Our concerts on November 10th and 12th of this year will mark the beginning of Cantabile's 35th season since incorporating and becoming a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. That's more than 35 years of important and meaningful music-making in the Boulder community! We are grateful for all these years and look forward to many more to come.
When asked about what makes Cantabile special, I immediately talk about the singers, their friendship with each other, and the joy with which they greet each other at rehearsals. The energy in the room on Tuesday evenings when we rehearse is ecstatic. It may sound odd that it isn't the concerts or the music-making particularly that leaps to mind, but the music would not be possible without the foundation of friendship and support that defines Cantabile's membership. This 35th season is titled "Joyful Past and Hopeful Future" and each concert will strive to juxtapose those two things: we celebrate our history while looking forward to what comes next.
Our first concert, which I've entitled "Joy Down Deep", focuses on those ideas of friendship and community, while also speaking to the emotions that drive us to return week after week to sing together. Our concert will begin with a piece by Melanie DeMore entitled "I Will Be Your Standing Stone." It is a song we can sing to each other, to reassure each other that we will stand by each other through thick and thin. The rest of the first half follows with sounds that shout out our love of music and particularly in making it together. From Rollo Dilworth's arrangement of "I Sing Because I'm Happy" to Dan Forrest's exuberant "Music of Living," we will be singing with a raucous and deeply felt joy in being together. The second half turns inward, reflecting on important pieces from Cantabile's past such as Stephen Paulus's "The Road Home" and David Dickau's "If Music Be the Food of Love."
This concert is just the first of our three-concert season, and we hope to see you at each one as we celebrate not just the past we are so grateful to have experienced but also our hope created by the music yet to be made.
We hope you will join us for as many concerts as you can as we explore our Joyful Past and Hopeful Future.

Boulder Arts Week 2023 Join us again at Boulder’s only large-scale, inclusive celebration of our community’s vibrant arts and cultural offerings and our city’s thriving…
Cantabile believes that singing and hearing choral music can spark joy, deepen self-awareness, build friendships within communities, and foster understanding and compassion for the experiences of others.
When I first began envisioning our third and final concert of the 2022-2023 season, I let this core belief and our season's theme -- The Art We Need -- guide me. It felt crucial to me to pursue works that went beyond my personal comfort zone and that exposed both the choir and our audiences to musical content outside our lived experiences. So I began searching outside the classic Western choral canon for a larger, celebratory, and multi-faceted piece. I found Jerod Impichchaachaaha' Tate 's "Iholba' (The Vision)" and our calling for this concert: to lift up the work of Indigenous musicians and composers. It is a timely and necessary endeavor, and we are thrilled to invite you on the journey.
In Tate's "Iholba' (The Vision)," he sets his own poetry of earth-centered imagery about human experience to musical material that is based on the Chickasaw Garfish Dance song. Composed for chorus and orchestra, the work asks the choir to sing in Tate's native Chickasaw language and gives us the great opportunity to collaborate with 16 local string, woodwind, and percussion instrumentalists.
Accompanying this central work will be three additional pieces: "Stomp on the Fire" by Andrea Ramsey, which uses the voice and the percussive sounds of the body to create an expression of our collective human journey; "Chante Waste Hoksila (My Kind-hearted Boy)," a traditional Lakota lullaby arranged by Linthicum-Blackhorse in 2022 in honor of the children of Uvalde; and the "Wichita Baptist Hymn" transcribed by Tracey Gregg-Boothby
and arranged by Andrew Marshall, which examines and preserves two melodies of the Southern Plains Wichita tribe, or Kitikiti'sh, of which she is a member.
I am excited to present these pieces to you and to invite you to join me outside of my comfort zone on May 5 & 7 at First Congregational Church UCC Boulder. Together, I hope we might honor these important voices and gain a new perspective.
