Members of the Carrollton Fire Dept. Along with Haralson County Fire, and Bremen Fire completed an 80 hour Hazardous Materials Technician course on Friday. 17 students completed the course work and related skills over a two week period and now will become members with the skills and ability to help support the mission of the West Georgia Regional Hazmat Team in its response throughout the West Georgia area and the State. The team was established in the early 90’s and is composed of members of the surrounding Departments with the Hazmat Response Unit being housed at Carrollton Fire Station 21.
The course is designed to teach students the ability to identify and safely respond to the release of hazardous materials/WMD’s with special attention in the use of Personal Protective equipment, Decontamination of Responders and the public, and ultimately protect the public and environment by stopping or reducing spills and leaks through the use of specialized equipment and tools.
Congratulations to the students completing the course.

Also last month each shift participated in scenario burns at our Training Center. Each crew had the opportunity to rotate between fire attack, water supply, search, and RIT assignments on five different scenarios with each scenario having a different element from the previous one. This required the Incident Commander to make on the fly decisions based on the presented scenarios. Some of the burns we’ve had in a while.

Behind on posting pictures again. Last month we conducted drills at our training center focused on forcible entry. Each Firefighter got an opportunity to work on forcing entry on in swinging and out swinging doors, utilizing the oxygen-acetylene torch, cutting rebar using a demo saw, and cutting with the “ziz” wheel rotary cutting tool. Thanks to all who helped make this happen.

Tuesday night the Carrollton Fire Department held it's annual Christmas Party. We were honored to have Mayor Cason and several members of the City Council attend, as well as, City Manger Brooks. We estimated that over 200 Firefighters and their families were able to attend the event. A wonderful meal was prepared by Smoking Pig of Bowden, Georgia, Santa made a visit, and we had a great evening of fellowship. We would also like to thank Firefighter Patrick Darby who helped coordinate the evening. Merry Christmas to each and ever person who attended and to our extended family, the Citizens of Carrollton Georgia.

We were also fortunate that we could display our skills to the Carrollton High School Public Safety class, and the City of Carrollton Employee Leadership Academy.

We spent the morning training on new air bags and struts that will be placed in service within the next few months. This equipment will be placed on our new aerial when it arrives and will help us to provide critical lifting and stabilizing cababilities during vehicle and equipment accidents.

Today we had the honor of presenting Haddie Bailey of Ms. Widener’s 3rd grade class at Central Elementary with her $100 prize for her entry into the Fire Safety Week Poster contest. Haddie had a great drawing and explanation of why it is very important to sleep with your bedroom doors closed. Thanks for your hard work!

Due to high winds, lack of rainfall, and low relative humidity it is recommended that you not burn for the next day or two. Thanks for your cooperation.

Today was the end of Week 1. Recruits began the morning with Physical Training and circuit training (stair climbs, dummy drags, hose drags) followed by a “doll house” demonstration which helped to reinforce the topics discussed during the Fire Dynamics lecture. The final event of the day allowed recruits the opportunity to participate in a “settee” where the Instructors and students spent time in the burn building once again reinforcing the different aspects of fire behavior in a controlled environment. Thanks to all the instructors who helped out today.

On day 2 of Recruit School, students spent the day becoming familiar with their Personal Protective Equipment (Turn out gear & SCBA) through numerous drills including “quick dress”, stair climbs, and air consumption drills. This video shows students attempting to breath the entire contents of their SCBA cylinder while remaining calm, and eventually practicing emergency procedures when they ran out of air. When calm and not exerting themselves several of the students were able to breathe for nearly 1 hour and 30 minutes. Pretty good, considering most had not worn an SCBA before today. The music playing was used by the Instructors as “psychological warfare”. ( no one liked the choice of music)
