More from the Muddy Creek paddle today!

Photos from Yellow Breeches Educational Center's post 05/30/2024

Fishing Creek Girls got out on the Muddy Creek for the first time in 15 years!

What we learned: We should have come back sooner.

This last late day was one for the books with each one of these students eagerly paddling rapids, gritting out the toughest parts of the paddle, and maintaining an overall positive mindset through it all. Great day all around for this crew, good work.

Congratulations to our Fishing Creek Jr. High students on another successful year! We cannot wait to see the amazing things you do next!

In the next chapter of our ongoing film series, students take their foundational knowledge of rock climbing to the next level on some of the East’s most challenging rocks, with the backdrop of vibrant reds, yellows, and oranges of the Seneca, West Virginia canopy. This chapter promises to leave you on the edge of your seat as students take on and overcome some incredible challenges.

Prior to this trip, students work alongside our experienced instructors as they build on foundational knowledge of rock climbing by learning knots, belay techniques, and rappelling.

The YBEC Seneca trip is designed for students and teachers to continue to build on their foundational skills and combine them with YBEC’s key pillars of Courage, Trust, and Effort to endure and overcome incredible challenges, all while experiencing a trip of a lifetime!

Thank you Nelson Rocks Outdoor Adventures, Nrocks, for another incredible experience climbing your Via Ferrata!

Mock Trial at Plainfield!
Students recently part took in a first of its kind mock trial at Plainfield. Court is a complex system and can be difficult to navigate in a healthy manner. Both sides of the room buzzed with excitement and nervousness as witnesses took the stand, evidence was presented, and a ruling was made - eventually.

Thank you Cumberland County Judge Michelle Sibert and local stenographer Tracy Lloyd for coming in and making the day for our students!

Teaching through progressions forms the cornerstone of YBEC's adventure programming. Students first dedicate two to three weeks to classroom sessions, where they delve into the fundamental mechanics of mountain biking. Subsequently, they transition to hands-on learning by participating in basic riding drills under the guidance of our experienced adventure instructors. The Salida mountain bike trails offer a distinctive and exhilarating backdrop, nestled at the base of the Rocky Mountains.

BREAKING : For the first time in YBEC history the Fishing Creek Girls Program walks away with the Dorm Inspection Trophy for the second year in a row.

Dorm inspections have become an integral part of the New Hampshire Trip, and the award holds high prestige among students and staff alike. Beyond the pride that comes with this award, this engaging challenge sets a precedent for our classrooms in Pennsylvania. An organized space is crucial in daily life at YBEC, especially for the high end adventure trips we pursue.

Congratulations Yellow Breeches Girls Program the attention to detail you all have is astounding. Great work and keep it up!

The formal dinner was the perfect way to wrap up our Level III New Hampshire Snow Sports trip this year. Students dressed to the nines and did NOT disappoint! We ate a great meal prepared by the phenomenal and kind staff at our lodge Purity Spring Resort and got to sign autographs on the fresh Attitash Ski Resort posters.

Thank you to all of our amazing students and staff for making this an amazing trip regardless of spring conditions! All together, we had more than 50 current YBEC'ers, and even had an alumni make a guest appearance. Way to go everyone who earned their place on this trip, keep shredding y'all!

Ski and Snowboarding lessons are all done and next week we travel to New Hampshire for our annual ski and snowboarding trip!

Thank you staff for the lessons and support through this learning process. We would especially like to thank the snow making team for the in depth behind the scenes tour of their snow making process! (Yes even though it is made with machines, it IS still real. And NO, you cannot eat it.)

Can't wait to shred up north!

In the second installment of our ongoing film series, students from the vastly rural environment of Central Pennsylvania venture into the extreme urban environment of New York City, embarking on an eye-opening cultural adventure. As they navigate the bustling streets of the concrete jungle, they encounter diverse cultures, languages, and lifestyles, gaining valuable insights into city living.

The educational richness of NYC adds depth to their experience, with opportunities to visit iconic landmarks, museums, and historical sites, enriching their understanding of art, history, and society.

Horseback Riding in Estes Park: YBEC's Colorado journey began with an exhilarating horseback riding adventure. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Longs Peak, our students and teachers, guided by skilled wranglers at Elkhorn Stables, enjoyed a captivating experience along the peak foliage of aspen trees.

YBEC's students and teachers formed connections with these amazingly empathic animals, which fostered trust and compassion. This was the first time in the saddle for a few, while others have been riding for years.

This horseback riding experience prepared YBEC's participants for the physical and mental challenges that awaited them throughout the rest of the trip.

Things we have discovered: Hot Cheetos smashed into a hamburger is way too good.

Shrinky-D***s: sometimes they work and the other 92% of the time they blow away into the cavities of your oven never to be seen again.

Plainfield Middle School made cell-shaped Shrinky D***s and they turned out great…for the most part.

(Disclaimer: there is no plastic in the YBEC ovens, we checked)

This week we want to shine the spotlight on Val from Fishing Creek! Val has been adjusting to the busy YBEC schedule this semester, and might we just say they have been CRUSHING IT! Even as early as their tour of Fishing Creek, Ashley “A” Megna, Program Coordinator, could tell Val would have a place in the program. “Val is imaginative, helpful, motivated, and willing to take on new challenges as they come,” Megna said.

Val’s favorite activity at YBEC is cooking, specifically cutting up the veggies. Cooking is a pivotal activity in YBEC programming for many reasons. Cooking during class teaches students to be more independent and self-accountable while connecting their hands to their brains.

Val is notably attentive to the people around them. With a quiet demeanor, they tend to check on their peers and teachers when they are stressed, according to Megna. “Val is also SUPER intuitive and always tells me when I look overwhelmed or stressed out … meaning it’s time for me to grab an energy drink out of the fridge and get it together,” Megna said.

Thank you Val for being so amazing this fall, keep up the good work at Fishing Creek going into the new year!

Stay up to date with YBEC programming, students, and staff by following us on Facebook and Instagram!

Student spotlight this week goes to Jani!

Jani recently returned from the Big Apple where he and the other guys from Fishing Creek got to explore the Brooklyn Bridge, Intrepid Museum and see “Back to the Future” on Broadway!

Jani has a big personality which goes great with his big heart. Coupled with his love of performing for those around him, usually in the form of a new dance he learned, it seemed fitting that he would end up dancing in front a crowd on Times Square.

Ty Marshall, a teacher at Fishing Creek who has gotten to know Jani well, encourages this self expression when the time is right. “Something that Jani has been working on since he has been here is learning how to channel his origionality, his creativity, and his enthusiasm. It was really cool to see him this trip because he was able to hold it in when we were in situations where you can’t do that, but then in situations that you can do that, like Times Square, … it was really cool to see him be fully himself but also be fully appropriate to everyone around him.”

Give it up for Jani and everyone else who just returned from NYC - more stories from the trip to come!

We have just one more week until winter break so keep up the hard work everyone!
