"We have seen that decision makers from several secretaries of education in Brazil who participated in local [Festivals of Invention and Creativity] came away determined to offer these opportunities in their school systems and subsequently incorporated the festival into the official calendars. Increased buy-in at the public policy level would be a tremendous takeaway from our J-WEL project."

Ann Valente, educational research manager at the MIT Media Lab, shares the biggest takeaway she hopes comes from her grant project focused on creating resources to deepen and broaden the reach of creative learning experiences.

Through its Education Innovation Grants, the Jameel World Education Lab aspires to develop the building blocks, ideas, and connections that power global transformation in learning.

MIT Jameel World Education Lab Grants Inaugural Frontiers in Digital Learning Awards 07/01/2024

“Our goal is to strengthen knowledge of the design, implementation, applicability, and impact of digital learning innovation at MIT and across the world. Instructors and leaders in J-WEL’s network are eager to learn about field-tested insights and to launch their own tests and experimentation...Such small-scale efforts could reveal new insights about challenges and opportunities in digital learning that could apply everywhere—including on the MIT campus.”

Anjali Sastry, faculty director of the Jameel World Education Lab, explains the goal of the Frontiers in Digital Learning awards, a new grant program that shares insights from MIT Open Learning Digital Learning Lab researchers with the world.

Making implicit knowledge explicit 06/26/2024

"We are seeking to extract that ‘je nais se quoi’ that most experts cannot verbally explain to others, and that is only transferred through extensive training and mentorship. By instrumentalizing the glassblowing experts and their tools, we seek to quantify the different actions required for a glassblower to complete a task, and use this information to create instructional material that will facilitate comprehension of the glassblowing activities."

MIT Open Learning Research Scientist Andrés Felipe Salazar Gómez shares what excites him about his grant project focused on discovering ways to capture and pass on expert knowledge of MIT Glass Lab glassblowers.

Through its Education Innovation Grants, the Jameel World Education Lab aspires to develop the building blocks, ideas, and connections that power global transformation in learning.

MIT Jameel World Education Lab Grants Inaugural Frontiers in Digital Learning Awards 06/18/2024

The MIT Jameel World Education Lab (J-WEL) is proud to announce the first grantees of the Frontiers in Digital Learning awards, a new grant program that curates, activates, and shares insights from MIT Open Learning Digital Learning Lab (DLL) researchers with the world.

Selected proposals build on the DLL experience with digital learning innovations at MIT by identifying a transferable idea that is recommended for further testing in a new setting. This fall, grantees may be awarded additional funding to work directly with one or more J-WEL members to explore a practical and academically-grounded implementation of an idea aligned with their original paper.

Congratulations to our DLL grantees John Harrold (MIT Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE), Jessica Sandland, (DMSE), and Mary Ellen Wiltrout (MIT Department of Biology).

J-WEL Faculty Spotlight: Prof. Joshua Bennett – ‘What does success look like?’ 06/04/2024

“I hope this becomes a kind of national model…if you have a local university and a high school, you can do this. You can go into a community archive…and make the argument that the kind of art we’re committed to is not just about our emotions or mental state…but it’s about how our emotions and mental states are informed by history, and how we can reach back into our shared past to build and safeguard the future world.”
