I Statements and Agreements for Conflict Resolution | Couples Therapy in Texas — Center for Couples Counseling 04/17/2024

A great read from Center For Couples Counseling:

Have you ever started a conversation that you knew would be difficult but expected it to go well, and all of a sudden it goes sideways? Accusations are flying, attacks are launched, and both partners get defensive. We never want couples to shy away from conversations just because the topic is hard or uncomfortable, but it's appropriate to use agreements and have a framework for communicating your thoughts and feelings in a safe way that your partner can receive. Therapist Sky shares how to use "I statements" and provides ideas (with examples!) of other agreements that will help you to connect during and after conflict instead of leave the conversation feeling worse than when it started.

"I Statements" and agreements can take you from making accusations and spewing anger towards your partner to arriving at a place of connection and empathy. Creative Connections still has room in their teen art therapy group! They need at least 3 people to sign up per week in order to run it. We know summers are busy, but this is a great opportunity for teens to get off their screens, connect with others, create art, and express their feelings and emotions.

We are also happy to welcome Michaela Farley, MHP. Call us to schedule a teletherapy appointment with Michaela (612) 568-6050.

Michaela Farley is a Mental Health Practitioner providing therapeutic services via Telehealth and in-person in Burnsville. She received her master of science degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from St. Cloud State University. Her experience includes working with adolescents and young adults seeking identity transformation, as well as adults and couples with sexual dysfunction and/or sexual disorders. She also has experience in working with individuals, couples, and families for life transitions, PTSD, and sexual identity.

Michaela’s theoretical orientation typically revolves around Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Emotionally Focused Therapy, Systems Theory, and Mindfulness. Her approach views the humanistic part of every individual, including their values, strengths, and mindset. She observes how our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are impacted by both our histories and our future goals. She enjoys seeing how clients can create new meanings and purpose through this lens and move towards growth. It is often an experiential process as clients discover how they experience their thoughts and emotions in the moment. Through this, her goal is for the client to find healing and hope in transforming and building themselves and their goals. Michaela understands that beginning therapy can feel uncomfortable or difficult for clients, and wants all to feel like they have a safe space wherever they are at and process at whatever pace they feel comfortable with.

Michaela currently lives in Mankato, MN. She enjoys spending time with family and friends, and her new puppy. She enjoys being outdoors, photography, and a good cup of coffee.
