In the United States, 26 jurisdictions, including the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands all have laws regulating naturopathic doctors. 🌿 There are continuing efforts to increase access to licensed naturopathic doctors at the state level, such as scope expansion and licensure.
Want to help reduce healthcare costs and improve healthcare outcomes? Advocate for access to naturopathic medicine by:
🩺 joining the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians in their state and federal advocacy efforts - naturopathic.org/page/Advocacy
🌄 getting involved at the Institute for Natural Medicine by learning about naturopathic medicine, volunteering, and supporting programs and research - naturemed.org
💪🏽 contacting your state association of naturopathic doctors to see how you can help (naturopathic.org/page/State-Associations).
Ready to revolutionize your wellness? Licensed naturopathic doctors (NMDs) are dedicated to helping patients achieve improved health and quality of life through tailored diets, lifestyle modifications, and recommendations that best suit their specific health and lifestyle needs.
Find a licensed NMD near you!
🌿 Institute for Natural Medicine database: FindANaturalDoctor.com
🌿 American Association of Naturopathic Physicians database: bit.ly/FindAnND
💻 If there aren't any NMDs in your immediate area, expand the search radius; many NMDs offer remote, video-chat appointments.
Naturopathic medicine is regulated differently in each state. Licensed and registered naturopathic doctors (NMDs) are required to graduate from accredited four-year residential naturopathic medical programs and pass an extensive postdoctoral board examination (NPLEX) in order to receive a license or registration. 🩺 They also have a specific scope of practice as defined by their state’s law, and must fulfill state-mandated continuing education and reporting requirements.
🤔 What if you live in a state that does not yet license naturopathic doctors? Many licensed NMDs move to pre-licensed states to serve communities like yours!
To find a licensed naturopathic doctor:
1) Check your state's status of licensure/regulation at naturopathic.org/page/ScopeforPatients.
2) Research NMDs in your area using FindANaturalDoctor.com or bit.ly/FindAnND.
3) Check their credentials. Make sure they hold an active license from a state that regulates naturopathic medicine, have graduated from an accredited naturopathic medical school (see aanmc.org), and have passed the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examination (NPLEX).
🌱 Once you have identified a potential NMD, schedule a consultation. This will give you the opportunity to meet the doctor, ask questions, and get a sense of their approach to treatment.
*Although the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians uses the designation “naturopathic doctor (ND)” to describe licensed naturopathic physicians, in Idaho this designation is not protected and licensed naturopathic physicians go by "naturopathic medical doctor (NMD)”

Half of all Americans live with at least one chronic disease, like heart disease or diabetes. But among US adults, 70-90% of common chronic diseases are potentially preventable by modifiable lifestyle changes.
Licensed naturopathic doctors (NMDs) proactively focus on prevention both to benefit individual patients and to improve public health. 🌄 Beyond reactively treating disease, naturopathic doctors emphasize and help individuals build optimal health by:
● Spending extra time with patients to identify the determinants of health and disease
● Approaching health through the lens of the whole person—body, mind, and spirit
● Educating about and promoting healthy lifestyle choices
● Assessing and addressing risk factors and implementing early interventions
● Determining genetic and hereditary susceptibility to disease
● Evaluating and addressing environmental and other external impacts on health
● Determining the impact of social relationships and community on health, and working to improve them, when relevant
The right preventive care at every stage of life helps Americans stay healthy, avoid or delay the onset of disease, and keep diseases they already have from becoming worse or debilitating.

👉 Ready to revolutionize your health? Find a licensed NMD near you at bit.ly/FindAnND or FindANaturalDoctor.com.
Licensed naturopathic doctors (NMDs) are regulated at the state level to practice naturopathic medicine.🎓 Naturopathic medical students attend accredited, four-year, in-residence naturopathic medical schools where they study biomedical sciences such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, and pharmacology.
Their medical education incorporates the latest scientific advances and natural approaches to illness prevention and management. 🩺 Students complete at least 4,100 hours of class and clinical training, including over 1,200 hours of hands-on, supervised clinical training.
NMDs are also evaluated on diagnostics, treatment modalities (nutrition, physical medicine, psychology, pharmacology), and medical interventions. Learn more about the rigors of naturopathic medical training from the !
What does this mean for patients? A licensed NMD has fantastic tools in their medical toolbox to optimize health, address the root cause of health problems, prevent disease, and revolutionize your wellness.
👉 Find a licensed ND near you at bit.ly/FindAnND or FindANaturalDoctor.com.
Licensed naturopathic doctors (NMDs) distinguish symptoms from underlying root causes; they understand that symptoms express a body’s attempts to heal, similar to the way a car’s check engine light demonstrates an engine’s unresolved issues.
NDs are trained to find and treat what’s “under the hood.” 🔍 While they can and do provide relief from symptoms (using natural approaches first whenever possible), their goal is to uncover and help heal the root causes of illness. In doing so, they facilitate the natural healing ability in patients so that symptoms can be alleviated naturally.
By addressing the underlying causes of illness, NMDs aim to promote long-term health and wellness rather than simply managing symptoms. This approach can lead to lasting improvements in overall health and vitality and can also reduce the need for long-term medication use or invasive interventions.

Chronic health issues are among the most common concerns that patients bring to naturopathic doctors. Why? Naturopathic medicine is ideal for those suffering from chronic conditions because it prioritizes getting to the root cause of illness.
Multiple factors contribute to both health and illness, including diet, lifestyle, genetics, psycho-emotional, socioeconomic, environmental issues, and more. 🌿 Trained to treat the whole person, licensed naturopathic doctors utilize the Therapeutic Order as a framework to help uncover, evaluate, and treat multiple obstacles to good health, which are also frequently root causes of illness.
The Therapeutic Order delineates the natural sequence and prioritization of care, providing the greatest benefit with the least potential for side effects. This treatment ensures the patient actively participates in health care decisions.
