Meet the Clifford family, one of School the World’s supporters! ❤️

Bob Clifford, a longtime friend of our founder from their Holy Cross days, has been passionate about our mission from the start. His three amazing sons have completed 8 service trips, and Bob himself has chaperoned 3! 🙌
We are so grateful to the Clifford family for their unwavering dedication and for making such a meaningful impact. Thank you for being a special part of our story! 💙

Olivia Curran wanted to do a “surf & serve” trip in Costa Rica. Her father wisely told her she was going to Guatemala if she was going anywhere and suggested she organize a Needham High School trip. She agreed and got nine of her friends to travel with her. Olivia loved the experience so much that she went back five times!
Today, Needham High is our biggest feeder for service trips with 30+ students traveling with us this year!

Our second fundraiser was organized with help from Kate’s friends from Holy Cross. The idea germinated when Kate went for her 25th college reunion and ran into classmates Jane and Joe Lawler very, very late one evening. After hearing about School the World, Joe announced: “I think we can help you with that Kate! We’ll host a fundraiser at our house!”
Those same friends helped School the World with our first student service trip with Wi******er High School, eventually with three Lawler children!

Our first fundraiser was at a neighborhood cheese shop in Milford, CT. We raised $8,000 with help from friends, family and neighbors. Enough to get started and build a school for children who didn’t have one. Now, we have built 148 schools and reached over 130 communities thanks to this kickstarter!

Meet Diego and Victor with our founder, Kate and her nephew, Ryan at a dedication ceremony. These two young boys moved through the world with confidence and ease even at that young age. Diego was the super smart one and Victor was the little mayor. School the World saw potential in them and helped pay for their education so they could have a better, brighter future.

How did our mission get started? Kate, our founder, met with the mayor of Chichicastenango in Guatemala. He said: ‘We need schools in our country and we’d like your help.’ To which, Kate said, ‘How about you (the government) pay half and we (School the World) pay half?’ He said yes and took Kate up a hill where the “school” was situated. It was a shack with kids sitting on tree stumps.Of course we would build a school there, but it was just the beginning...

Curious about how our student service trip might align with your teenager’s overall goals? In just one week, your teenager will not only create something tangible like help build a school or playground for students in a remote part of the world. But they will also connect with a new culture, immerse themselves in another language and way of living, make new friends and connections for life, and come back with a renewed sense of gratitude for all that they have (friend, family, daily comforts) in the States.

Want to know the greatest thing about service trips? They are an amazing way to teach American teenagers the concept of collectivism, which is evident in the communities where we work. These tight-knit, family-oriented communities offer warmth and care without expecting anything in return. We recently had one student say, “When I go back to DC, I’ll no longer close my bedroom door and be kinder to my parents.”

08/16/2024

Gratitude is by far the most essential part of the work we do, whether it’s expressed by parents, teachers, community members, or even our young students who are immensely grateful to have the opportunity to study, grow, and thrive! A big thank you to all those who support the essential work that we continue to do.

Good grades are important, but so is play. The evidence is overwhelming that play improves learning and builds critical life skills. We build playgrounds at our schools so children can experience the joy of play and develop skills like patience, mastery and conflict negotiation.

This International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, we’re raising awareness to protect the rights of the world’s indigenous population. Today, there are nearly 200 groups of Indigenous Peoples living in voluntary isolation and initial contact. They have a strong dependency on their ecological environment, and any changes to their natural habitat can harm both the survival of individual members and the group as a whole. People in voluntary isolation and initial contact is a testament to the rich tapestry of humanity, and it is a massive loss to our world if they no longer exist.
