Two years ago, almost to the day, Richard A. Lambert (former long time artistic and executive director, founder, and actor of The New PhoenixTheater on the Park, and special friend) reached out to me inquiring about pertinent information related to the Historic Colored Musicians Club and Jazz Museum. All information was sent to him as requested, and that was the last anyone heard from him regarding that issue. In the interim, Richard had to make excruciatingly difficult decisions regarding his beloved theater and its dissolution plan. To be clear, “When a nonprofit is dissolved, it is legally obliged to create a plan for the liquidation and distribution of its material assets to other nonprofits with similar missions. When New Phoenix decided to dissolve and liquidate its assets, most notably its building on Johnson Park, it realized substantial proceeds that have now been distributed as significant grants to 24 nonprofit organizations, including The Historic Colored Musicians Club and Jazz Museum.) Thank you Edmund Cardoni for those words
A very heartfelt Thank You to the ever humble, extremely talented, benevolent and now Philanthropist, Richard Lambert on recognizing our continued hardwork and dedication to our cherished club. The years of YOUR commitment to professional theater will always be celebrated and certainly remembered. You were an original trailblazer in theater, and maintained and fully executed works of treasured theater for over 20+ years, making gargantuan differences in the lives of many. We are all in awe and to be honest, totally astonished, with your most generous grant of $12,700.00 and are extremely honored to have been recognized by you of our ongoing work for continued programming of world class musicians, educational programming, amplifying our history so that others can be aware through generations to come, and the acknowledgment of one of this community’s historic landmarks. We will continue to make not only YOU proud, but our entire community as well, as we continue to move forward with our eyes on the future, as we strive to build stories and legacies. On behalf of the Historic Colored Musicians Club, and myself, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
“When people can’t abide things as they are, when they can’t abide the present, they do one of two things… either they… either they turn to a contemplation of the past, as I have done, or they set about to… alter the future. And when you want to change something… you Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!“

If you have come to the Buffalo History Museum for one of The Colored Musicians Club & Jazz Museum's jazz nights, then you might have run into this local legendary star.
George Scott, born on March 10th in 1957, discovered his love for jazz at a young age. After a few years of committed attendance to the club, Scott explored his gravitation towards Saxophone and took lessons from a local musician who was also an English teacher at McKinley High School. Nowadays his band, George Scott's Big Band, is well-known throughout the region.
Scott says the Colored Musicians Club was like a second home to him growing up. He was taught by "a community minded group of guys," who truly looked after the community, churches, and schools.
Learn more about the story behind George Scott and other Uncrowned Community builders in our new exhibit, "Say Their Names: Honor Their Legacies." And Join the Colored Musicians Club this Sunday evening, Feb 25th, at 6pm for an evening of Jazz!
