I would like to remind you all that at Canton Cup 2024, we are honoring our fallen heroes once again. We all look forward to watching our soccer players on the field. We would also make sure to not forget that it is Memorial Day weekend. Memorial Day is a special weekend to mourn US military personnel who have fought and died while serving in the US Armed Forces. Canton Cup 2022 was our first year creating Fallen Hero signs for each field at Independence Park. It was a huge hit for the families of the fallen heroes and for all that enjoyed reading the stories of the heroes. I know it was special to our team to design these signs for all of our wonderful families and friends. We would like to continue this new Canton Cup Tradition.

We are asking if you (or a friend) have a special fallen hero that you would like to honor, please fill out the submission form below with as much detail as possible. We are at least asking for: Name, DOB, Date of death, branch of service, rank, conflict/war, a brief background on the hero, and a picture. We will create a sign with the information on it and have it posted at the tournament. I will contact you about the fields that your son/daughter may be playing on and be sure to put the sign at one of those fields. At the end of the weekend, if you would like your sign, then you are welcome to it. We would appreciate that you let us know so we can be sure to print another for next year so we have enough for all the fields.

If you have any questions, please send them to [email protected].

It is with extremely heavy hearts that we inform you that we lost a great man and a great leader early morning Christmas Eve: Our President Jim Harkins.

The Harkins Family is synonymous with Soccer in the Area. Jim’s father was just recently inducted into the MSYSA Hall of Fame in 2019 and Jim carried that torch being involved with our club, Canton Soccer Club and Detroit City FC Youth West and others (MSDSL, Salem HS Boosters, Canton Cup, etc.) in several capacities over the last almost 20 years along with his wife, Amy. Jim started coaching recreational soccer as their four children Olivia, Abigael, Logan and Ethan came of age. All four of them eventually moving on to continue their careers in College (Alma, Concordia and the two boys currently at LTU). Since then, he has served in many different roles, including Club President since 2019, where he led the club through the pandemic and was an integral part of making Detroit City FC Youth what it is today.

But most importantly, Jimmy was just a good man! You would always find him catching a game with a smile on his face, whether it was canvasing the Midwest to catch one of the kids home or away matches or as a season ticket holder at Detroit City FC. If he wasn’t watching live matches, you could probably find him on his La-Z-Boy catching whatever was on the tv, including his faithful Arsenal team (nobody is perfect 😉). Jimmy’s passion for the game was infectious and he wanted to provide that opportunity for all, from kids to adults at every level and most recently with our TOPSoccer program that provides free classes to kids with special needs.

We are all just extremely gutted for his family and entire soccer community. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Visitation is set for tomorrow, Thursday December 28th from 2-8pm at Schrader-Howell Funeral Home (280 S. Main St., Plymouth, MI 48170). Click here for obituary and details:

Happy to be once again hosting the Special Olympics here at Independence Park. Great organization and cause.

09/15/2023

Hi all,

Next week we will be spending $9,000 to have this “super machine” come in and aerate while injecting seed and fertilizer to all of the bare goal areas at Independence Park.

HELP ME HELP YOU!
As a former keeper I always hated having to traverse potholes while trying to make a save or navigate a cross. While these areas take most of the abuse, most of the abuse can be avoided. Please tell your players and keepers to take care of these areas ….it is literally their home. These bare areas mostly come from keepers kicking the area. I don’t know why ..boring game with little action, trying to build a sand castle? Anyway, let’s all work together as we try to make improvements to our home fields.

09/05/2023

HELP!!! Our TopSoccer program continues to grow, but we don't have enough "Buddies" (volunteers). All you need is a smile and we'll direct the rest. I'll say it again, it will probably be the best hour of your week!

So if you're around Indy on Wednesday nights (5:15-6:15 on the GK training area), stop on in. We say minimum age is 12, but we've had younger and it's been awesome. For all details, schedules and to get added to our staff list, click here: https://cantonsoccerclub.sprocketsports.com/club/topsoccer

HEADS UP! It looks like several people were victim of a "smash and grab" this morning at Independence Park, when their vehicle windows were smashes and personal belongings stolen. If you witnessed anything, please let the authorities know.
