just about treating injuries—it’s about empowering you to take control of your own health and well-being. We prioritize education and prevention to help our clients achieve short-term relief and long-term results, and it’s these experiences that confirm that we’re on the right path toward redefining healthcare and rehabilitation.

Physical Therapists are there for you, no matter the issue.
For sports injuries, PTs provide tailored rehabilitation programs to restore function, prevent re-injury, and ensure a safe return to sports.
In neurological disorders like stroke or Parkinson’s disease, PTs use specific exercises to improve mobility, balance, and coordination, helping patients regain independence.
By addressing each individual's unique needs, physical therapists play a crucial role in restoring function and improving the quality of life for a diverse patient population.
"Individuals seeking relief from muscle pain and stiffness are often curious about the difference between dry needling and acupuncture. Both treatments involve the insertion of needles but are distinct in their approach, techniques, and the theory behind them. At Ascend Physical Therapy, we specialize in dry needling, which is integrated into our comprehensive physical therapy programs designed to empower and heal our clients."

Pelvic health is an understated and often overlooked aspect of overall well-being, especially among men. Pelvic pain in men can stem from a variety of sources, frequently making diagnosis and treatment a complex process. Common causes include issues like prostatitis, which is inflammation of the prostate gland, or chronic pelvic pain syndrome, which includes a range of symptoms without a clear infection. Other factors, such as muscle or nerve dysfunction, urinary tract conditions, or previous surgeries, can lead to persistent pelvic discomfort.
These conditions can significantly impact quality of life, leading to discomfort during sitting, problems with urination, and difficulties in sexual functions. Understanding these causes is the first step toward effective management and is crucial for developing an appropriate treatment plan.
Physical therapy offers a non-invasive and effective way to manage and alleviate pain in the pelvic floor, where certified physical therapists use a range of techniques adapted specifically for male pelvic health. This includes manual therapy to relieve muscle tension, biofeedback to improve muscle control, and specific exercises to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles.
By focusing on the root causes of pelvic discomfort rather than just the symptoms, physical therapy helps create sustainable health changes, reducing the recurrence of pain and improving overall pelvic physical health.
The World Health Organization estimates there are 56 million concussions worldwide every year. From sports-related injuries to everyday accidents, these “mild traumatic brain injuries” can significantly impact your health and quality of life.
There isn’t a specific treatment for concussions. Still, along with physical and mental rest in the first week, new research shows that safe, low-impact anaerobic exercise helps speed concussion recovery.
Physical therapy is also an incredible resource, treating and alleviating a wide range of symptoms associated with a brain injury. When you work with a Physical Therapist, they develop an individualized treatment plan designed specifically for your recovery needs and goals. From dizziness and balance issues to nausea and neck pain, PTs also monitor symptoms and look for signs of post-concussion syndrome, where a patient abnormally experiences concussion symptoms for several weeks to months.
It’s true! Pelvic floor dysfunctions are more common than many of us think, and they can occur at any age.
The pelvic floor is a group of muscles that support the pelvic organs and assist in the functionality of the urinary and reproductive systems. With symptoms ranging from incontinence and pelvic pain to organ prolapse, pelvic floor dysfunction can significantly affect quality of life.
Luckily, there are ways to manage, alleviate, and treat these conditions through individualized care and recovery with a certified pelvic floor rehabilitation physical therapist.
By effectively and proactively managing these conditions, 1 in 3 women can improve their bodily functions, enhance sexual health, and reduce pain and symptoms associated with pelvic floor dysfunction.

Jess has been working with us at Ascend Physical Therapy for awhile now. She has been able to slowly transition back to all of the outdoor activities that she loves. We look forward to her continued recovery with us and appreciate her sharing her story. Thanks, Jess!
"I wondered when I would be able to get back to my favorite activities and wondered what season I would be in when that day arrived. I’m thrilled to say that I’m back in the saddle (so to speak) and hiking with a pack and my camera again!
I remember sitting at this spot so damn grateful that I was able to take this scene in and enjoy the crisp mountain air. I didn’t think I’d be up there this fall so this was a special moment for me.
What started out as possible tennis elbow quickly became much more involved and after months of physical therapy to help my arm, shoulder, and back, I am feeling great! I may always have phantom pains and my elbow has joined the other joints that ache with the weather patterns but it’s a big win for me to be at this place with my health.
I learned today how to start deadlifting and squatting with a bar correctly and I cannot wait to get back to my fitness goals. I have big plans for the next few years so I need my strength and my health to be great.
Shout out to for their amazing patience and willingness to get to the bottom of my pain and discomfort. This is not sponsored in any way but if you are in the Treasure Valley and need physical therapy, I highly recommend them."
Happy Halloween from all of us at Ascend Physical Therapy! Stay safe and spooky tonight!

Direct access in physical therapy allows patients in Idaho to directly seek treatment from a licensed physical therapist without first obtaining a referral from a physician. This is especially beneficial to patients in Idaho, where access to healthcare services, particularly in rural areas, can be limited. It provides patients with quicker access to specialized care, helping them address musculoskeletal issues promptly, and potentially preventing the progression of minor problems into more severe conditions. Direct access also empowers patients to take charge of their health, promoting early intervention and reducing the burden of unnecessary medical appointments and associated costs. It's like having a fast lane to pain relief and improved mobility, making healthcare more accessible and convenient for Idahoans.

Physical therapy aids active individuals with back pain by delivering tailored strategies to enhance strength, flexibility, and posture, essential components for maintaining spinal health. It provides exercises to fortify muscles surrounding the spine, reducing stress and improving stability. Manual therapies alleviate tension and improve mobility, facilitating pain-free movement. Furthermore, education on proper body mechanics and activity modifications help in avoiding strain and preventing injuries. By addressing both symptoms and underlying causes, physical therapy ensures active people can maintain their lifestyles without compromising their well-being, promoting optimal function and resilience in their physical pursuits.
