Freedom to Lead International

Seventy percent of the world’s people – more than four billion of us – are story-centric learners. (UNESCO and International Mission Board).

Freedom to Lead is about cultivating competent Christ-centered leaders through story, symbol, and song, to unleash their potential for impacting local communities with the whole Gospel. A small percentage of these are non-literate. They have to rely on the spoken word because they cannot use print. They may listen to the radio or watch television, but they are going to need the Good News through s

FTL Prayer Request of the Week
Please pray as we enter a new year...

"In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps." Proverbs 16:9

As we enter into a new year, please pray that the Lord will direct our steps. Pray that He will give us wisdom as we embrace all that He has for us this coming year. Please pray that God will continue to enter into the story of each of the men and women that we work with. Pray that the Lord will transform their lives and leadership - and ours - as we all consider what it means to be competent Christ-centered leaders.

Congratulations to the graduates of Lifeway Mission International who just completed four years of The Garden Project!

Last month we began a brand new cohort in Hosaenna, Ethiopia. Forty leaders from 17 surrounding churches gathered for the first module on Leadership for a Healthy Church. Many of them are committing to growing as Master Facilitators someday!

We also graduated a group from Jimma, Ethiopia. They have completed all eight modules of The Garden Project over the past several years, even in the midst of a global pandemic.

After transferring The Garden Project to 40 pastors in his region, a pastor from Zimbabwe reported, “From the feedback I received from all the pastors and leaders it was truly a valuable lesson. It brought a different perspective to their way of leading the church and their way of participating to what the Holy Spirit is doing in the life of the church in general.""

At Freedom to Lead we use stories story to develop competent Christ-centered leaders for healthier communities. Why?

80% of the world’s people belong to cultures that learn best through story, images, and music. They’re most likely influenced through oral rather than literate means. Yet, more than 90% of Christian workers use literacy-based communication. At Freedom to Lead, we are looking to bridge this gap.

The first step to building true disciples and faithful leaders is to teach them in a way that deeply, personally connects with them… as Jesus taught. His example remains the cornerstone.

Thus, we developed a leadership curriculum, The Garden Project. Unlike conventional classroom methods, The Garden Project uses proven tools that emphasizes personal discipleship relationships and Word-centric stories, parables, songs, drama, and music. All are faithful to Scripture; all are memorable; all are easily transferable.

Ahmed*, a ministry leader from North Africa, was once trained to kidnap, torture, and execute Christians. But God wonderfully transformed him. By God’s grace, Ahmed is now leading a large network of Muslim Background Believers (MBBs) who are reaching thousands of other Muslims for Christ. While experiencing the module this week on Leadership for a Healthy Ministry, Ahmed said, “MBBs have been converted, baptized, discipled, and educated in the Bible, but it is now time for us to LEAD the church into the next generation.”

With your support, we can continue to train and equip leaders like Ahmed: https://freedomtolead.net/donate/

Last month we had a phenomenal week in Istanbul, Turkey, with 25 Christian leaders from all parts of North Africa and the Middle East. The launch of our North Africa and Middle East initiative has been delayed for the past two years due to Covid. We just had to keep reminding ourselves that God is in control.

This area of the world has a great need of building strong churches that can respond to the many people coming to Christ in recent years. Strong churches require effective leaders. Through your support and prayers, Freedom to Lead will have the capacity to respond to the critical need of strengthening and developing Christ-centered leaders in this area of the world where the church is quickly growing.

Do you or someone you know have a heart for global missions?

Freedom to Lead International provides leadership development for under-resourced ministry leaders. We currently serve grassroot leaders in South Asia and throughout the continent of Africa through our flagship program – The Garden Project. We have just launched in North Africa and the Middle East. This program cultivates Christ-centered leadership competencies through eight modules – each four days in length - over a period of four years. The Garden Project also provides intentional mentoring for program participants.

Why do we use a storycentric approach?

After 13 years, in 50 nations and 10,000 lives, we have found that an oral, storycentric approach is more fruitful than academic teaching and “throwing books” at people. The beauty is that leaders can learn Christ-centered leadership regardless of their level of literacy. People learn best when the material touches their minds, their hearts, and their personal experience. They remember it, they share it. They unleash the full potential of the gospel in their communities.

Over the past several weeks, we have seen lockdowns being lifted and FTL South Asia teams come together IN PERSON for the first time in two years! The region is exploding with great opportunities of expansion. This brings great encouragement to all of us. "The Garden Project Family" (a large multigenerational group with people coming in from almost every state in India and from surrounding countries) still continues to meet once a month on Zoom because they have seen how valuable these times are to the church.

We will steward your contribution in one of three ways:

One of the hallmarks of the FTL program is that the material is transferable and we encourage our participants to pass it on to a new generation of leaders in their local areas. We have also worked to identify a few people from each cohort to go through Facilitator Training, a deeper level training that hopes to develop what we call "Master Facilitators." For example, one Facilitator Training event in Fall 2021 brought in leaders from 6 surrounding countries in West Africa. Since then, these "Master Facilitators" have hit the ground running as they have taken The Garden Project into the interior areas of their regions.
