Junior: Applications Open

S*x: Male
Age: 8 months old (as of August 2024)
Coat: Black and white, rough coat
Weight: 50 lbs
Activity Level: Active Pet
Looking for a big beautiful pup who will steal your heart with just one look? CBCR is introducing Junior! He was born on December 1st, 2023 and although he has grown into his 50-lb adult body he is still a puppy through and through.

Junior is neutered, house-trained and up to date on basic veterinary care. His DNA was tested and although his former owners were positive that they had purebred Border Collie pups on their hands, they were mistaken. Junior is a blend of Border Collie, Spaniel and Retriever. That is one sweet mix, if you asked me. Junior loves to get into water, a creek, a kiddie pool, even a water dish can be refreshing and fun. Lucky for his humans, he also enjoys being rubbed down with a towel.

He is great with other dogs, has not been tested with cats. Although he does not exhibit much prey drive, he would love to catch a butterfly, a toad or perhaps that pesky rabbit, who seems to ignore him from the other side of the fence. He is sleepy in the morning but as the day wears on his energy winds up. He is not a couch potato and would be happiest with another energetic young dog to play “catch-me, catch-me”.

Junior will bark at a stranger (or a hooty-owl) and I found out recently that a car ride, after a meal, ends up in disaster. Hopefully he will be able to tolerate car-rides and warm up to strangers as he matures.

Like any pup of his age, Junior is going through a chewing phase. Chewing on inappropriate objects can easily be redirected to his own chew toys. Digging or any unwanted behavior can also be redirected to fun play time. In other words, his human has to pay attention and give him fun things to do.

Junior is being fostered in Chatham County, NC, just a little south of Pittsboro. If you are looking for a fun-loving active companion to join your family and would like more information about Junior, contact his foster person at [email protected].

Every day, our dedicated team at Carolina Border Collie Rescue works tirelessly to rescue, care for, and rehome dogs in need. But we can't do it alone! We need your support to keep our mission going strong.

How do donations help?
This week we rescued two dogs. One is heartworm positive so her care will take at least until January and donations help with providing her heartworm treatment.
We also took in a pup who is anemic and who had a terrible infection in her toe. Luckily, she is not septic. She was started on antibiotics and will be given a couple of weeks to see if she can fight off the infection. Even so, she will more than likely need amputation. Your donations will help with her treatment and recovery.

How can you help?

Together, we can give these dogs the happy endings they deserve. Thank you for your kindness and generosity! 🐾💕

Sunday Adoption Success Story! Newton!
"I am the lucky owner of Newton who was adopted from CBCR in 2018 as an 8 month old BC mix. He is named after the town where his foster parents live and he is my constant companion.
From the beginning he was energetic, anxious in new situations and eager to learn. I must admit that a few times after the adoption, I thought Newton was a little demon because he was so energetic but nope just a pup. Like most dogs in the Border Collie breed, he is quite smart and quickly learned commands which eased both our adjustments.
Whether jumping for flying balls, finding hidden scent trays in exchange for treats, barking at buoys or watching birds at the feeder, Newton finds joy in every day. However, his favorite activity is to explore the marsh at Edisto Island as he returns to the house covered in gooey pluff mud. Next up, the dreaded bath!
Newton is my 2nd BC rescue and I can’t imagine having another dog breed as my ‘best bud.’

COURTESY LISTING: Oslo

Oslo is located in Charleston, SC. You may reach out to his owner, Zach, for inquiries/questions @703-403-2066 or email at [email protected]

S*x Male
Age 7
Weight (in pounds): 60
Coat (Color and Length): Black/White, medium/short
Dog's Activity level :Working
House Trained
Spayed/Neutered
Current on Vaccinations
Gets along with children? Unknown
Gets along with other dogs: Unknown
Gets along with cats: Not a Good Fit

Oslo is a 7 year old loving, energetic and intelligent pure bred Border Collie with a touch of anxiety. He is laser focused and relentless while fetching a ball during playtime, and craves human interaction and direction. As is common with Border Collies, Oslo exhibits some bad habits (jumping up on guests, barking, chasing our cat, etc) which could be rectified by an owner who is experienced with high energy working breeds and who has the space and capacity to give him the mental and physical stimulation he needs. Though he is 7, he picks up skills very quickly and has a very strong herding drive.
Oslo is fully housebroken and neutered, comes when he’s called, and responds to sit, lay down, and spin commands. Oslo is prone to a bit of anxiety. When he was younger there were several incidents of aggression where we were bit. This was likely due to our inexperience with the breed while initially training him, causing him to develop some defensiveness. Things turned around significantly when we were able to work with the combination of a reputable trainer and a Prozac prescription, and we have not had a single incident in the last 4-5 years. He is still defensive around his meals, but it’s all bark (mostly when he sees our cat near his food) and no bite; I am able to reach to take his food away with no issues. As with his previously mentioned bad habits, his aggression is nullified with the right environment and stimulation.
The right home for Oslo would have at least a good size yard for playing fetch or a property on which he can be trained to work, and caretakers with active lifestyles who are experienced with working breeds.
Interaction with other dogs:Though he’ll get protective when he and another dog are on leashes, Oslo is generally good with other dogs, for example in a neutral environment such as a doggy daycare. The only concern would be if another dog wants to “play fight”, or interfere with him while he is playing fetch. He gets frustrated by play nips from other dogs and in the past has shown some aggression to let another dog know when they don’t let up. He plays fetch with other dogs well too, except for when a dog tries to take the ball directly from his mouth, chase him, etc. He does not have any guarding issues if another dog gets the ball instead of him, or takes it from in front of him while he is waiting for it to be thrown. In short, he likes his personal bubble.
Interaction with children:Oslo’s herding drive does not translate to herding/nipping at children as I’ve heard is sometimes common with the breed. He has shown no signs of aggression with our toddler, however we watch closely to make sure kids don’t invade his personal bubble unsolicited. Oslo hasn’t shown aggression towards children, however he also doesn’t really acknowledge them either, which (as with many dogs) can lead to knocking over young children by accident by simply not noticing them. Oslo would likely be a fine fit for houses with children older than 3 or 4.
Interaction with cats:Oslo’s herding drive does translate to trying to herd cats, but it varies based on the cat’s temperament. We have two cats; one is confident and adventurous and who brushes off Oslo’s nagging, so he stops trying, the other cat is reserved and reactive to Oslo, thus he rarely gives a moment’s piece. Outdoor and/or independent cats may do just fine with Oslo, but chances are he would be better off in a home without cats

Reason for re-homing?
Unfortunately we do not have the living space or time to provide the mental and physical stimulation which Oslo requires. Furthermore, we have one young toddler and another baby on the way, so sadly our available time to dedicate to him will only decrease over the coming months and years. We also plan to change our living situation soon, and the chances that we will be permitted to have dogs in our new location is low. We love Oslo very much, but have come to terms with the fact that finding him an appropriate home and caretaker is in his best interest.

Adoption Success Sunday!
Let's hear from Romeo's adopter:
"As you can see Romeo is happy as always showing off his smile! Romeo has 2 little sisters who are littermate sisters Juliet and Porsche (also rescued from CBCR in 2020), and a big brother Bentley (rescued from ARCBCR in 2016). Romeo, named after my grandfather in law's favorite dog, lives up to his name and is very much the lover not the fighter. As the middle child Romeo is always looking for love and getting it! I found my first dog and border collie in college at the SPCA. Romeo is #4 of 6 rescued border collies I have been lucky enough to have had in our family over 41 years. I may be biased, but I highly recommend border collie rescues and appreciate all the hard work done to find these wonderful dogs great homes."

If you have adopted from CBCR and want to share your story, message or comment and our social media coordinator will reach out to you!

Biography
We adopted Jax in August 2022 as a 9 month old puppy from a rescue organization in New York City. We quickly found our small Brooklyn apartment was not suitable for this energetic pup and relocated to NC earlier this year. We spent a lot of time training him, acclimating him to other dogs and people with long walks and play sessions. Jax is fully potty trained, knows a few tricks, turns 3 in November, and finds great joy in protecting the homestead via barking. Jax is a great dog.. loyal, playful and lots of energy with some anxieties: cars, cats, people entering the home. While Jax has shown no signs of aggression, we found with our new baby and demands of our new work schedule, we don't have the means, energy or time to give Jax his best life. We are looking for a home that has ample outdoor space (Jax LOVES to run...especially chasing squirrels or other wildlife), and owners that are willing to work with him on his barking, recall and other needs.

Sage: ADOPTED

Introducing Sage. A gorgeous 2 year old who was found wandering about in the eastern part of North Carolina. That prompted picked up by animal control.. Consequently, we don't know what percent Border Collie is in her DNA, and we are assuming she is a Border Collie mix at that.

But, regardless of her lineage, we are so glad to have her in CBCR! Sage just completed treatment for heartworms; so over the past 5 months, her foster Mom has gotten to know her very well (and is in absolute love).

Sage is a very gentile, docile and loving little girl. She is friendly to people and dogs, however larger dogs that come charging up to her scare her. Toys do not interest her, but she loves running and playing with the other dogs in our household. She will play fetch for only a few throws, get bored and then off to explore which is her favorite activity..especially in woods and fields. And she does this all the while knowing exactly where her favorite person is at all times. She will always be in your vicinity, she has never run off even though she easily could. We taught her the boundaries and she has respected them. When it's too hot to explore, she will be hanging out on the back porch monitoring her "estate" for wildlife. Sage would not do well confined in the house while her people are away at work, she really needs free access to the outside.

Sage has been briefly exposed to children. She basically ignored them although she didn't mind one bit letting them pet her at whim through out the evening. Cats? I doubt it as she will go after wildlife.
She rides well in the car, does not resource guard her food, has a vocabulary of words she knows and is not a barker. She is OK with thunderstorms and fireworks with only a slight amount of uneasiness. Her foster Mom has never had a reason to crate her as she is not destructive and I think a crate would likely upset her. She will also walk on a leash without pulling.

Sage is looking for a special person whom she can adore and will return every ounce of love and affection. Guaranteed. She needs that person to allow her to be a dog, not confine her to 2 walks a day, to allow her to run outside and to be able to watch and monitor her surroundings to keep her mind and body active. She needs that even though she does not have the unrelenting drive and stamina of a pure Border Collie. No privacy fence please. A buddy her size to play and connect with would be ideal. Sage does well at noisy and well populated parties mingling in among the guests on her own. But I would prefer her to go to a quieter home.

And what would that fortunate person get in return? Our precious little girl will return your love unconditionally 10 fold, loyalty beyond expectation, she will regard you as a culinary expert no matter what you put in front of her, rid your place of groundhogs, very gently wake you up in the morning... and the list goes on. She will be that friend that you will never want to let go, ever. I suppose by now you figured out her foster Mom (me) adores her, It's difficult to think of any cons. I've resigned myself to ensuring she goes to a home exactly fit for her.

Sage comes spayed, heartworm negative, up to date with vaccinations, and microchipped.

If you think you may be that special person for Sage, please complete an application at www.CBCR.org Questions welcomed at [email protected]. Sage is located 40 miles west of Philadelphia.

Cricket: Applications Open for Adoption

UPDATE: Take a look at new videos added. Her foster is starting her in agility, and she already does disc work very well. They took her to obedience class where she also excelled, she really does not pay attention to other dogs much and is very focused in class, see the picture of her with the trainer.

Cricket is an 18-month-old bundle of loving energy. If you are looking for a fun dog to play any sport with, she is your girl! She is both food and toy motivated, wants to please and does not ever run out of energy. Her legs are spring loaded and will leap to any height to catch a frisbee or a ball. She absolutely loves water and is fearless on boats and floats. The sky is the limit for her sports potential, she could be a fantastic dock diving dog, she could play frisbee, flyball, agility or obedience with the right training. She has a lot of stamina and can hike with you for hours or go for a run on any given day. She can settle down after a good play session and is snoozing under my desk as I write this bio. She is good in a crate and voluntarily goes into a crate for a nap at times.

Cricket first came to CBCR as a little black and white puppy, but turned out not to be a Border Collie. The largest breed percentage in her DNA is German Shepherd (hence the ears!), followed by some other shepherd breeds, Staffordshire terrier and Pitbull terrier.

Cricket was adopted out to a great family but unfortunately animosities developed between her and the other dog in the household, another female, that could not be remedied and resulted in fights between the two dogs. Cricket was returned to CBCR and therefore now has to find a family without other pets. She could potentially be matched to a larger, good natured male dog who is not easily offended by Cricket who has little sense for other dog’s personal space or boundaries.

She gets along fine with the male dogs in her foster home. Cricket has met a myriad of dogs on walks and never displayed any aggression in that setting. She will need a fenced-in yard (no electric fencing) where she can chase her ball safely. Cricket loves human beings of any age. She is great with children however she is exuberant and would knock over a toddler in an instant, she would probably be better with slightly older kids who enjoy a
playmate. She will chase a ball all day long for you!

Cricket is located in Holly Springs, NC.
If you are interested or have questions about Cricket, please contact her foster Gabriela @ 215-292-8297 or email at [email protected]

Buddy: Applications Closed

S*x: Male
Age: 12 years old
Coat: Black and white
Weight: 47 lbs
Activity Level: Companion

Buddy was surrendered to a shelter near the NC coast during the pandemic. His advanced age and health status (a painful ear infection and half-bald from a long term flea allergy) made him virtually un-adoptable. But shelter staff had lost one of their own to Covid the day Buddy arrived, and something shifted in the hearts of those on duty. Buddy became Shelter Mascot. He spent days in the office and nights in the playroom, enjoyed pizza with the team for lunch, and accompanied officers on calls. 8 months of medical baths and ear treatments along with systemic and topical medication had Buddy’s ears almost healed and his coat restored, when a new Director revised policies. CBCR got a call saying a senior Border Collie needed rescue. Won over by his “old man cute puppy face” (as a vet tech described it) we set up a relay to get Buddy to Pittsboro, where he has been charming neighbors and family ever since.
Buddy is house-trained, excellent on leash (a 3 year old can walk him), good with other dogs, fine with cats, loves people of all ages, especially children, enjoys car rides, and tolerates thunder and fireworks. He has a slight limp from an old cruciate ligament injury but does well on pain meds. He is satisfied by a half-mile walk per day and, although he rests a lot, his preference would be to do that near young children at play or, second best, at the feet of his guardians. He was raised with children in his original family and seems to miss them, as well as, however odd this may sound, his ever-entertaining and nurturing llfe in the Animal Shelter.
If you can offer Buddy a relaxing yet entertaining life in with daily walks, time with children, and an occasional car ride, you’ll be rewarded by a loyal, affectionate companion. Fenced yard is a must.

Buddy is fostered in Pittsboro, NC. For more information, contact foster parent, Ellen Pearson, at [email protected].

If you have submitted an adoption application to CBCR within the last three years and you have not moved, please contact the foster parent before submitting another application. The foster parent will let you know if another application is required.

Meet the Rescuer:
My name is Joan and I have been a rescuer with CBCR for almost 2 years.
I adopted my first dog ever (Lexi) from CBCR (with boyfriend Mike) and that’s how we became associated with the organization. After Lexi passed, we adopted our current dog – Gordy – from CBCR.
I help with CBCR by communicating dogs needing rescue, helping with admin stuff, home evals, transport, etc....
I also hold several jobs. I oversee the Courtesy Listings, On-board new volunteers and am the
Secretary on the Board which carries a variety of tasks like admin work, veterinary checks or
helping other volunteers.
The role I enjoy most is on boarding the new volunteers and seeing them interact with the group, participating by taking on a job or fostering a rescue. It emphasizes to me that volunteering is a team effort.
When I’m not walking Gordy, I’m working full time at a financial institution and dabbling in some new hobbies.

Slushie: Adopted

Slushie is a 4 month old border collie mix. He was found as a stray with another puppy that was mostly likely his brother. He's a well adjusted friendly puppy. He is calm and mellow compared to many other puppies. I believe he will become a wonderful family dog. I do not think he will be super high energy like many border collies.

He is working on potty training but will most likely not be fully potty trained before adoption. Slushie does well sleeping in his crate. He is great with other dogs and respects their boundaries fairly well for a puppy. I suspect he was well socialized with people and other dogs early in his doggie life.

He is getting used to my cats, chickens and goats. He's made significant progress with my cats but still barks at my goats.

He loves toys, snuggles and the occasional fetch. Slushie will bring the ball back after fetching for a few minutes before getting distracted and running off to do puppy things.

Slushie is good with my toddler but like all puppies he jumps and is playfully nippy. His ideal home will need to have enough time to continue his training and understand puppies still need a lot of attention.

Slushie does have some mild thinning of hair on his ears but the vet explained it's likely from having fleas early in his life.

Slushie is in rescue with CBCR. You may fill out an application for adoption here:

If you have questions about Slushie, you may contact Kasi @ 828-838-2252 or email at [email protected]

Sunday Success Story!
"We adopted Muki (previously Gretchen) in Fall 2019 when she was approximately 1 year old. She soon made herself a racetrack in our backyard and would speed around it whenever she sensed someone on the other side of the fence. Once she decides a new person is not there to eat her, Muki is very sweet. She knows many tricks and is working on ‘clean up your toys’ and ‘walk on your hind legs."

Koji is a 4 year old neutered male. He is house trained, crate trained and knows basic commands. Koji is very smart, has great recall and is the perfect cuddle bug. Koji does well with other dogs and cats but I am unsure if a family with small children would be suitable as he is not a very calm dog. He can walk on a leash but has been in the country for some time now so may need retraining. It’s with a heavy heart that I am looking for a new family as he is a gem. Recently I have gone through a nasty divorce and the ex left me with Koji solely. I travel for work and it has been very hard on him. He absolutely does not do well with changes in his environment which has proven challenging and stressful on both him and myself. He is an anxious dog in general when his people leave and that is only amplified with monthly boarding. It takes him a very long time to calm back down into our routine. I feel it is best for Koji to have a family that does not do much traveling and will be around constantly. He needs a very consistent routine and structure. He will not be suitable for apartment living but a backyard would be sufficient, farm would definitely be ideal.I would require a home visit/meet and great prior to him moving to his new home. He has no medical issues that I am aware of. Please reach out if there are any questions or you’d like to set a time to meet.
Does the dog have any medical issues? No
Does the dog have any history of aggression such as growling, lunging, snapping or biting any adult or child? No

Reason for re-homing?
Koji is extremely anxious when his environment is changed and due to work obligations I must travel. This dynamic worked when I was married but now that I am divorced it has proven very hard on Koji. I do not want to medicate him for him to feel comfortable in his home so I feel a more consistent family would be best for him.
