Now that I am a seasoned parent of teenagers, I’m going back to the old school way that my dad made sure I made it home by curfew: an alarm clock.
Before the days of technologically tracking your child, he would set an alarm clock for my curfew - and this is key, AFTER I left the house - and I had to make it home in time for my curfew to turn it off, or it would wake him up and he would know something was amiss. It also let my dad go to sleep knowing he would be woken up if something was wrong.
So now we do it with our high school senior. He’s never missed turning it off it yet. Sometimes old ways are the best ways.

Let’s continue this week on a good note, and release the human tendency to speak harshly to ourselves and about ourselves 🙌
You may not be where you want yet, and you may being seeing old patterns repeating themselves. You won’t get past that by beating yourself up.
You may not be where you want, you may even see old patterns repeating themselves. But you still deserve kindness 💗

A while back, I was working on an article and asked parents to talk to me about the loneliness and isolation of their kids. So many of you generously did. Here's the article in the current issue of the Psychotherapy Networker.

10 Common Problems Middle School Girls Face (And How Parents Can Help) Middle school can be a challenging time for young girls. Here are 10 common problems middle school girls face and how parents can help.
Yep, just notice the thoughts and refocus to the present.
The way we treat ourselves is so important.
At the heart of my latest book, Fierce Self-Compassion - I break down self-compassion into two different branches: tender self-compassion and fierce self-compassion - as shown in the graphic by above! This explains the difference between the two and why both are needed for balance:
“The quintessential question of self-compassion is ‘What do I need right now?’ and more specifically ‘What do I need to help alleviate my suffering?’ The answer to this question changes depending on the circumstances. Sometimes what we need is to accept ourselves in all our human imperfection, to love ourselves as we are in the moment. But that doesn’t mean we necessarily want to stay as we are in the moment. If a herd of cattle is stampeding toward you, it’s not the time for self-acceptance, it’s time for action.
If tender self-compassion is metaphorically like a parent soothing his crying child, fierce self-compassion is like Momma Bear who ferociously protects her cubs when threatened, or catches fish to feed them, or moves them to a new territory with better resources. Just as tenderness can be turned inward so that we nurture and care for ourselves, the fierce energy of Momma Bear can also be turned inward to stand up for ourselves.
What’s essential is that these two faces of self-compassion are balanced and integrated so that we can be whole. When both are present, it creates a caring force that can be used to transform ourselves and the world around us.”

Demand Avoidance: When Kids Refuse to Follow Directions Cooperation requires maintaining their sense of autonomy.
My kids' pediatrician once told me that teenagers speak in code and it's up to parents to figure out what they're trying to communicate.
When they're angry, sassy, rolling their eyes or sighing heavily... it's all a form of communication.
And, when they plop on our beds at 11:00 p.m. ready to tell us about their day, show us a funny video they saw on Tiktok or ask us for a back rub - that, too, is a form of communication
Even though they may not be saying it aloud, they're telling us how they feel, what's in their heart, and what they want us to know.
We just have to slow down long enough to read between the lines.
We just have to slow down long enough to listen... I mean REALLY listen, to what they're trying to say.
❤️❤️❤️
Perfectionism can create unnecessary pressure and anxiety.
By teaching children that it's okay to make mistakes and that imperfections are a natural part of life, we empower them to build resilience and a healthier sense of self.
Embracing imperfections lays a foundation for self-acceptance!
Hopefully, these phrases can help you connect to your perfectionist kid and show them that you’re there for them.

When more people come forward about OCD, it spreads awareness and helps fight the stigma that keeps others from seeking treatment. What about some good “what ifs?”
✨Helping kids navigate through anxious moments with love and patience 💗
So true, it’s important to be aware of the other manifestations as well.
Sometimes we just look at anxiety through one lens.
👉 A person who seems nervous with sweaty palms is anxious.
👉 A person who struggles to be in social situations is apprehensive and anxious.
But anxiety can show up in many different ways.
When we see our kids and teens are...
😴 Fatigued
😠 Irritable
😓 Restless
🤔 Overthinking
🤯 Scattered
🤐 Quiet
this could also be anxiety.
Why is it important to know this?
Because we could be too focused on the behavior instead of the underlying feelings causing our kids to withdraw or act out.
What are some other signs of anxiety? 👇
Love this 💕
In today's fast-paced world, it's essential to guide our children toward prioritizing what truly matters: their inner worth, mental health, emotional intelligence, and self-confidence.
As parents, we can lead by example, emphasizing the importance of self-care, self-compassion, and self-awareness.
By nurturing their inner selves, teaching them to navigate their emotions, and instilling the belief that they are enough just as they are, we empower them to face life's challenges with grace and confidence.

My Story
I'm a clinical psychologist passionate about helping clients from young children (ages 5 and above) to teens, college age students, and adults, who are struggling with uncomfortable stress and anxiety symptoms learn effective strategies to face and overcome their fears and worries and gain confidence, security, and resiliency. I use a cognitive behavioral acceptance based therapy model that includes a mindfulness approach to work with children and their families to modify behavior and feelings and to help people regain their sense of direction and growth while increasing independence.
I moved to Colorado in the summer of 2008 to complete my pre-doctoral internship at the Children’s Hospital in Denver. Even though I grew up on the east coast, I knew Colorado was where I was meant to stay. While I maintain close ties to my family and friends out east, I absolutely love everything the Colorado lifestyle has to offer from the spectacular nature and scenery, to the active yet laid back and intellectual culture, and the sunny yet seasonal characteristics. I have found my best self here and seek to continue to grow and thrive while raising my daughter.
I previously had a private practice in South Florida so it was a natural transition to set up shop in Boulder after I completed my training. I feel so blessed and fortunate to have worked with and helped so many kids, teens, adults, and their families. I am grateful everyday that I get to do what I love and that my clients trust me and my methods to help them overcome life’s struggles. It is beyond rewarding to see people improve and see the strategies work. Even when there are setbacks I know that is part of of the process of growing and learning. Without challenges and failures we don’t grow. It is how we utilize and what we learn from our obstacles and struggles that changes us for the better to be our strongest selves.
Please don’t hesitate to schedule an initial phone consultation through my website to learn more about whether therapy is right for you.
