There are so many people who help parents navigate their feeding journeys.

It can be really hard to figure out who you should go to for different issues. This list doesn't go over every single lactation supporter. There are wonderful volunteer organizations, and different programs offering various training opportunities. These are just some of the most common you'll see. Understanding who is qualified to handle what is really important because unfortunately not all professionals will be honest about that.

ANYONE can call themselves a lactation consultant. Only an IBCLC is a board certified, recognized medical professional. You can always check the IBLCE registry if you're not sure if someone is a "lactation consultant" or a real IBCLC.

Another thing to know is that our board exam is considered entry level to the field. Our knowledge is NOT supposed to stop when the exam ends. That's there the top of the pyramid comes in. While some IBCLCs are content to help with latching and milk supply, our Clinical Competency Requirements actually go far beyond that. Some IBCLCs invest in clinical skills to fully embrace our Scope of Practice and give parents the resources they deserve. The results they experience amaze us every day and we're so grateful for the brilliant and knowledgeable people we've learned from.

All levels of lactation support are valuable and help parents around the world meet their goals. If you're experiencing anything that is more clinically complex, you'll need to travel up the pyramid and find an IBCLC. If you need help finding someone highly skilled in your area, please reach out!

I am SO excited to announce this news. Please give the warmest welcome to my new mentee Arielle!!

Arielle will be joining me along during consults to learn and grow, and expand the amazing care offered at Every Drop Lactation Services.

Hi I’m Arielle, a Seattle native but currently residing in the Raleigh area. I hold a Bachelor Degree in Biology pre-med and I am currently a certified breast feeding specialist.

I took an interest in lactation consulting around age 7, after witnessing my neighbor breastfeeding her newborn. Instantly intrigued and in awe, my 7 year old mind thought how amazing the human body is, we make food!
That single encounter, brought me here. My interest never wavered it only grew. I’m so excited to learn from Brenna at Every Drop Lactation to help me get closer to my goals of becoming a lactation consultant. I look forward to working with you on your lactation journey!

To have the supplies we need for our next event on December 2, we need to raise $300. To apply for a grant on January 13, we need ten new donations in any amount. After talking with the LGBTQ+ Human Milk Feeding Committee, we were asked to share the following email. This is the last donation post that will do in November. We understand everyone’s inbox gets overrun with Giving Tuesday requests, let alone the Holiday Hustle.
Thank you,
The Breastfeed Durham Team

Hello!

I am a volunteer with Breastfeed Durham, a monthly sustainer, and the head of the LGBTQ+ Human Milk Feeding Committee.

Over the past few years, we have made tremendous progress towards consolidating local and national resources for all the varied ways EVERY FAMILY can get human milk for their babies and support for their families.

This year we have worked with a local artist to create diverse and inclusive human milk feeding icons that demonstrate just how broad culturally, racially, and identity-wise the lactating & human milk world really is.

We have designed some of the first broadly-inclusive human milk merchandise that celebrates the full spectrum of human milk feeding.

Representation and visibility are MAJOR steps toward ensuring equal access to support.

But we need your help!

In order to give away these products at the many community events on our calendar, we need $500 in total donations for merchandise.

Donate

Impact of Giving:

$1 - adds to our total number of donations and helps with grant proposals
$10 - 2 baby-sized shirts
$25 - 3 adult t-shirts
$50 - 10 full-color tote bags
$100 - the full printing cost of 50 magnets

Please consider donating as little as one dollar to Breastfeed Durham today and help spread the word that Human Milk is the Best Milk!

A traumatic birth can affect anyone involved. All should seek help healing from experiencing or witnessing a traumatic birth. Repost from

Repost • recently published a piece titled: Suffering in Silence: The Dads Dealing with Birth Trauma written by Laura Potter

“Every year thousands of men suffer PTSD from witnessing traumatic births, while, in the postpartum period, fathers are almost twenty-one times more likely to present a su***de risk. Safety nets that should be in place to protect these men aren’t there, and they’re left to deal with a major health issue by themselves.

The article reminds us: “One in 10 men experience symptoms of anxiety and depression in the first six months after the birth of a baby, and the number of men who become depressed in the first year after becoming a dad is double that of the general population.”

Some insurance companies only cover so many visits, and online classes and feeding support fall under those visits. With so many companies now offering classes online, or lactation support online, find out if they’re charging your insurance company

Prenatal classes are great to get a head start. A prenatal one on one visit can also help with education individualized for you.

Hey Triangle✨

It is !

We are amplifying and sharing how is full of joy, but also recognizing and sharing the barriers that exist for Black folks who breastfeed.

We are raising awareness about the systemic barriers, the history of wet nursing, implicit bias from healthcare providers, and lack of diversity among Lactation Professionals, and lack of access to education and lactation support.

Why is this week so important❓

🤱🏿 There are unique cultural barriers for Black women to breastfeed

🤱🏿 Black women are 9x more likely to be offered formula at hospitals than white women

🤱🏿 Due to a number of factors, Black women initiate and sustain breastfeeding for shorter durations than other groups of women

🤱🏿 Black babies die at TWICE the rate of white babies

At EBB we are fighting to champion better paid leave policies, and to eliminate financial barriers to accessing lactation support, education, and other needs such as breast pumps etc.

Tell us in the comments what means to you! 👇👇👇

For when you’re a little extra blessed and need more hands

Repost from

Breastfeeding when you’re blessed with big breasts can be challenging.

Here’s a little trick that may make life easier...

Use a stretchy crepe bandage as a sling to lift and support your breast to leave your hands more free to hold your baby, or shape your breasts.

The ‘boob hammock’ can be worn inconspicuously under your clothes between feeds meaning it’s one less thing to have to think about!

Let me know if you try it.

There may be days and nights when it feels like it’s too hard and you can’t keep going. You may need to take it one day at a time, or even one feeding at a time. Do what you need to do to take care of yourself, and feeding your baby.

If you’re at this point with feedings, reach out. There is help and good support here.

Love this visual! People are usually surprised when I tell them NOT to put the ni**le straight in their baby’s mouth. Point it up! Repost from .infantfeedingsupport

So look, ideally we want to stay as hands off the breast as possible to allow the baby to do their thing. But sometimes, some breast shaping and angling can really help.

The two issues people often find they need this for is if the baby won't tip their head back, or won't open wide. I'd suggest trying some skin to skin laid back feeding first for this issue, and always make sure there's nothing on the back of their head and the ni**le starts really high up their face so that they reach up wider. Get some support with latching if you're struggling x

❌ Removing milk from your breast doesn't get rid of the alcohol, your liver does that.

SO no matter how often you remove milk from your breast, it will still contain alcohol until your liver has removed the alcohol from your blood stream

Everyone’s size and metabolism differs but if you've had 1-2 drinks, you can safely feed your baby your milk.

⏰ Alcohol in your milk will peak about an hour after drinking so you can use that timeline to plan your drink if you want

Alcohol can reduce how much milk your baby is able to drink by interfering with your letdown

If you are not sober, you should have someone else care for your baby - it’s more about parenting at that point

But a glass of 🍷 wine or a cocktail 🍹 or a beer 🍺 with family is no reason to pump and dump

So enjoy!

💧Remember to also drink water and preferably enjoy your drink with a nutrient dense meal (hopefully one you didn't have to cook yourself!)

Telling a new parent to never fall asleep with their baby is like teaching abstinence only s*x Ed. Providing information about sleep options allows informed decision making and increases safety.

Repost from

Mamas sleeping with their babies is a normal and shared biological instinct that has been around for hundreds of years. It’s time new parents are offered accurate information on safe and responsible bed sharing so they can confidently make informed decisions. 💟

Your regular reminder ♥️

It is really common to tell someone finding breastfeeding challenging that if it is anything other than 100% easy & enjoyable they should just stop.

Some people can't seem to get their heads around the idea that breastfeeding can sometimes be challenging or tiring yet we still want to carry on doing it. There is so much wrong with this:

1. It ignores the fact that they may just want to talk about things being tough. It belittles how they feel & denies them support they may need.

2. It suggests that the alternative of bottle feeding will always be simple and easy when that just isn't true. Babies in general take up a lot of time and care however you feed or look after them.

3. It suggests that breastfeeding is only worth it if it is easy. As if there is no other reason anyone would want to do it other than convenience.

4. It suggests that anything challenging isn't worth doing. As if everything else in life that we want to do is really simple and lovely all the time. Can anyone think of anything else in life worth doing that no one ever complains about or finds tough sometimes?

Can you imagine if we applied this to other situations? So a friend complains they're shattered from trying to finish a qualification ('give it up!) or that they're finding getting fit difficult ('just sit on the sofa!) or that they're fed up of their partner leaving dirty dishes in the sink ('here's details of my divorce lawyer').

If someone says 'I really want to stop breastfeeding I've had enough now' then we should absolutely support them in doing this.

But if they say 'He's having a huge growth spurt right now. I'm so tired' then suitable responses include 'you're doing an amazing job', 'let me cook you dinner', ‘here have some chocolate'. Of course if they are having a specific difficulty you may also want to give details of someone who can help.

We often aren't very good with dealing with difficult emotions. We want to fix things for people we love. We hate thinking that they are going through something challenging. But not listening to what they are saying can make things feel worse.

I’m not here to make decisions for you. I’m here to give information so you can be confident in your decisions. And then I support whatever that decision is.

There’s enough people telling you what you need to do, and what you and your baby are “supposed to” do.

Yes! Side car cribs can make night time feedings so much more manageable!!

Repost from

The magic of side-car’ing a crib legit changed our world. 😆

Here’s a round-up of how I do it…

1. Take one side off the crib.
2. Position the crib next to the bed (as close as possible.)
3. Secure the two frames together. I use a couple of bike rack straps!
4. Raise the crib mattress to the same height as the big bed’s mattress. I use folded blankets underneath the crib mattress.
5. Push the crib mattress over so that there is no gap between it and the bed’s mattress.
6. Fill the gap at the other side of the crib mattress (where the bars are) with a pool noodle (wrapped in a sheet) or a tightly rolled bath towel. Nothing soft or squishy here!
7. Enjoy the benefits of cosleeping with a little extra space!

Another reason I love this set-up is that it sets the crib up as a really familiar and positive sleep space, which helps future transitions become that much easier.

Have you side-car’d your crib? Has it changed your world too?!

With love,
Louise 💓
