Town of Carthage - Government
All roads lead to Carthage
The seat of Moore County
| Est. 1796 | Carthage, the county seat for Moore County, was incorporated in 1796.
The name was changed to Fagansville in 1806 in honor of Richardson Fagin for letting the county seat be moved from his house to another tract of land he donated to the county. The name was changed back to Carthage in 1818. The exact reason is unknown, but we've been called Carthage ever since.
JOIN US FOR A BUGGY TOWN CHRISTMAS!
Come on out for a day full of shopping, fun, and food!
An amazing group of Carthage Citizens and Downtown Business owners are hosting a huge extravaganza of holiday treats that include a tour of historic homes, food trucks, local businesses AND craft vendors! This festive event will culminate with the Annual Carthage Christmas Parade!
The Town of Carthage is seeking the public's input on how to plan for the future of Downtown. Town Planner, Jennifer Hunt, along with consultants Kimley-Horn and Koontz Jones Design, are leading efforts to study and design a long-term plan for revitalizing the heart of Carthage while making it easier to access for drivers and pedestrians.
There are two surveys now available at our website (www.townofcarthage.org) and because Carthage also serves as the Moore County seat, the surveys are available to anyone who works within, visits or uses downtown Carthage in any way.
We hope that you will share your thoughts with us through these surveys and join us for future public meetings when your schedule allows. Each survey received will help ensure the Town of Carthage grows and changes in a way that is beneficial to all people who live, work and play in downtown.

Due to minor construction and renovation of the Town Hall which happens to coincide with the Thanksgiving Holiday, the Town Hall Administrative Department will be closed the week of Thanksgiving, Monday, November 20 - Friday, November 24, 2023. The Town Hall will reopen on Monday, November 27 at 8:00 am. We apologize for the inconvenience.
Good morning Carthage.
In the early morning hours today, a water main running along Highway 15 501 suffered a break that led to little or no water pressure in our higher elevation areas of town. The Carthage Public Works Department was able to isolate the break quickly to prevent significant loss of water in the system.
Customers who experienced loss of water pressure this morning should now have water pressure restored. There is no indication that a Boil Water Advisory is needed. Thank you for your patience during this brief outage as we worked to restore service.
If you are still experiencing water pressure issues as a result of this brief outage please call the Carthage Public Works After Hours number at (910) 783-5723. Thank you!
The large playset is ready for fun at Nancy Kiser Park!
The small playset, swing set and ride-on toys will be ready by the end of next week after we spread a bed of mulch around them to cushion any falls.
Don't miss this opportunity to tell us what you think! This drop-in style meeting will give you the chance to meet with our downtown revitalization and parking planning team, view helpful maps and show us exactly where you think we need to improve. Hope to see you there!
The Town of Carthage Administration Department will be closed on Thursday, November 16th for Professional Development. Town Hall will reopen on Friday, November 17th at 8:00 am.
