We are celebrating the official opening of the new Seamus Heaney Centre at Queen's University Belfast last month. Thanks to the generosity of Irish American Partnership members, we were honored to support making this exceptional experience a reality.

The new centre honors the legacy of one of Ireland’s greatest poets with a large venue space, a scriptorium, offices and creative spaces for students and staff. A new public exhibition area will also display the Seamus Heaney archive for the very first time. The new space showcases the rich literary history of Queen’s and creates a fitting space for Irish writing talent of today and tomorrow.

Our Young Partners gathered at Cisco Brewers in the Boston Seaport for their annual Summer Social, held this year in support of St. Muredach's College in Ballina, County Mayo.

Joined by over 75 Partnership friends and supporters, our Young Partner’s participation helped the Irish American Partnership send a grant of $10,000 directly to St. Muredach’s College, providing much-needed support for the school. The appreciation for this support is deeply felt, as Principal Wayne Walsh describes:

“In 2023, as the new principal of St. Muredach’s, I was taken aback by the poor condition of the buildings, the equipment, and the general deterioration of the school over time. Any support the Young Partners can provide would be a huge help to our students. It will also play a part in protecting the school’s future, putting pride back into the school.”

Thanks to the Young Partners for their kind support. To learn more, and receive updates on future events visit https://www.irishap.org/young-partners-join-us

The Irish American Partnership is delighted to launch SparkStart Digital; an education program to support the work of U.S. Special Envoy to Northern Ireland for Economic Affairs, Joe Kennedy III.

The Partnership has developed and invested $100,000 in SparkStart Digital, in partnership with FIT - Fastrack into Information Technology - which will support 350 participants for three years and is directed towards unemployed marginalized young people in Belfast.

"There are hundreds of people who will be helped by this investment, and I'm so moved that the Irish American Partnership would think to do so in collaboration with our efforts," said U.S. Special Envoy to Northern Ireland for Economic Affairs, Joseph P. Kennedy III.

Special Envoy Kennedy met with President & CEO Mary Sugrue, and FIT CEO Peter Davitt at the Portview Trade Centre where they presented the tailored digital skills initiative for disadvantaged young people in Belfast.

“It is fitting that a local school should now benefit from such philanthropy and goodwill after many years of hard work and dedication took place in Paddy Harte’s own office on the Market Square in Letterkenny throughout the 1980s and 90s.”

Donegal visionary, Paddy Harte TD, was instrumental in the creation of the Irish American Partnership and achieving seed funding from the Irish Government in the mid 1980s.

Last week, CEO Mary Sugrue and VP Clodagh Boyle were welcomed back to Scoil Cholmcille in Letterkenny, Co. Donegal, where they presented a grant as part of the Irish American Partnership's Outdoor Play and Learning Program. The school community of almost 650 students (and 50+ nationalities) looks forward to this outdoor classroom and sensory garden, designed to promote outdoor play, physical activity and holistic learning.

We wish former President Mary Robinson, Chair of The Elders a very happy 80th birthday today.

Mrs. Robinson has shattered many glass ceilings in her long career, including most notably as the first woman to be elected President of Ireland in 1990 (- 1997) and also serving as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (1997 – 2002).

The Irish American Partnership is incredibly proud to partner with The Mary Robinson Centre to ensure ongoing engagement with her remarkable legacy.

It was a homecoming of sorts for United States Ambassador Claire Cronin who spent a celebratory morning in Moville, Co. on Tuesday, alongside Principal Liam McDermott at Scoil Eoghain National School.

The IIrish American Partnershipgranted a $10,000 gift to the school in honor of Ambassador Cronin’s forebears who hailed from the Peninsula.

The Ambassador was delighted to meet with 240 pupils and the teaching staff, touring the school, enjoying Irish dance, choral, and poetry recitations by the Scoil Eoghain pupils. Said Ambassador Cronin, “It is wonderful to be back on the Inishowen peninsula, the home of my grandfather. The Irish American Partnership builds upon the vital connections between the United States and Ireland through generous donations that empower Ireland’s young people. I am delighted to see the partnership’s impact across the island, and today in Donegal with this grant to Scoil Eoghain in Moville.”

Partnership CEO Mary Sugrue and Vice President Clodagh Boyle also visited schools that had received recent funding in the region, including Scoil Mhuire Creeslough, Scoil Naisiunta Glasain, Craosloch, and Scoil Cholmcille in Letterkenny. These grants are part of their hallmark O’Neill School Grants program, which has supported more than 600 Irish schools.

A great read from Image Magazine Ireland about an incredible program:

Co-edited by Oscar-winning actor Cillian Murphy and Professor Pat Dolan, IONBHÁ: The Empathy Book for Ireland, is part of the Activating Social Empathy initiative, a transition year curriculum developed by the UNESCO Child and Family Research Centre University of Galway, and funded by Irish American Partnership.

“The trick seems to be to work on it. To activate it. To make a connection. To listen. Like learning an instrument, or writing a story…like a good meditation. All of these things can be taught and can be learnt, and the same is true of empathy.” – Cillian Murphy
