🍄 At Brody's cultivation workshop on December 2, 2023, Mickey kickstarted this bag of blue oysters. Mickey thought the bag was too dry and done fruiting, yet he turned to an unconventional solution: snow. The recent snow was enough to help do the unexpected! Reminding us of the resilience of mushrooms.

From Christine S.- the fall foray is Sept .29 - October 1 in McCall. Member registration starts Monday Aug. 28. The rains have blessed us with many different mushrooms.

Annual dues are just $25 for individuals or $30 for a family! This presentation should be just the thing to get you (even more) excited for the upcoming mushroom season!

As with our previous two monthly meetings we will spend a short time getting people online and addressing Association business, including foray and meeting plans, any toxicology reports, and the status of our membership and budget.

Then, Board Member Joe Matanzas will share his presentation titled “Early Mushrooms from the Boise area”. (The habitat information will apply to many locations besides Boise, so be sure to tune in even if you're outside the immediate area - you're likely to learn about a few new-to-you species.) The program will be covering local photos and observations from January to May end, with slides appearing in the program as the mushrooms appear on the calendar. It will include all of your most cherished late-winter to spring species and will introduce several ways to find more information about identifying and posting species on your own.

If you're on our mailing list, hopefully you've already received this information. For those that aren't, here's the latest update on spring and early summer events for SIMA:

Dear members and friends of SIMA,
I’m sure many of you have been wondering about when we’ll be getting back to a “normal” meeting and foray schedule. Sadly, our answer right now is simply “not yet”. But, like every other organization and workplace, we’re watching how the reopening goes and working with interested parties to get us back on schedule, but it’s going to take some time yet.
As a Board, and in consultation with the Quaker Hill Lodge in McCall (where we hold our spring and fall forays) we have decided to cancel our spring foray, originally scheduled for May 22nd. This was not an easy decision, but given the continued uncertainty of timing, the fact that our mycologist was unsure about travel from out of state, and that Quaker Hill didn’t feel they could prepare the new required procedures in time, we felt it was the wisest one. Our 2020 deposit has been moved forward and credited to the last weekend in May, 2021. Right now, our fall foray is still on, as planned. Thanks to Genille Steiner for coordinating those conversations.

In lieu of the weekend-long spring foray, however, we would like to plan several day forays over the remainder of spring and possibly into summer. Participants would be responsible for getting to the location themselves, where we would then organize small groups to go hunt and bring back finds for discussion and identification. Stay tuned for proposed dates and locations coming soon.

And finally, since our next regular meeting date (Monday, May 11th) falls within Phase I where gatherings are limited to 10 or fewer, we won’t be having an official meeting inside a building. Instead, a few of us will be available starting at 7:30 pm at the south end of Kristin Armstrong Municipal Park (500 S Walnut St, Boise, ID 83712) to help identify mushrooms that people bring in. If you’re comfortable attending, go out over the weekend or Monday, look for mushrooms, and bring what you find. We’ll do some socially-distant mushroom identification and discussion until at least 8 pm.

After that, please remember that monthly meetings will be on hiatus from June-September, as usual (in consideration of summer activities and travel). We will be planning some day forays instead, as mentioned.

Looking forward to when we can all gather a bit more formally. Until then, keep looking and learning!

I encountered this around Sagehen last Friday. Looks like that entire area might be effectively closed through a good part of the summer. So many logging trucks.

Logging operations ongoing and numerous timber sales planned on the Emmett Ranger District

Boise, Idaho, May 8, 2020 – The Emmett Ranger District of the Boise National Forest has numerous logging operations planned this spring and summer and wants to inform visitors to be cautious when traveling in the area. Forest visitors should expect to encounter logging traffic and drive forest roads with caution. Safety signs will be in place as will be signs notifying people of the CB channel trucks will be using.

“Public safety is our No. 1 priority and we want to inform visitors so they can plan accordingly, as there will be a lot of haul activity over the next few months” said Katie Wood, Emmett District Ranger. “All of the timber sales were designed to either remove dead and dying trees that have succumbed to insect and disease, including locations that were hit hard by recent tussock moth outbreaks, or to manage for future wildfire resistance.” Additional updates and information related to these operations will be provided as needed.

Operations will be underway on the following sales:

· West Scriver Stewardship Sale - located northwest of Crouch, Idaho.
May 11, 2020 - Log hauling on National Forest System (NFS) road 643 begins. Average haul will be 2 loads per day. As work progresses NFS 695 and 696 will also be used to haul logs.

· Sagehen and Hollywood Campgrounds – located in the Sage Hen Recreation Area, northeast of Ola, Idaho
Hazard tree removal is expected to be completed by June 30, 2020. NFS road 626 will be used to haul logs west and out through Ola, Idaho. The campgrounds are expected to be opened once work has been completed

· Shirts Timber Sale - Located about 8 miles south of High Valley.
May 20, 2020 – Log hauling will be on NFS Road 643 through High Valley and Ola.

· Little Sagehen Basin Roadside Hazard Tree – Located south of Sage Hen Reservoir.
Removal will occur on both sides of NFS roads 614 and 626.
Log haul will be on FS Road #626 to FS Road #653 through Ola. Average haul will be 11 loads per day.
(The haul might be shifting to go over Dodson Pass to Highway 95 in the near future.)

· Tripod Tussock Timber Sale - Located southeast of Sage Hen Reservoir.
Logging traffic will be on NFS Roads 626, 626A, 626H, 627, and #644 out to Highway 55 at Smiths Ferry. Average haul will be 10 loads per day.

· High Forks Good Neighbor Authority Timber Sale-Located approximately 4 miles southwest of Smiths Ferry. This is a timber sale on U.S. Forest Service Land being administered and managed by the Idaho Department of Lands. Log hauling will begin mid-May. Hauling will be on NFS Roads 601 to 644 out to Highway 55 at Smiths Ferry.
