Follow us! We're building the health workforce of the future to transform health systems and save lives.
On 2nd September 2024, Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi conducted orientation of Health Facility Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) co-opted members for the southern region districts and part of the central region districts at Amaryllis Hotel in Blantyre. This is an orientation to the new health facility M&E tool aligned with the nursing and midwifery care standards. This is a step towards improving quality nursing and midwifery care in health facilities through nursing and midwifery care standards. This activity was funded by SEED Global Health.
We're scaling up capacity in primary care, mental health, and RMNCH services in Malawi as part of our 2030 Country Strategy🇲🇼⬇️

Meet Dr. Evaristo Kunka and Dr. Mpundu Makasa – two graduates – and now leaders – of the University of Zambia’s (UNZA) family medicine Master of Medicine program, supported by Seed.
We partnered with UNZA to establish Zambia’s first family medicine program to educate practice-ready family doctors who are able to deliver high-quality primary care to patients of all ages throughout Zambia.
Zambia needs to almost double the health workforce to achieve universal health coverage (UHC) by 2030 and our Zambia Country Strategy will strengthen and create an enabling environment for the primary health care workforce in support of the Ministry of Health. Together with our partners, we will:
➡️ Graduate 25 (27% of the national target) family medicine doctors by 2030.
➡️ Place family medicine graduates as family doctors and teaching faculty in five level 1 health facilities in Lusaka (at least one doctor per facility) to provide high-quality primary health care by 2030.

We are excited to share our 2030 Zambia Country Strategy.
🌍 In support of the Ministry of Health Zambia and together with our partners - Association of Family Physicians of Zambia, Lusaka College of Nursing - UTH, Midwives Association of Zambia and University Of Zambia - we are strengthening the primary health care and reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health (RMNCH) workforce. We are also prioritizing creating a health system that is more climate resilient.
Together we're committed to achieving three key objectives:
1️⃣ Expand High-Quality Training Programs 🎓
▪ Train 25 family medicine doctors, contributing 27% towards Zambia’s national goal by 2030.
▪ Train 100 midwifery preceptors in Lusaka’s level 1 health facilities by 2030.
2️⃣ Enhance Clinical Excellence 🩺
▪ Decrease preventable institutional maternal mortality by 15% at Seed-supported facilities in Lusaka by 2030.
▪ Reduce preventable newborn mortality by 20% in the same facilities by 2030.
3️⃣ Strengthen Health System Resilience 🏥
▪ Collaborate with the Ministry of Health to improve workforce planning, reduce vacancy rates, and boost retention.
▪ Support the MOH to develop an evidence-based climate change policy and resource plan to adapt to, mitigate, and integrate the impacts of climate change at all levels of the health system.
By working closely with the Ministry of Health and others, we are paving the way for a resilient and climate-smart health system that accelerates progress towards universal health coverage.

Meet Dr. Joseph Emuron and members of the Katakwi General Hospital emergency response team.
In 2022, Dr Joseph completed a Master of Medicine degree in emergency medicine at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) in Uganda. One of only two emergency medicine training programs in the country that we set up in partnership with the Uganda Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, and two universities to educate emergency medicine doctors and faculty.
After graduating, Dr. Joseph returned to Katakwi General Hospital in the Eastern region of Uganda, where he has already set up an emergency response team to improve the hospital’s ability to respond to emergencies.
In Uganda, road traffic injuries make up 48% of all emergencies and Uganda’s Health Strategic Plan prioritizes strengthening the health workforce with a focus on emergency care and RMNCH. Our 2030 Uganda Country Strategy is purposely aligned with these efforts. Together, we will train 120 emergency medicine doctors and provide in-service training to 27,000 health workers.

🤰Every mom should receive the care she needs for a healthy delivery and a healthy future for herself and her baby no matter where she lives🌍
On we're supporting What To Expect because every death that could have been prevented with the proper care is unacceptable.
We are overcoming barriers to midwifery clinical education in Zambia with medical donations.
In the 5 locations across Zambia where our midwifery preceptors are based – Kanyama, Chawama, Chilenje, Chipata Level One Hospitals, and Mtendere Clinic – we recently donated 50 delivery kits and 5 storage cabinets. At our partner facility, Matero Level One Hospital, we donated 5 new delivery beds.
In Zambia, we know that access to medical equipment during training is a major obstacle for midwifery clinical education and training. These donations ensure that midwifery students can now train with the appropriate tools, better preparing them for future roles in health facilities as midwives. The new beds and delivery kits will also enhance maternal care in the recipient health facilities, improving care and saving mothers' lives.
This initiative, in partnership with the Ministry of Health Zambia and Lusaka College of Nursing - UTH (LUCON) is a step towards improving midwifery education and maternal health across the country.
