We recently had a panel discussion at Evoke Mind+Matter about the history and consequences of health inequity and how it creates mistrust within Black communities, resulting in low-quality and inadequate care. We also had an honest and constructive discussion about how we may alleviate some of these issues moving forward.
Check out the link in our bio to get a glimpse of the conversation.
Join us in celebrating Black joy with the Matter Makers. Hear from Kai Gaskin, Designer at Mind+Matter, talk about what Black joy means to her.
Join us as we celebrate Black voices in literature, with some thoughtful recommendations from the Matter Makers. Get a glimpse into our collection and add to yours—from difficult but important conversations to fictional worlds pulled together in a tale, there is something for everyone to read.
What is your “must read” book from a Black author?
Whether you’re cooking up a Thanksgiving feast or traveling to see friends and family, it’s important we take this time to reflect on all the things we’re thankful for.
We at Evoke Mind + Matter would like to give thanks to our marvelous MatterMakers for the outstanding work they do in making !
What are you thankful for this ? 🥂
Who doesn’t love a cozy night in with homemade pasta? The Matter Makers came together to knead, shape, and cook together. Between team tomato sauce and team pesto, the results were delicious and the experience was delightful—our flour dusted aprons and clean plates say so!
Here’s to the teams that come together to create unforgettable experiences— both at work and after! 🥂
Congratulations…to us 🥳 🦾! We are so honored to have received a Platinum MarCom Award for our work on an unbranded disease booth this year. Way to go, team!
As the year draws to a close, we’re using Mental Health Recharge Days to give us a boost and make sure we find time to enjoy life outside of work. Between 28-31 October, you would’ve found Matter Makers spending time with family and loved ones (trick or treat anyone?) and making the most of their time off. We were carving pumpkins, dressing up in our Halloween costumes, and so much more!
The reality of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is one that many of us may not experience first-hand. But for those who do, the diagnosis can be life-shattering, at least at first. We caught up with Elsa Franco, mother to a 6-year-old boy who was diagnosed with SCD shortly after birth. "When I heard ‘sickle cell,’ I heard death sentence to be perfectly honest. No one prepares you for these things," she said. No one, no matter the age, should have to walk through this diagnosis alone. Elsa is working to establish an SCD community in Boston to connect individuals and families affected by SCD. Her goal is to bring hope to families dealing with a new SCD diagnosis.
September 20 is voter registration day, so this is your official sign to go out and get registered if you haven’t already! 🗳✨
Your voice is so important, and every single vote matters. Let’s make together 🤝
This September is National Sickle Cell Disease Awareness Month, dedicated to raising awareness of sickle cell disease (SCD) and supporting advancements in SCD research and treatment.
To kick off this month, we’d like to give a brief history of SCD. The mutation that causes SCD originated in Africa thousands of years ago to protect against malaria, however, it took until 1910 for SCD to be discovered by western medicine. In 1960, blood transfusions became the first treatment for the condition. Since then, progress in treating SCD has been slow, largely due to racial discrimination.
Today, over 100,000 Americans belong to the SCD community, yet there is still no cure.
To learn more about SCD and how you can take action, please check out some of the resources below:

Whether it be whitewater rafting, showcasing our best pool dives, or spending quality time with our families, the Matter Makers have made the most of our summer Fridays this year! As fall quickly approaches, you can catch us on any beach, anywhere, any time after 1PM (ET) for the next four Fridays. 😎🍸☀️
Recently we asked the MatterMakers what they were reading to distract them from the end-of-summer blues, and they delivered. Take a look through the pics to get some fresh recommendations for your Goodreads list!
Recently, one of our Matter Makers —Vanitha Sankaran—spent a week in Scotland on a writing retreat, where she studied story structure and shape (with inspiration from the local area and architecture, no doubt!). During her stay, she worked with 29 others under the mentorship of a bestselling novelist, Maggie Stiefvater.
Vanitha describes developing the structure of a story as the scaffolding you build before you start adding specific details—a captivating experience indeed. We’re excited to learn more from it, because the realm of possibility in storytelling is limitless (even in healthcare!)
Our last, but certainly not least, intern spotlight is for Nastassja Woods 🫶✨
Swipe to read about her experience at Evoke Mind + Matter this summer. We had such a blast with the intern team this year, and hope we’ll be able to continue our involvement in the BLAC program for years to come.
Next up for our intern spotlight? Darnell Forbes! Swipe to see how he REALLY feels about Evoke Mind+Matter… 🙌✨
At Evoke Mind + Matter, we took part in the BLAC internship program this summer, and to say we’ve been with our interns is an understatement! Hear from Kai, part of the amazingly talented intern team we’ve been fortunate enough to work with for the last few months!
A chance to for in-office delight? We wouldn’t miss it for the world. As we came together last week, we were thrilled to see familiar faces in-person—some of us were stepping into the office for the first time! (we’re all getting used to the new normal, right?).
When our Matter Makers stepped into the office, the energy was through the roof—collaboration has never looked this enchanting.
At Evoke Mind + Matter, “work hard, play hard” is the unofficial motto. So, when the 2021 holiday party was sadly cancelled due to COVID-19, we set our sights for summer 2022.
It’s been a long time coming, but the MatterMakers finally got a chance to anchor up and throw down!
Click through to check out some pictures from our first ever boat party.

June 19th is World Sickle Cell Awareness Day, designated by the World Health Organization (2006) and the United Nations (2008) to raise public knowledge and understanding of the challenges experienced by patients and their families and caregivers.
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a group of hereditable genetic diseases affecting the body’s red blood cells, leading to acute pain crises, tissue damage, and risk of long-term complications as the sticky, crescent-shaped blood cells block blood flow to various parts of the body.
Our very own Tolulope Afolabi walks us through her personal journey with Sickle Cell Disease and provides helpful resources you can engage with to join us this year in raising awareness for SCD.
Four of our Matter Makers took on the Big Apple and attended the MM+M Women of Distinction awards event on Tuesday. It was an honor to hear from inspiring female trailblazers, celebrate achievements, and enjoy some pretty tasty eats (mmm burrata bruschetta!)
