Hearing Aid Lab Makeover
Yesterday I visited a clinic that needed some storage and organization solutions. There has not been a provider there in a little while so we are getting it ready to see patients again We mounted storage drawers and found some existing organizers and set this clinic up for success. The pic where you can't see the floor was after we pulled everything off the bench. We threw a lot of stuff away and started fresh. I also took another couple of hours to completely redo the provider's computer station and set up dual monitors and relocated the real ear system. It was so satisfying. Always remember to take before and afters to reflect on your hard work!

I made delicious Persimmon Cookies for the patients this week. Nothing like the taste of home around the holidays. Make sure you are practicing good communication strategies around loved ones with hearing loss:
1. Get their attention first
2. Face them while speaking
3. Don't cover your mouth or eat while talking
4. Make sure there is good lighting
5 Speak clearly and concisely
6. If asked for repetition ("what?") repeat once and then change your words after this for possible better hearing range
7. Check-in with loved ones so they don't fall behind in conversation: "Mom, did you hear that? AJ is getting his white belt next week!"

Every now and then we get a call. Sometimes it's twice in one day. Today was one of those days. You just have to remind yourself that life is fleeting and you have to make every patient appointment the best appointment because you never know if it will be the last appointment you have with them.

I attended the 2023 Clinical Workshop for HearingLife this past week in Los Angeles, CA. There were about 70 from around the West who gathered to earn continuing education units and learn about best practices. We had senior leadership come learn alongside us (Steve Strong and Allison Zak), which shows this company is really committed to and invested in our professional growth. Big thank you to Dr. Ryan Potter and Dr. Leslie Peterson Soiles and for in-depth discussions and teachings on the practice of Real Ear and to the guest lecturers from and for educating us on the software/testing and systems available to us. The discussions in-person amongst our peers were my favorite part, a no judgement zone to ask questions and share our experiences. Human Resources also came to educate about different programs available to us and talk about the importance of mental health breaks during work days (hence the cool cartoon art). I am so lucky to be a part of this amazing company and All The Right Things that help benefit our patients. Because at the end of the day, we do it for them.

It is always such a pleasure to visit our local senior living community. Zeus, the resident dog, came to say hi and made our whole morning. The residents are so welcoming and appreciative. They always think of a friend to bring a mini Krispy Kreme to if they can't enjoy one themselves. Yesterday we made two new patients and cleaned and checked over 30 hearing aids in 2 hours, improving sound access and communication for so many wonderful humans.

During our Bimonthly visit to a local senior center, I did a screening on this very nice patron. They came out of the restroom wiping their face with a paper towel and asked if they could have a screening. I took them back and did my thing.

During the session, the patient made a few interesting comments. They said in almost a very longing sort of way, how much they cherish the sound of silence and how nice it is to experience this.

Usually, we hear this from Tinnitus patients with hearing loss who suffer from constant ear ringing. To my surprise, their screening was passing for every screening frequency binaurally.

After delivering passing results, this person made a couple more interesting comments like how well they can hear the freeway but also how wonderful it is to hear the rain well too.

I then realized this was a person who is experiencing a lack of housing. It made me so thankful to have the option of silence when I come home. I felt so lucky to deliver positive results for this lovely patron today.

Cramming for a very special day this week! Never thought my acting classes would come in handy. But really, the content is nothing new. More to come!

Staying in touch with patients is critical. I write at least 5 handwritten letters a week to patients who have not been in for more than 6 months. Sometimes, life just gets in the way and sometimes, they may be a memory patient. I try to also include a piece of education or hearing related article to inspire them to obtain ongoing care. Hearing aids should be cleaned and checked once a quarter and tuned at least once a year with a hearing test for best practice. So get out your stationery and change someone's life today!
