Brandy(L) and Ann (R) work with PlaySafe USA
PlaySafe strives to support essential sports medicine services to our athletic youth and community by providing certified athletic trainers to secondary schools in our community. We believe that professional, comprehensive sports medicine services begin with a certified athletic trainer (ATC) and are critical to safe and healthy athletic participation.
Certified athletic trainers are sports-related injury prevention, assessment, and care experts. Simply put, the presence of a certified athletic trainer can save a life.
Vendor highlight: South Carolina Athletic Trainers Association
Our representative at the South Carolina Athletic Trainers Association Conference had an opportunity to meet several of the vendors.
Maggie works with Below 104, a non profit, that helps to educate and prevent injuries sustained from heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
When we think of how brain injuries are sustained, we rarely think about the heat. Heat stroke is defined as the most serious heat-related illness. It occurs when the body can no longer control its temperature: the body's temperature rises rapidly, the sweating mechanism fails, and the body is unable to cool down. When heat stroke occurs, the body temperature can rise to 106°F or higher within 10 to 15 minutes.
Heatstroke can lead to brain damage, organ failure or death.
If you suspect someone may be experiencing a heat stroke you should immerse them in cold water. - A bath of cold or ice water has been proved to be the most effective way of quickly lowering your core body temperature. The goal is to lower the body’s temperature below 104 degrees as quickly as possible.

WASHINGTON — June 14, 2024, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is including three new cancer types in the list of presumed service-connected disabilities due to military environmental exposure under the PACT Act. This announcement marks the continued commitment under the Biden-Harris administration’s Unity Agenda and the Biden Cancer Moonshot to support the nation’s Veterans.
Through a sub-regulatory policy letter published to the Federal Register, the following three cancer types have been included in the list of presumptive diseases:
🧿Male breast cancer
🧿Urethral cancer
🧿Cancer of the paraurethral glands
This policy establishes presumptions of service connection for eligible Gulf War and post-9/11 Veterans who deployed to Afghanistan, Somalia, Djibouti, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Uzbekistan, and the entire Southwest Asia theater of operations, which includes Iraq. Presumptive service connection means VA automatically assumes service connection for the disease and provides benefits to eligible Veterans who have submitted claims with evidence of a diagnosis.
