On our MOST WANTED (for Eradication) LIST:
Purple loosestrife, Lythrum salicaria
What are you doing this Friday?
On Friday August 16 we are looking for volunteers who can give a couple hours to help cut and bag a patch of purple loosestrife, an invasive plant that is growing in our Warm Springs Creek project at Harris Ranch. Purple loosestrife is an invasive plant that grows in riparian areas and chokes out desired vegetation like willow and cottonwood. Our control effort will be to remove the plants and bag them to prevent future spread. This month is our chance to cut and control the flowering plants before loosestrife's prolific seed production continues it spread.
You will need work gloves (although we will have some extras just in case). If you have irrigation or hip boots we can put you in water which is fairly shallow. Street parking is generally available on the north side of Warm Springs Ave. such as on E. Barnside Way, E. Millbrook Way and E. Brightside St. The project site is a few hundred feet west of the Millbrook/Warm Springs intersection.
RSVP if you can help! Let us know you will be there at:

Tires are often illegally dumped in or by creeks and rivers. You’ve see them. Please look online for tire disposal and recycling services in the Treasure Valley to properly get rid of your tired old tires
It’s “Trash Talk Tuesday…”
So many tires, so many years… to decompose.
Tires can take 50–80 years and even longer to decompose in a landfill. Buried tires? They may never decompose. Tires in a river? While they decompose for 80 years or so, they can continue to leach toxins and chemicals into the water that contaminate the watershed and aquifers. Tires can also damage landfill liners, which can allow fluids and other harmful chemicals to escape.
Idaho is too pretty to trash!
Recycling is the best way to dispose of tires. Many communities have tire recycling programs that repurpose old tires for various uses, such as making new tires or playground surfaces. You can take your tires to a general or specialized tire recycling facility. Before dropping off your tires, you can contact the facility to ask about fees and restrictions.

Thank you to everyone who supports this great camp that teaches our kids how to be stewards of the local waters and fishes-
Fisherman- Lucky Peak is currently being drawn down 125 feet to do repairs on the Turner Gulch boat ramp. The US Army Corps of Engineers started the project this week and the low water levels in Lucky Peak will impact water temperatures on the Boise river in August.
Water temperatures on the Boise River are expected to rise and stay above 66 degrees, temps that can be especially taxing on trout. Please consider the Boise River fish first...
Typically water comes out the bottom of the dam, below the thermocline, where water is colder, but the Lucky Peak drawdown will draw the warmer surface water, the epilimnion layer of water, into the outlet zone which will increase the temperature of outflows.
The work will provide boaters with a safer ramp to use for low-water, off-season activities in the long run. But the drawdown will shorten the 2024 boating season by several weeks. The project is expected to wrap up in November and the reservoir will refill then.
Perspective: Trout fishing during low water and high temperatures Summer of 2024 is shaping up to be one of the hottest on record, so we are reposting this article from 2022 because it relevant to what many anglers are experiencing this year. This research was completed several years ago, but the conclusions are still applicable today. Higher stream temperatures h...
Our TU youth program in the field learning and making our Idaho a bit better, little by little…
On a small stretch of creek we collected lots of garbage and displayed it for all to note. We also learned about how long different materials take to decompose (tin cans- 50 to 100 years; aluminum cans- 80 to 100 years; plastic bags- 500 years to forever; glass bottles - 1 million years!) “Leave no trace”
What a fantastic week at our annual Trout Camp for kids 10-13! Lots of trout caught, tons of fun camp activities, fun sleeping under the stars outside at a Boise National Forest campground, roughing it off the grid for 4 days, learning fishing techniques, learning to be good stewards of the earth, learning how to get along with nature and each other. Great life skills tackled. Thank you to all our sponsors, donors and volunteers! .focht
Take action! Protect the Boise River. The Boise River is a Treasure Valley treasure, providing over 30% of the drinking water for Boise and irrigating over 300,000 acres of our farmland, but it is under threat from the CuMo Mining Exploration Project.
The Idaho Copper Corporation, a new “shell company” for the Canadian mining company MultiMet, has submitted plans to the Boise National Forest to construct over 8 miles of roads and clear more than 120 sites for test drilling in the headwaters of the Boise River near Grimes Creek. Read more…

YOU’RE INVITED! Trout Unlimited “Trout on Tap” event at White Dog Brewery! Gather together-
Join the Ted Trueblood Chapter for our “Trout on Tap” on Tuesday May 7 at White Dog Brewery! Come meet the new TU staff and hear a presentation on Apache Trout. We will gather at 6:30 pm at White Dog Brewery, 705 W. Fulton in downtown Boise
Have you ever heard of the Apache Trout? It’s one of our iconic native trout that resides only in Arizona, and it’s one poised to be the first trout, and sportfish, to be removed from the endangered species list. TU’s Fisheries Science Director, Dan Dauwalter, will discuss the Endangered Species Act, Apache Trout delisting and TU’s role in these processes. (Photo credits: Daniel A. Ritz)

Sign up for our next project this year- Ted Trueblood Trout Unlimited is teaming up with the USFS to **plant cottonwoods and willows from pots** on Little Pierce Creek, which is close to the Danskin takeout parking lot- about 11 miles below Anderson Ranch Dam.
We will meet at 9:30am in the Danskin takeout parking lot and plant trees until approximately 2:30 pm with needed breaks. Please bring your own lunch, snacks and water.
**Please Note** Willow/cottonwood planting can be labor intensive, especially at this harsh site where hammering rebar through rocky rubble will require moderate to heavy exertion. We are looking for about 15 volunteers.
We will be providing tools and training needed for the day. You can bring your own tools if you choose to- we need a few large-headed hammers if you have one to bring along. Dress for spring weather and please wear sturdy shoes. Bring your own food & beverages. See the attached map for parking.
If you have any questions about the project please contact Richard at [email protected]

Happy Arbor Day! Plant a tree… BUT NOT THIS ONE! Our TU chapter and other groups have worked hard to eradicate the Russian Olive Trees near our rivers and creek banks. They are like bullies! This invasive species is aggressive and chokes out our native trees. It interferes with watersheds and wildlife. Learn more at https://www.birdsandblooms.com/gardening/russian-olive-tree/?_cmp=stf
