🎥 Did you know Chinatown was once the home of many movie theaters?

🎞️ During the 70s and 80s, martial arts films were all the rage in Chinatown! These theaters were a big part of Boston's social scene. Residents and folks from all around the Boston area would come together and watch films with their community! However, as home video rentals became more popular, these theaters began to close.

🍿 ACDC's Films At The Gate (FATG) preserves Chinatown's movie theater legacy. This youth-led outdoor film festival brings together the Chinatown community through activities, live performances, and classic kung-fu movies. FATG will be on August 23rd-25th from 5:30-9:30 PM at the Chinatown Gate.

🧺 On July 20th, ACDC and Friends hosted our 2nd annual Summer Picnic at the Chinatown Backyard. We are grateful to all who attended and the dedicated staff and volunteers who made this event possible!

🍦 Participants enjoyed live performances, food, games, activities, and prizes. Families explored our Chinatown Backyard space and learned about heat resiliency and mitigation through tabling activities offered by our partners and learned about resources on how to beat the summer heat.

☀️ Why does Chinatown need these resources to combat the heat? Chinatown is the most densely populated neighborhood in the city of Boston and the home to many Asians. However, they have the least amount of tree canopy and open green space, making it one of the hottest neighborhoods in the state. ACDC wanted to give back to the community by providing accessible solutions to combat the grueling summer heat!

🎨 We had many wonderful activities, made by talented artists, that explored social justice issues in Chinatown:
✨ Artist Joanna Tam in partnership with Pao Arts Center created a participatory project called Imagine Safety. They aimed to amplify the voices of Chinatown community members on the issue of safety by providing a space to allow people to heal from the impacts of environmental justice, highway development, institutional expansion, and insecurity by sharing and imagining what a safe Chinatown looks like. Thank you to everyone who shared their stories!
✨ Artist Maria Fong engaged visitors to share what open space and public parks mean to them to build collective imagination in support of a future library park in Boston Chinatown. Participants drew and wrote on paper leaves to decorate the Library Park Cart with their ideas and vision for a park.
✨ Activity/Information Booths hosted by:
-Friends of the Chinatown Library (FOCL)
-Boston Public Library- BPL
-My Ombudsman
-Rose Kennedy Greenway
-Chinatown HEROS Project

🥰 Thank you to the volunteers from and performers from . Thank you for in-kind donations from Roche Bros, Costco, Pao Arts Center, Siena Farms, Whole Foods, and BPD for donating slushes to keep our guests cool!

🎤 Shout-out and thank you to our bilingual emcee Chu Huang and special guest speakers:
-Councilor At-Large Julia Mejia
-City Councilor Ed Flynn
-Chulan Huang from the City of Boston's Department of Neighborhood Services
-Zoe Davis from the City of Boston's Environment Department

💐 This event is in partnership with collective and .

💖 This year’s Summer Picnic is dedicated to the loving memory of Amy Cheung. Amy was a longtime friend of ACDC for almost 20 years, having been involved as an AmeriCorps Mass Promise Fellow, as program director, and as a board member. We invite you to join Amy's family, friends, and ACDC in honoring Amy’s legacy of dedication to her community, especially, her commitment to supporting young by donating to https://donorbox.org/amyyouthfund or the link in our bio.

This bill disaggregates data between different AAPI ethnic groups, including but not limited to Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Bangladeshi, Cambodian, Filipino, Korean, and Vietnamese.
