Stanley Norman Graven, aged 92, passed away on July 8, 2024, in Dallas, Oregon. Born on May 20, 1932, in Greene, Iowa, he dedicated his life to the medical field, specializing in neonatology. He was a beloved figure in both his professional and personal circles. Stanley's commitment to his faith, family, and the well-being of newborns and mothers marked his life's work.

He attended St. Olaf College and was a graduate of Wartburg College and the University of Iowa Medical School. His career was distinguished as a pioneer in the development of neonatology and the regionalization of neonatal care. He received the Virginia Apgar Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics as well as numerous other awards. His professional achievements in child development were matched by the deep personal connections he forged with those he served and worked alongside.

Even in retirement, he and Mavis could be found working with children in rural communities in Alaska and writing a book about the importance of developing faith in children.

A veteran of the United States Air Force, Stanley served from June 21, 1956, to July 25, 1964, bringing his medical expertise to the military community. His service was characterized by a dedication that mirrored his civilian career.

Stanley was a man of many interests, including building his lake cabin by hand in northern Minnesota with his wife Mavis (with no electricity or power tools). He enjoyed fishing, hiking, blueberry picking, and boating with his children and grandchildren. He cherished these moments greatly, just as he loved traveling and cruising with his beloved wife, Mavis, and their children.

He encouraged his children and grandchildren to embrace their gifts and strengths and flourish wherever they were led. Despite his busy professional career, he rarely missed events in which his children and grandchildren were involved. He was in the front row for school plays, musicals, band concerts, choir concerts, sporting events, birthdays, weddings, and births. Mavis regularly received flowers, and he regularly took the kids to the YMCA to swim on Sundays to give her some quiet time for herself.

He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Mavis Graven; children, Nadine, Kendall, and Douglas Graven; and grandchildren, Matthew, Bryndis, Tage, Ian, Maxwell, William, Alex, Katrina, Jessica, Janel, Jonas, Noah, and Ezra. He also leaves behind his great-grandson, Levi. Stanley was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Helen Graven; brothers, David and Lloyd Graven; and son, Michael Graven.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on September 28, 2024, at 1:00 PM at Valley Life Center Church in Dallas, Oregon. The service will also be available via live stream, allowing those from afar to celebrate Stanley's remarkable impact. His legacy of compassion, dedication, and love continues to inspire all who knew him. Feel free to share personal stories, photos, and well wishes for friends and family as well.

Heidelise Als Legacy
Just published ‼️
“(…) In 1982, Dr Als introduced NIDCAP, an approach to care informed by the unique communications and needs of each individual infant. The NIDCAP framework offers a guide for caregiving. It seeks to protect each infant from harmful, overly stressful, and/or exhausting experiences and to promote appropriate, optimal ones. This earliest intervention uses individual infant observation, assessment, and care planning throughout the hospital stay from the bedside to the whole health-care system.
These strategies can be extended to the family at home. At NIDCAP’s core is the understanding and support of the infant’s parent(s) as primary caregiver(s), supporter(s), and advocate(s).
Dr Als believed that the early, attuned, and consistent engagement of parents is critical for the healthy emotional and physical development of their high- risk newborns. She always acknowledged life and parenting realities and challenges while focusing on strengths, supports, and next steps. NIDCAP has been shown to support best medical, neurobehavioral, and social-emotional developmental outcomes.

Thousands of infants and families have benefitted and many more will benefit from the insights and wisdom of Dr Heidelise Als, truly the voice of the newborn.
Dr Als wrote:
“I am convinced that with the courage to trust in our- selves, in the infants, in the parents and the staff of nurseries everywhere, we will multiply trust, courage, creativity, and generosity and the effectiveness to bring about change on behalf of infants, families, and profes- sionals in intensive care everywhere.”

Just published! 🙌

“Despite advances in medical technology and infant care practices, the incidence of disability and neurodevelopmental challenges among survivors of infants cared for in intensive care units remains high.
Newborn individualised developmental care and assessment program (NIDCAP) implementation improves medical and developmental outcomes for high-risk in- fants and families requiring hospital care.
NIDCAP promotes the non-separation of infants and families, which enhances outcomes and improves clinical practice.
Conclusions:
NIDCAP is system-based, process-oriented, with attuned and responsive intervention that supports individualised developmental care for infants and families. Evidence shows NIDCAP intervention significantly improves medical outcomes, with less time on the ventilator, improved weight gain, decreased infant length of stay, as well as improved developmental outcomes for infants. NIDCAP imple- mentation also shows improved parental competence, decreased stress for the HCP teams and improved HCP' work satisfaction. NIDCAP training for HCPs and use of the NIDCAP Nursery Program improve medical, neurobehavioral and neurodevelopmental outcomes for infants and the well-being of infants and their families, as well as the HCP, who care for them.”

Meetings with NIDCAP trainers and NIDCAP professionals around the world are organized to share and reflect on the training program and address the issues that arise in our daily work in our units, working from a perspective based on the Synactive Theory and NIDCAP care.
We recognize and value the importance of native language in expressing ideas or reflections. Thus, we have initiated and have already held seven meetings in Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian since 2021. Additionally, we have opened these meetings to professionals who have completed the FINE 2 training.

This week, at the 8th Meeting, the team of the NIDCAP Training Center São João, Porto, Portugal, shared a clinical case of a baby diagnosed with a complex congenital heart disease. We discussed the issues that arose from it and reflected together from a NIDCAP care perspective and based on Synactive theory, supporting development and the family.
