"When it comes to concussions, it's not a matter of whether you will recover. It's a matter of when."

Erin Payne was 13 when her life changed in an instant due to a concussion sustained at gymnastics practice. She battled headaches, nausea, light sensitivity and other persistent post-concussion symptoms throughout her teenage years, and wasn't able to attend high school in person.

It took time, patience, and perseverance, but Erin found treatment that helped her recover. Today, she's thriving in her third year at UNC-Chapel Hill and plans to enroll in medical school. This , Erin is helping those who face similar struggles in their own recovery.

In addition to sharing her hopeful message, she's already raised more than $1,000 to directly support the CLF HelpLine, which connects concussion patients and caretakers with the support they need during a uniquely challenging time. You can support Erin’s campaign here: https://www.classy.org/fundraiser/5711623

After a concussion, your brain needs time to heal. Rest in the first couple of days is crucial to recovery—both physically and mentally. Taking it easy now can prevent long-term issues down the road. 🧠💤

PSA: Resting in a dark room is no longer the recommended treatment for concussions!

While rest is important after a concussion, too much isolation can contribute to feelings of anxiety and depression, which can also cause issues with the recovery process. Current guidelines suggest a brief period of rest followed by a gradual return to light activity.

Let’s start with some brain injury basics: What is a concussion?

Though you can’t see it, a concussion is an injury that can change the way you think, feel, and function. Every concussion is different and will have a different recovery timeline, but each injury should be given proper time to heal.

Luis Salazar was 14 years old when he died by su***de 25 years ago. An extremely gifted athlete, Luis was known for being the hardest hitter on every team he played on. Warning: this story contains mentions of su***de that may be triggering to some readers.

Mike Meany lost his son Colin to su***de at age 17 after battling persistent post concussion symptoms that he kept to himself. This weekend marks the 5 year anniversary of his death.

Colin suffered two concussions in two weeks playing hockey, and he struggled with depression for the next two years, but didn't tell anyone what he was going through. Depression is common after concussion, and just one concussion doubles your su***de risk. Mike and his family want to educate others on those risks to prevent future families from experiencing the same loss and are dedicated to supporting those who are struggling. Since Colin's death, they have raised more than $100k to support the CLF HelpLine in honor of their late son.

We are very grateful for the support of the Meany family. If you'd like to support the HelpLine in Colin's honor, you can make a donation at https://www.classy.org/give/312896/ #!/donation/checkout
