How great is this? We get to spend three days at the Trauma Research Foundation 34th Annual Conference where I get to reconnect with colleagues and friends like Richard Schwartz from Internal Family Systems. Nothing beats hearing from the best about the latest findings on trauma, stress, and mental health. As importantly, we're learning about what to do with this information so we can better serve our clients.

What a great evening we had last night joining Mayor Michelle Wu and other women leaders at the Massachusetts Women's Political Caucus and GBH Forum Network in a sponsored, dynamic discussion about DEI in government and education, and the private sector.

Key takeaways were to embrace who you are—no matter your color or gender and continue to seek out opportunities. Sometimes you can feel punished by being a female or a person of color.

Boston Public Schools' Superintendent, Mary Skipper, spoke about her goal to put forth many programs to become more inclusive of race and color which comprises 85% of the BPS student body. These change makers are making sure that students of all color and genders have opportunities so they are empowered to go for opportunities to move on and be successful adults.

I had the chance to hear some of the best speakers talk about what they've learned in their careers and what they think is important at the 46th Annual Psychotherapy Networker Symposium in D.C. recently.

Two of those speakers were David Kessler and Bessel van der Kolk who held separate talks on how past trauma plays a huge part in human life no matter your background. We all have something to work on so we can live our best life—therapists included! We need to be 100% committed to working on it.

I was also reminded that empathy goes a long way to healing—it's not enough to be kind and empathetic with others if you don't practice those things for yourself first. So much of this industry is about helping others feel heard and validated, but it can be easy for us to forget how important it is for us to do the same for ourselves!

Another key take away was that therapists today are better educated and are better informed about mental health conditions. It also helps that patients are talking more openly about mental health, so the stigma of mental health is beginning to dissipate. We can get better with treatment. There is hope.

It was great connecting with past colleagues and meeting new ones. I'm already looking forward to next year's symposium!

Exciting news from the 2023 Psychotherapy Networker Symposium in Washington D.C.! Dr. Maria Ferreras, had the privilege of meeting up with David Kessler yesterday, one of the world's leading experts on grief and loss. Dr. Ferreras is attending the conference to deepen her knowledge of effective therapeutic interventions for helping her patients cope with loss. We're thrilled that she had the opportunity to connect with David and look forward to seeing how she incorporates his insights into her practice. Stay tuned for more insights here from this world class Symposium happening this weekend. (Hint: Alanis Morissette is in the house!)
